    No full text
The aim of this thesis is to illustrate how the use of big data can be detrimental to representative democracy. The first chapter analyses the transition from the information and knowledge society to the algorithmic society, focusing on the definition of big data, its generation and the types of analysis that can be carried out with it, as well as describing the automated processing of data, i.e. profiling and political microtargeting (successor to micromarketing). The second chapter analyses, in the light of the research carried out in the first chapter, the information and cognitive warfare based on the profiling of fake news and post-truth; it examines whether the law should rethink itself in a certain sense, i.e. as a rhetorical tool. The third chapter, based on the studies of Nickerson and Rogers and the Cambridge Analytica scandal, discusses the involutions of democracy, describing technocracy, post-democracy and counter-democracy; it also considers the "theory of perceived opinion" and the deceptive designs of the platforms that "extrapolate" the consent of the interested parties to the processing of their data. In the fourth and last chapter, the principle of the explainability and knowability of algorithms will be analysed on the one hand, and the recent regulations (DSA, DMA and IA ACT) implemented by the EU legislator on the other

Vibrazioni Non Lineari e Caos negli Ingranaggi Spiroconici

This study delves into the intricate dynamics of a real spiral bevel gear system, used inside a helicopter transmission system, through various nonlinear dynamic analysis tools. In a real scenario, a gear pair may experience three different contacts: forward contact, tooth separation, and backside impact. In this study, all possible types of contacts are considered, which leads to calculating the tooth mesh stiffness in both the forward and the reverse motions due to the geometry of the spiral bevel gears. A nonlinear finite element method-based program, Transmission3D-Calyx, is used to perform a precise semi-static analysis to determine the system's mesh stiffness. Because of the mismatch between the tooth surface of the gear and pinion, a loaded tooth contact analysis and an unloaded tooth contact analysis are conducted. The motion equations of the system are obtained by applying Lagrange's theorem. The nonlinear governing differential equations with time-varying parameters represent a non-smooth and non-autonomous dynamical system. Indeed, the backlash introduces nonlinearity into the system, and time-dependent mesh stiffness leads to parametric excitation. The GearDyns-SBG program is developed to solve the governing equations under different working conditions. The considered dynamical methodology includes backward and forward simulations to track stable branches, enhancing the understanding of the system's behavior. Three main different dynamical systems are considered to evaluate the dynamics of the spiral bevel gear pair with consideration of an average-mesh stiffness (average slope approach), an adaptive-mesh stiffness (hybrid analytical-computational approach), and a constant shaft stiffness. The hybrid analytical-computational approach accounts for the nonlinearity due to Hertzian contact stress. The dynamical mesh force was computed using a combination of polynomial interpolation techniques and loaded tooth contact analyses. The accuracy of the adaptive-mesh stiffness approach was validated by comparing its results with those obtained from a verified nonlinear finite element method simulation, demonstrating robust agreement and the efficacy of our approach. Moreover, the nonlinear dynamic scenario of spiral bevel gears is investigated by considering the effect of torsional shaft stiffness. Shafts can have different lengths and diameters, which significantly affects the dynamic response of the system. For a deeper understanding of the torsional shaft stiffness effect, a system with three degrees of freedom is developed. Besides, the effect of shaft stiffness was investigated from a design point of view. This comprehensive study contributes to a deeper understanding of nonlinear dynamical systems and offers reliable methods for predicting and analyzing their behavior under various conditions. Our analysis reveals significant insights into system dynamics, particularly through the use of FFT spectrum, nonlinear time series analyses. Amplitude-frequency analyses, Poincaré maps, phase diagrams, and recurrence plots are used to visualize the dynamic responses, revealing complex behaviors including tooth separation, backside contact, and strong irregularities in time histories. We explore phenomena such as boundary crises and period-doubling cascades, emphasizing the role of the largest Lyapunov exponent and fractal dimension in characterizing chaos. Additional measures such as 3D bifurcation analyses offer deeper insights into the system's dynamics, capturing phenomena like chaos-chaos transitions, route-to-chaos, boom-and-bust cycles, and trapping phenomena. The investigation compares the dynamics of the system under different working conditions and examines the periodicity of the system’s responses

