No full text
Background: The world population's full immunization with vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 is still challenging. Therefore, more research must be needed to find an active antiviral drug against the virus, including new mutated strains. Results: Therefore, this research analyzes 35 natural compounds isolated from various plants against SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro) using an in silico strategy. According to the results, it was possible to identify promising molecules using a molecular docking strategy. Furthermore, the results showed that the interaction of these molecules with protease-specific residues, including (2S)-Eriodictyol 7-O-(6''-O-galloyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (Trp207, Ser284, and Glu288), Hypericin (Glu166, Arg188, and Thr190), Calceolarioside B (Gly143, Ser144, Cys145, Glu166, Arg188, and Gln192), Epicatechin (Ser144, His163, and Leu167) and Myricitrin (Thr190) with ΔG was -8.5, -9.6, -8.5, -9.3 and -9.3 kcal/mol, respectively. In addition, analyzing all compounds for their ADME properties shows that compounds present an excellent pharmacokinetic profile. Conclusion: In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that these major natural compounds can be considered potential inhibitors of Mpro and should be further explored in vitro and in vivo in accordance with our data.</p

Diabetes and bacterial infection

No full text
People with diabetes are at increased risk of infection and are worried about biological agents such as bacteria. Particularly, foot infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and skin diseases are due to bacterial infections that make diabetic patients suffer from clinical difficulties. Although antibiotics, one of the bacterial therapies, have been used, the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria is now in demand for alternative therapies. Although, many studies reported that antibiotic-resistant for bacterial infections and their rate have increased significantly in the diabetic patient population. Still, there is no report that directly compares the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant infections in diabetes types. In this review, we described the diverse types of diabetes with their bacterial infection and the reported resistance. Generally, diabetic patients are susceptible to vancomycin-resistant enterococcal infections, extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing intestinal bacteria, carbapenem-resistant intestinal bacteria, and unfermented gram-negative bacilli. Thus, early detection of diabetes and prompt treatment are important to control chronic infections in diabetic patients.</p

Transcultural aspects in the treatment of posttraumatic and situational distress among middle eastern refugees

No full text
The increasing size of displaced populations seeking protection in third countries, should be considered in public health and especially in Psychotherapy in that countries. Refugees from the Middle East, usually from collective cultures, require special skills and modifications in the treatment setting. The cultural formulation (CF) of illness and suffering, as described in the recent version of medical standard manuals, is part of this challenge. Besides bridging cultures, the specific nature of trauma, especially highly complex issues such as a genocidal environment, - in our case example - the both transgenerational and the immediate persecution experienced by the Yazidi ethnic and religious minority - the therapist must also consider aspects of distress caused by displacement and exile. The article discusses the needed adaptations in the therapeutic setting, using the case of a Yezidi woman surviving ISIS violence abduction. Within the framework of our treatment, she received cognitive behavioral therapy with individual and group therapies (multimodal interventions) over a period of 10 weeks. Besides establishing stability, safety and orientation and strengthening her self-consciousness, her traumatic experiences were considered from an individual, collective, socio - cultural and political point of view. Both the causes and maintaining conditions of the symptoms as well as the symptoms themselves are being worked on. The sensitive confrontation with the trauma was particularly helpful for the patient. In addition, she learned to participate actively in everyday life and in new social contacts again during therapy. She was able to overcome the passive - avoidant lifestyle since the traumatic event in a somewhat stable manner, although she will still need time to develop a stable perspective in the long term. She was offered the prospect of renewed follow-up treatment if necessary.</p

Is there a relationship between COVID-19 and sarcoidosis? A case report

No full text
Mediastinal lymphadenopathy is rare in Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) patients with mild clinical course. The frequency of lymphadenopathy increases in COVID-19 patients who develop Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). In a 38-year-old male patient, mediastinal lymphadenopathy and asymptomatic pulmonary embolism were detected during the third week of COVID-19 infection at home. Sarcoidosis was diagnosed with a finding of non-caseating granulomas. Even if it is asymptomatic, pulmonary embolism should be considered, especially in COVID-19 patients with high C - Reactive Protein (CRP) and D-dimer levels. If mediastinal lymphadenopathy is detected in mild COVID-19 cases, systemic diseases should be investigated. In severe COVID-19 cases, if lymphadenopathy continues despite a COVID-19 recovery, further investigation is required.</p

Vital parameters in Spanish alpine skiers training at altitude and their relationship to human health

