He completed the conquest of the province, finally defeating the Caledonian tribes in the far north of Scotland at the Battle of Mons Graupius, in the process achieving a reputation for efficiency and sound command. His son-in-law was the historian Cornelius Tacitus who wrote a short biography to honour the memory of the great man a few years after his death. This commentary deals with the final 8 chapters of the work which are concerned with Agricola's return to Rome after his service in Britain and his final years. It intended for the benefit of advanced Latin students to assist them in translating and understanding the text
How Various Experimental Learning Activities Affecting on Students' Learning Motivation and Satisfaction in Business Education
Get PDFThis mixed-method study investigates the impact of “real-world” and “hypothetical” experiential learning activities on student satisfaction and motivation among business undergraduates and postgraduates at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Employing a sequential exploratory design, the study consisted of a qualitative phase involving semi-structured interviews with 7 course instructors and a quantitative phase surveying 426 business students.
The qualitative findings yielded four main themes: (1) diversity of experiential learning activities,
(2) importance of balancing soft and hard skill development, (3) perceived impact on student motivation and satisfaction, and (4) challenges and support in implementing experiential learning. The quantitative results indicated that the formats and subject nature of experiential learning significantly predicted various aspects of student motivation and satisfaction, with real-world activities associated with higher levels of motivation, satisfaction, domain knowledge improvement, and positive influence on work and life aspects.
The study contributes to the literature by offering empirical evidence for the differential learning effects of individuals based on their gender and work experience, emphasizing the importance of considering individual differences in the design and implementation of experiential learning activities. The findings have significant implications for theory and practice in business education, providing support for key experiential learning theories and models while offering recommendations for educators, administrators, and policymakers.
Lastly, recommendations for future research are discussed
How Does it Heal? Isolation and Re-engaging in Education the Role of Trauma Related Practice in a Post-Pandemic Britain
Get PDFThe Covid-19 pandemic, its multiple lockdowns and restrictions have had a well documented and often discussed effect on the mental health and wellbeing on the whole of the UK and more particularly, on school children who have missed significant periods of schooling (BBC, 2020). Research suggests that, as well as the lack of formal education, the associated experiences gained from school life have also been lost (Ofsted 2020 and DofEd 2022). This literature review adopts a subjectivist approach to collate, examine and compare current and historical research on the impact of trauma, focussing particularly on the impact of childhood trauma on resilience and the ability to learn (McFarlane & Giralmo 1996). It looks at the implications for learning and future health outcomes for those who experienced the Covid-19 lockdowns and examines the evidence of response in terms of an effective response which supports learners and builds resilience with a view to building resilience which is a vital component of effective learning (Maddi, 1999). The dissertation finds that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions placed on young people can be considered an example of childhood trauma and so a trauma informed response was needed to support children as they returned to schools and continues to be helpful as the long-term impact continues to be revealed (Poston, 2009; Maddi, 1999). The dissertation also finds that the children most impacted were often those who required the most support and suggests that increased funding is necessary to ensure that a whole school approach is employed and that resources are in place to bridge the widened gap between children from affluent and less well-off backgrounds (BBC, 2020; Ofsted 2022)
What challenges and enabling factors influence the effective use of digital systems among staff working in an acute paediatric setting?
Get PDFIntroduction: The NHS Wales Paediatric Welsh Nursing Care Record (Paeds WNCR) project aims to standardise and digitalise paediatric inpatient and risk assessment documents across Wales. This research, conducted in a rural Health Board (HB) in West and Mid Wales, examines the sociotechnical environment and how the multidisciplinary team (MDT) interact with the current digital systems.
Methods: A pre-implementation study assessed the usability of the Welsh Clinical Portal (WCP) and WelshPas (WPas) using the industry-standard System Usability Scale (SUS) along with open-ended surveys. The study also explored the digital confidence and attitudes of the staff. Results: The SUS scores indicated that both WCP (mean and median = 61.25) and WPas (mean=62.27, median = 62.50) fall below the industry standard for acceptable usability (n=68), suggesting an urgent need for improvement. Qualitative feedback revealed diverse staff experiences and an ethnographic-narrative approach was used to describe their lived experiences.
Discussion: Four themes emerged: user experience and confidence, benefits, challenges, and change. The complexity of factors affecting digital system use was categorized into three themes: Health Information Technology, Clinical Standards, and Change Management. These factors can be plotted along a continuum that ranges from challenging to beneficial. The exact impact of each factor is very individual to that person.