Science-fiction – especially in its dystopian versions and narratives – from being a visionary anticipation of the future has, over the past few years, become almost an “exact science” that photographs the continuous metamorphosis of the present. Social science-fiction, as opposed to “positivist and neo-positivist” science fiction (permeated with optimism regarding a future of progress, and a sense of wonder regarding technical-scientific advances), seems to have largely demonstrated the “goodness” of several of its precursor insights and its validity in terms of a narrative strand that serves as a seismograph of the tensions and moods of different eras. From Orson Welles to Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem, social science fiction has provided, in narrative form, a whole series of (often prescient) interpretative keys to social criticism, and has effectively investigated the conflicts of human societies (with interpretative insights sometimes similar to the frames elaborated by the historical sociological field of conflict theories). With regard to the imaginative becoming predictive capacities of social science fiction, after outlining its basic characteristics and overall framework, this article sets out to analyze a theme present in various writers of this strand (from Asimov to Ursula Le Guin): that of demography. And one of the most frequent responses to demographic issues coincides with the choice of dystopian political regimes inspired by technocracy – as in the case of the colonization of outer space and other planets in search of resources and solutions to overpopulation. This article therefore sets out to analyze the «demographic question» as an exemplary case study of the narrative mechanisms of social science-fiction, with particular reference to Italy in the historical period from the 1960s to the 1980s and the figure of Lino Aldani (1926-2009), a national pioneer (and theoretician) of “humanist science-fiction”

This thesis addresses the monitoring and prediction of landslide dynamics, considering a spectrum ranging between rapid earth slide-earthflows and slow-moving, deep-seated landslides located in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (Trentino Alto-Adige) and the Northern Apennines (Emilia-Romagna). These landslides, which pose significant geohazards, require precise monitoring to improve risk management and understanding of their behaviour. By integrating advanced remote sensing techniques and predictive models, this research provides valuable insights into both slope displacement detection and landslide acceleration forecasting. The first part of the study applies digital image correlation (DIC) algorithms—normalized cross-correlation (NCC) and phase correlation (PC)—to high-resolution airborne optical and LiDAR data. Collected through multi-temporal surveys between 2019 and 2021, the datasets were analysed at three test sites (Corvara, Ganderberg, and Trafoi landslides), each featuring different landslide types and movement rates. Validation using GNSS surveys and manual point tracking demonstrated the ability of DIC algorithms to identify and quantify multi-pixel displacement patterns in non-vegetated areas. However, challenges were noted in densely vegetated regions, where sub-pixel displacements are harder to detect. Despite this limitation, these techniques effectively differentiated stable and active slope regions, offering valuable support to traditional ground-based monitoring. The second section focuses on rapid, high-precision landslide monitoring using Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) GNSS modules. This approach, which avoids the need for ground control points, was tested on the Ca’ Lita landslide (Northern Apennines) from October 2020 to March 2023. By deploying UAVs for eight surveys, the study captured the movement of optical targets installed across the landslide’s active zone. The results revealed substantial planimetric and vertical displacements, ranging from 0.09 m to 71.61 m horizontally and from -2.05 m to 5.94 m vertically. Validation against permanent GNSS data confirmed the method’s accuracy, with maximum differences of 0.18 m (planimetric) and 0.21 m (vertical). The UAV-based approach is shown to be highly efficient for landslide monitoring, combining speed and precision. The third part of the thesis focuses on the development of rainfall intensity-duration (ID) thresholds to predict landslide accelerations. By analysing 100 acceleration events from 15 landslides monitored in the Northern Apennines and Eastern Alps, this research evaluates the predictive power of existing rainfall thresholds and proposes new, optimized thresholds. Effective rainfall, adjusted for factors like evapotranspiration and snowmelt, is introduced as a more accurate measure of landslide triggering conditions in mountainous areas. Using a ROC-based approach, eight new thresholds were developed and tested against existing ones, showing enhanced predictive performance. Though the dataset’s balance and rainfall data processing pose some limitations, the research advances our understanding of rainfall-induced landslides and provides improved tools for forecasting hazardous events in hilly and alpine environments. In summary, this thesis contributes to the development of effective monitoring and prediction techniques for landslides. By integrating remote sensing, UAV technologies, and refined rainfall thresholds, it offers practical solutions to enhance risk assessment and mitigation strategies in geologically active areas