No full text
Background: Mediterranean lifestyle has consistently been shown to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Physical activity is beneficial to health, although it needs to be carefully studied in extreme conditions. Hypertension depends on sedentary lifestyles, stress, and bad habits such as excessive consumption of food and salt. Chronic sleep deprivation alone has been associated with cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. The patient must be educated.Aim: The main objective of this study was to evaluate parameters of non-invasive health such as blood pressure and heart rate in the federated population in winter sports in Andalusia (Spain) relating to body composition. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study. Sample of 234 subjects currently federated in the Andalusian Federation of Winter Sports (Spain). Ages between 12-30yrs (51.6% women, 48.4% men). Subjects carried out surveys with a physical examination, blood pressure measurements, electrocardiogram performance, and parameters to assess body composition. Results: None of the younger male subjects had hypotension or bradycardia (76.6% normotensive, 80.4% normal heart rate). None of the adults had hypotension or tachycardia (82.4% normotensive) and none of the women had bradycardia. Mean weight values (men and women) with a tendency to significance (p = 0.064). %Fat means of men was 19.18% (SD: 5.90) and 23.61% (SD: 8.91) for women. For systolic and diastolic tensions no differences were found by gender. There is no correlation between systolic and diastolic blood pressure with body composition or nutrient intake, however, there is a negative correlation between hours of sleep and blood pressure (p < 0.001).Conclusion: %fat can inform of the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Performing intense aerobic physical exercise can cause sinus bradycardia at rest. Sleeping and having a restful and deep sleep reduces the risk of suffering from high blood pressure. Assessing blood pressure and anthropometric measurements is important to estimate the general health of children, adolescents, and adults. This is the case with alpine skiing in the south of Spain where the athlete lives in these conditions. Future works related to this population living in high-altitude conditions should be studied to see the impact of altitude on the health and sporting performance of acclimatized people.</p

Studying the efficiency of carbon nano enterosorbents in the model of experimental renal failure

No full text
The current article examines the effectiveness of nanoenterosorbent to correct violations of the functional state of the kidneys in the experimental renal failure model. The obtained data open up opportunities for further research aimed at studying the possibility of using nanoenterosorbent in practical medicine as a new nanoenterosorbent and a means of drug delivery. The study was conducted in the following groups of animals: group 1 - control group; group 2 - an experimental model of acute renal failure; group 3 - nanoenterosorbent was administered intragastrically at a dose of 650 mg/kg per day to animals with acute renal failure. During the experiment for 3, 14 and 21 days, an analysis of biochemical parameters was obtained from each group. During the investigation, intragastric administration of the nanoenterosorbent did not reduce the dynamics of experimental uremia but reduced the concentration of level of molecular of average mass within 3 days, it also did not improve the functional state of the kidneys according to the readings of urea and creatinine for 14 days after the formation of renal failure, however, it statistically reduced endogenous intoxication according to EI data. Daily intragastric administration of nanoenterosorbent at a dose of 650 mg/kg after the formation of renal failure reduced uremia (urea, creatinine levels) and endogenous intoxication (level of molecular of average mass) after 21 days. Based on the studies, it was found that animals that received nanoenterosorbent at a daily dose of 650 mg/kg, show an optimal improvement in some biochemical parameters. </p

Primary undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the jejunal mesentery with a complicated course: A case report

No full text
A primary Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma (UPS) of the mesentery is a rare form of malignancy, most commonly usually affecting the soft tissues of the extremities. Due to their location in the abdominal cavity distant from the intestinal loops they remain asymptomatic for a long time. In this study, an incidental finding on imaging is presented in a 66-year-old woman. CT imaging revealed a large mass in her abdomen, with difficulty pinpointing its exact origin. Exploratory laparotomy was performed to remove the mass in its entirety. Examination of the mass showed findings consistent with an undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. She recovered well after her surgery. However, on follow-up imaging, a solitary metastatic lesion in her lung was detected. The prognosis of UPS is historically dismal with invasive treatment options currently being the preferred methods for management.</p

A multivariate analysis of veterinary preferences for NSAIDs in Nigeria

No full text
Vultures are obligate scavengers known to accomplish incredible ecological feats unmatched by other birds of prey. However, the role of animal health specialists in vulture conservation is under-emphasized in Nigeria, despite vulture’s explicit dependence on the carcasses of domesticated livestock under the regime of veterinary caregivers. In our research, we evaluate the perception of animal health specialists on vultures and the veterinary use of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) for livestock treatment in the study location. Data collated from a semi-structured questionnaire were analyzed using correspondence analysis to produce a simple visual display of the complex count data matrix. The prevalence of 10 NSAIDs was analyzed along 3 column attributes namely; Not-in-Use (NU), Rarely-Used (RU), and Frequently-Used (FU). The NSAIDs were statistically under the significant influence by the column attributes at 0.05 alpha-level (X2≤64.35;P<0.0000), with the principal axis accounting for 74.33% of the total inertia. Ketoprofen aggregated close to the centroid, while diclofenac and Ibuprofen were strongly associated with FU. Aspirin and Indomethacin inclined significantly towards the NU and RU axes, respectively. Despite the global consensus on the toxic influence of some NSAIDs on the vultures, about 90% of the research respondents were unaware of the hazards toxic NSAIDs are likely to impose on the vultures. Diclofenac has received less than enough focus, despite its extended use for livestock treatment in Nigeria. Future conservation interventions should therefore be designed to involve, engage and educate the veterinary practitioners in Nigeria. </p

Remarks on the theory of hearing-a traveling wave part two

No full text
In the paper, attention was paid to the procedure of reception and transforming auditory information, which does not comply with Bekesy’s traveling wave theory. This concerns the sound reception below the hearing threshold in some animals and birds. Discussed are some issues related to the traveling wave theory with an explanation of directional hearing. Indicated was a possibility of reception, especially, of high frequencies, directly on the receptor, without the basilar membrane, due to the conduction of sound waves through soft tissues and a bone.</p
