Differences in psychological outcomes associated with institutional betrayal
A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Clinical Psychology, University of Regina. vii, 83 p.Institutional betrayal occurs when institutions fail to effectively support or protect the individuals who rely on them (Smith & Freyd, 2013). Institutional betrayal often happens after an adverse or traumatic event such as a sexual assault (Smith & Freyd, 2013). Previous research has found that institutional betrayal can result in worse mental and physical health outcomes following adverse experiences, even when the adverse experience is controlled for (Smith & Freyd, 2013). The purpose of this study was to investigate if differences in psychological outcomes exist for institutional betrayal following different types of adverse experiences, including racism, adverse medical experiences, and student sexual assault. Several hypotheses were posited. A total sample of 147 participants was collected with a relatively even split between groups (racism n = 34; adverse medical experiences n = 42; sexual assault n = 49; control n = 22). Participants were presented with an online questionnaire that asked about their adverse experiences and measured common psychological outcomes including anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms. Participants were separated into groups based on their adverse experiences and asked to complete a measure of institutional betrayal. Significant differences between groups on all symptom measures were found using one-way ANOVAs, and post hoc multiple comparisons revealed that the sexual assault group scored highest on all symptom measures. Regression analyses showed that demographic factors significantly predicted symptoms, and the addition of adverse experiences significantly improved the prediction of psychological symptoms. Results regarding institutional betrayal were mixed, showing that by itself, institutional betrayal significantly predicted PTSD symptoms, but did not predict anxiety symptoms. The addition of institutional betrayal to demographic factors and adverse experiences did not significantly add to the predictive power of the model, suggesting that it may have less of an impact on psychological symptoms than demographics and experiences. No moderation effects were found between institutional betrayal and adverse experiences. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.Studentye
Treatment of compasion fatigue with internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy
A Practicum Report Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Social Work, University of Regina. iii, 92 p.Compassion fatigue is a phenomenon regarding the psychological impact of bearing witness to the ongoing suffering of clients when working in a helping profession. Compassion fatigue, secondary trauma, professional burnout, and vicarious trauma are terms used interchangeably to explain this phenomenon. Compassion fatigue is the unique experience of those working in helping professions as it combines the emotional impact of secondary trauma exposure but also the frustrations and burnout related to the limitations to helping. Left untreated compassion fatigue can result in mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. The Online Therapy Unit is a psychology lab at the University of Regina for research, education and service delivery. The Wellbeing Course is an online transdiagnostic treatment course based on cognitive behavioural therapy for the treatment of anxiety and depression offered by the Online Therapy Unit. The purpose of this research project was to recommend specific adaptations that could be made to the current course, such as inclusion of specific trauma content and self-care strategies, that make the course a viable treatment option for helping professionals experiencing anxiety and depression stemming from compassion fatigue. Psycho-education about the components of compassion fatigue would make the course an appropriate treatment option. This research project is a qualitative exploratory study and includes a literature review, findings from experiential learning, content analysis of the Wellbeing Course and analysis of secondary data.Studentye
Improvement of field fluorometry estimates of chlorophyll a concentration in a cyanobacteria-rich eutrophic lake
Instrumented buoys are used to monitor water quality, yet there remains a need to evaluate whether in vivo fluorometric measures of chlorophyll a (Chl a) produce accurate estimates of phytoplankton abundance. Here, 6 years (2014–2019) of in vitro measurements of Chl a by spectrophotometry were compared with coeval estimates from buoy-based fluorescence measurements in eutrophic Buffalo Pound Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada. Analysis revealed that fluorometric and in vitro estimates of Chl a differed both in terms of absolute concentration and patterns of relative change through time. Three models were developed to improve agreement between metrics of Chl a concentration, including two based on Chl a and phycocyanin (PC) fluorescence and one based on multiple linear regressions with measured environmental conditions. All models were examined in terms of two performance metrics; accuracy (lowest error) and reliability (% fit within confidence intervals). The model based on PC fluorescence was most accurate (error = 35%), whereas that using environmental factors was most reliable (89% within 3σ of mean). Models were also evaluated on their ability to produce spatial maps of Chl a using remotely sensed imagery. Here, newly developed models significantly improved system performance with a 30% decrease in Chl a errors and a twofold increase in the range of reconstructed Chl a values. Superiority of the PC model likely reflected high cyanobacterial abundance, as well as the excitation–emission wavelength configuration of fluorometers. Our findings suggest that a PC fluorometer, used alone or in combination with environmental measurements, performs better than a single-excitation-band Chl a fluorometer in estimating Chl a content in highly eutrophic waters.Support of buoy operations and research was obtained

A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Statistics, University of Regina. xii, 97 p.The statistical model of mixture distributions has become an important tool for analyzing complicated phenomena in the real world. This approach has a wide range of applications in the fields of biology, medicine, environment and engineering. Based on the characteristics of the Exponentiated Kumaraswamy model, researchers have carried out a series of explorations and studies. However, in order to provide a more appropriate model to support real-life applications and to make our data analysis more reliable, it is still meaningful to explore new models. Therefore, in this thesis, we propose a novel mixture model, which is a modified one based on the combination of the Type-II Half Logistic distribution and the Exponentiated Kumaraswamy distribution. We defined it as the Modified Half Logistic - Exponentiated Kumaraswamy (MHL-EK) distribution. Then, we will study its statistical properties, such as quantile function, moments, incomplete moments, etc. Next, maximum likelihood estimation will be used for the parameter estimation of the MHL-EK model. We will also present a related simulation study. Finally, we apply this model to three real data sets and give our analysis for them. The results show that the MHL-EK distribution is a relatively suitable model among the candidate models.Studentye
