    Microbial quality and handling practices of raw cow milk in North Shewa Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia

    Background: Milk is universally accepted as a complete diet that plays a key role to ensure food security. However, the quality of raw cow milk is affected at various stages due to inadequate dairy infrastructure and limited knowledge of hygienic handling practices. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the microbial quality of raw cow milk and handling practices in the North Shewa zone, Oromia, Ethiopia.Methodology: Purposive sampling was used to select study districts and participants based on the available dairy production potential, milk market, and collection center. Four hundred participants were selected; 50 raw cow milk samples were collected from households and collection spots in study areas.Results: Microbial analysis indicated that the mean values of total cell counts were higher in households (4.836±0.206 in log10 CFU/ml) than 4.391±0.15 at collection spots. Similarly, the mean values of Staphylococcus aurous were 2.470±0.038 at the household level and 2.249±0.093 at collection spots. The mean values of E.coli, yeast count and mould count were however, higher at collection spots (5.414±0.100, 3.372±0.091, 2.670±0.037) than household level (3.343±0.122, 2.944±0.074, 2.479±0.039), respectively.Conclusions: The higher total counts and mean values of microbial loads of economic and public health significance; like Staphylococcus aurous and E. coli at household level and collection spots indicated poor hygienic raw cow milk handling practices. Therefore, awareness should be created among the dairy cattle producers and milk collectors to minimize economic losses through milk spoilage with soil microbes and the risk of consumer safety due to zoonotic pathogens.&nbsp;</p

    Transosteal radial free flap in palate reconstruction

    The reconstruction of the palate has been a challenge for the reconstructive surgeon, due to the multiple complications that arise, such as infection, dehiscence, and fall of the flap used. We present the description of a new radial free flap fixation technique, commonly used for this type of reconstruction. This transosteal fixation technique prevents dehiscence and flap descent in all cases performed, by combining two widely used procedures, the radial free flap, and the Lefort I osteotomy, with excellent results.</p

    Wood-cement-steatite panels used in replacement of gypsum boards in residential and commercial buildings: contribution to the thermal mass

    This article reports the results of a study carried out to evaluate the influence of wood-cement-steatite partitions on the thermal performance of a small building. The interior walls of two identical 2.0 × 2.5 × 3.0 m experimental wooden frame huts (tiny houses, with one door and one window), designed and built following the National Building Code of Canada, were covered with standard gypsum boards in one case (GB hut) and a combination of gypsum boards and wood-cement-steatite panels in the other case (WCSP hut). The thermal behavior of both huts, located on the campus of Laval University, in Québec (QC), Canada was monitored over a testing period extending from mid-march to the first week of July 2019. Depending on the moment during that period (cold weather, mild weather) and the characteristics being evaluated, the temperature inside the huts was conditioned or not with an electric heater. The following parameters were recorded: outdoor temperature, the temperature inside the two huts, and, when applicable, their electricity consumption. In cold weather, the wood-cement-steatite panels contributed to reducing the electricity consumption by 5.2% over that of the reference GB hut. In mild weather, wood-cement-steatite panels were found to improve the comfort inside the test hut by leveling off the temperature variations, with reductions ranging from 0.3 °C to 3.8 °C. Both the differences in electricity consumption and indoor temperature variations were determined to be statistically significant, with p - values inferior to 0.005. The results generated in this part of the study further strengthen the potential of WCSP as a real alternative to gypsum boards for drywall partitioning in residential and commercial buildings. In addition to their many advantageous constructive properties, such as water resistance, flexural strength, screw withdrawal resistance, and fire resistance, the improvements they could yield in energy efficiency and thermal comfort make it a quite promising partitioning option.</p

    Compounding effects of adult ADHD and comorbidities on intimate relationships

    Although research about adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (adult ADHD) has become more prevalent since the condition’s recognition in the 1990s, information remains scarce about if and how its psychiatric comorbidities may compound impact on functionality in relationships. Studies abound on the independent effects on relationships of two of adult ADHD’s most common comorbidities - mood and substance use disorders. However, adults with ADHD sans comorbidities often experience interpersonal relationship difficulties due to the disorder’s signature symptoms alone - hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness - as well as due to adult ADHD’s oft-observed dimension of emotional lability. The primary purpose of this study is to review the literature regarding the impact on intimate relationships of adult ADHD, as well as look at the potential compounding effects of comorbid mood or substance use disorder. The secondary purpose of this paper is to examine the literature on integrative therapy to treat couples wherein at least one partner struggles with adult ADHD, with or without comorbidities. Future research and practice implications are also discussed, including the hope for focus on the positive aspects of ADHD for individuals and relationships.</p

    Analysis of the Environmental Quality of Seawater in the Bohai Sea, China

    According to the survey data on seawater quality in the Bohai Sea from 2020 to 2021, a single-factor data analysis was carried out on the seawater environmental quality of Liaoning, Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong and the offshore waters. The results show that the seawater quality of the Bohai Sea in 2021 Compared with the more serious pollution in 2020, the main pollutants are active phosphate and inorganic nitrogen. The spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of the eutrophication state index are high at the top of Bohai Bay and low on the outside, high in the southeast and low in the northwest. And through the comparison of water quality data for two years, the organic pollution and eutrophication near Panjin, Dalian, Yingkou and Weifang are getting worse day by day and the content of inorganic nitrogen and active phosphate in some waters in the Bohai Bay has increased. The total amount of materials discharged into the sea is controlled.</p

    Hemoglobin genotype variants and Plasmodium Falciparum malaria in children receiving postpartum care at Faith Alive Foundation Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria

    More and more data are showing a link between hemoglobin genotypes and Plasmodium falciparum malaria. In order to establish the prevalence of hemoglobin genotype variants and their association with P. falciparum malaria in children receiving postpartum care at Faith Alive Foundation Jos, Plateau State, we study the distribution of these variants. From each sample, thick and thin blood films were created, and hemoglobin genotypes were determined using electrophoresis. Out of 172 samples examined, 131 (76.16%) were infected with P. falciparum malaria while 41 (23.84%) were not infected. There was no significant difference (p &gt; 0.05) in the distribution of P. falciparum malaria in relation to hemoglobin genotypes. P. falciparum malaria was highest in AA with 92 (70%) and SS was the least with 12 (9%). There was no significant difference (p &gt; 0.05) in th+++e prevalence of P. falciparum malaria in relation to age. P. falciparum malaria infection was highest in the age group ≥ 12 months than age group 0 - 11 months. There was no significant difference (p &gt; 0.05) in the prevalence of P. falciparum malaria in relation to sex. The result depicted that P. falciparum malaria infects more males than females. There was also no significant difference (p &gt; 0.05) in the prevalence of P. falciparum malaria in relation to months. The month of September had the highest prevalence of P. falciparum malaria followed by October and August respectively. It is, therefore, recommended that public health education campaigns for mothers and healthcare givers be intensified to create awareness that will lead to the reduction of human-vector contact, especially in children.</p

    Molecular Techniques for identification applied to food: A review

    This review aims to address the use of molecular techniques applied to the identification of food. The application of molecular techniques in food is large, several authors comment on the detection and quantification of strains of pathogenic microorganisms present in foods and the presence of toxins and waste allergens not related to specific goods in production lines. They are also used to control the authenticity of many foods, very important for receiving raw material industries, identification of genetically modified organisms, and genetic selection in yeast for fermentation processes. The methods presented in this review proved to be fast, and effective and could be effective substitutes for chemical and physical methods, chemical and biochemical, producing results with greater accuracy, reliability and speed of analysis.</p

    Refractory electrical storm in coronary artery disease patient, challenges of dying heart

    Electrical storm most often occurs in patients with coronary artery disease and left ventricular dysfunction. We report a case of recurrent ventricular Tachycardia (VT) in a 49-year-old male patient previously known to have an inferior myocardial infarction and hypertension, presented with ischemic chest pain accompanied by dizziness, hypotension, and tachycardia. An electrocardiogram showed monomorphic VT. A prompt synchronized electrical cardioversion under sedation has reverted the rhythm to the sinus. An echocardiogram showed left ventricular segmental wall motion abnormalities and ejection fraction of 37%. Then the condition complicated by recurrent VT necessitates multiple electrical cardioversions and defibrillation given for recurrent ventricular Fibrillation (VF) and short cardiopulmonary resuscitations that revived the patient from cardiac arrests. The patient had received a total of 103 electrical shocks over 15 days during which, he developed circulatory and respiratory compromise that required mechanical ventilation on twice occasions. Meticulous care including central monitoring and inotrope for hypotensive episodes was provided. A coronary angiogram showed normal left anterior descending and circumflex coronary arteries and a totally occluded right coronary artery which was failed to be revascularized in an attempt of angioplasty. The patient was successfully weaned off the ventilator and run a quiet course afterward. An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator was placed while maintained on oral amiodarone, mexiletine, metoprolol, and omega-3-acid ethyl esters, then discharged asymptomatic without recorded dysrhythmias. This case report underscores the challenges encountered throughout the management of such particular life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias and their impact on patient safety.</p

    Glucose and insulin levels’ linkages with breast cancer factors

    Serum lipid and&nbsp; glucose metabolisms are considered as the intermediary mechanisms for connecting obesity and Breast Cancer (BC). The article aims to identify the linkages between diabetes biochemical factors such as glucose &amp; insulin and BC biochemical factors such as Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1), adiponectin, Homeostasis Model Assessment score Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), resistin, leptin. These objectives can be focused on&nbsp; the two separate statistical models of glucose &amp; insulin based on the remaining factors. From the mean model of glucose, it is observed that mean glucose level is directly linked with BC women (P= 0.023), leptin (P&lt;0.001), HOMA-IR (P&lt;0.001), while it is inversely linked with the interaction effects between HOMA-IR &amp; leptin (i.e., HOMA-IR*leptin (P&lt;0.001)) and adiponectin &amp; leptin (i.e., adiponectin* leptin (P= 0.088)). Similarly, from the mean model of insulin, it is observed that mean insulin level is directly linked with HOMA-IR (P&lt;0.001), leptin (P&lt;0.001), and the interaction effects Age*MCP-1 (P= 0.091), glucose*adiponectin (P= 0.043), glucose*resistin (P&lt;0.001), MCP-1*HOMA-IR (P&lt;0.001), while it is reciprocally linked with MCP-1 (P= 0.026), resistin (P&lt;0.001), adiponectin (P= 0.078), HOMA-IR*body mass index (BMI) (P&lt;0.001), glucose*HOMA-IR (P&lt;0.001), leptin*adiponectin (P= 0.071). There are more linkages of the variances of insulin and glucose with the BC biochemical factors. Based on the summarized results it is interpreted that diabetes biochemical factors such as insulin and glucose are highly linked with BC biomarkers such as MCP-1, HOMA-IR, leptin, resistin, and adiponectin.</p