Conclusion: Despite the limited generalisability due to small sample sizes, this research provides insights into the current use of digital record-keeping systems and HIT in clinical practice by paediatric staff. It highlights the scarcity of prior research focused on paediatric staff’s experiences with HIT implementation and the sheer frustration, anger and irritation expressed by the majority of the HCPs, which mirrors the negative influences caused by poorly performing digital devices, slow Wi-Fi networks, system interfaces that do not support clinical workflows. This research on the perspectives and practices of this group of paediatric staff has the potential to contribute new insights to the field, specifically within the hospital-based paediatric areas in Wales
Continuums and Conjunctions: An assemblage of Eastern and Western architectural and philosophical perspectives
Get PDFContinuums and Conjunctions examines spatial relationships in contemporary Chinese high- rise architectural design in the context of rapid urbanization. Traditional Chinese architecture was guided by the principles of Feng Shui, placing emphasis upon a harmonious interrelation of architectural and natural environments and social contexts. An increase in urban development and population has led to an increase in vertical spatial arrangements which commonly disregard the complexities of environmental and social rhythms.
The research proposes a reimagining of contemporary urban architectural design that combines Chinese traditional spatial theory with Western continental philosophy. The aim of the research is to create architectural assemblages that operate in harmony with regional characteristics, climates, and lifestyles. The research explores the intersection and integration of Eastern and Western philosophical perspectives, specifically traditional Chinese Feng Shui theory and methods, and Gilles Deleuze's concepts of assemblage, rhizome, and becoming.
Feng Shui principles were traditionally applied to horizontal spaces, and focused on specific relationships of intersection and connection, and the flows between spaces. This research explores the potential transformation of contemporary high-rise architecture through the application of spatial principles outlined in Feng Shui philosophy. This rhizomatic thinking establishes the potential for indistinguishable zones and transitional and intermediate spaces to be produced between the horizontal and vertical and the virtual and actual within the configuration of a high-rise building.
The research presents an architectural design that performs the relationship between Yao and becoming in architectural space, emphasizing the importance of variation, adaptation, and the transformation of elements. The integration of Eastern and Western philosophical perspectives in this research demonstrates how architects can reorientate their approach to contemporary urban design and proposes inclusive and expansive methodologies to enhance their practice
Study on the culture experiential and symbolic consumption of a heritage site: A case study of Mount Lushan in China

Nevertheless, exploring tourist experiences based on the CCT lens in heritage tourism is still limited, especially in Chinese culture. The research aims to determine how a cultural heritage site’s symbolic and experiential consumption impacts Chinese consumers and how culture affects the experience of Chinese tourists. Thus, it focuses on constructing tourists’ cultural experience and personal meanings and further negotiating their possible aspects of identity through consuming cultural attributes in the world heritage site of Mount Lushan.

This dissertation will focus primarily on the impact of OEMs moving towards the Circular Economy, the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and integration with the Internet of Things. Sustainability, Smart Systems and Cloud Computing will play significant i4.0 related supporting roles in these key areas.
There are significant challenges and pitfalls for OEMs wishing to adopt i4.0, however those that change too slowly could risk becoming the Kodak or Blockbuster of the car industry. Whilst the optimal route to i4.0 may not be clear; this dissertation will aim to highlight examples of OEMs that are embracing these future trends and highlight key foundational areas that should be focused upon to achieving this next step in industrial evolution.
As well as being a research study this dissertation will also consider key questions that have arisen in the automotive industry in recent years. These include examining how ‘green’ and sustainable Battery Electric Vehicles are when compared to their Internal Combustion Engine counterparts. A practical study into the used and applications of AI in the automotive sector will also be explored.
This dissertation will aim to provide a broad scope of research to the reader in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of i4.0 with the car industry today whilst also considering future uses and applications
The Cult of the Muses in Thespiai
Get PDFEven though they are mentioned in the Homeric poems, it was Hesiod who first introduced the Heliconian Muses to the Western world. From the Boeotian poet onwards, Muses were no longer homeless, and mount Helicon and its surroundings would forever be thought of as their space. The town where Hesiod lived, Ascra, happened to be located by the Valley of the Muses, a territory that ended up being controlled by one of the most prominent poleis of the Boeotian Confederacy; Thespiai.
It is my intention to venture into this notion Hesiod planted and explore the dimensions of the cult of the Muses in Thespiai. There is archaeological evidence supporting the presence of a Sanctuary of the Muses in their Valley, although its chronology only goes back to the Hellenistic age. There appears to be, therefore, a gap between Hesiod’s testimony and the third century, in which many doubts arise regarding the relationship between Thespiai and the Muses.
I will ‘bridge’ this gap using archaeological, literary, and epigraphical sources as a basis to construct a theoretical approach to the topic, focusing on identity as the key element to analyze in this situation. I aim to analyze the relationship between the Muses and Thespiai, in order to conclude if there was an organized cult during centuries, if their link was only symbolic, or if neither possibility can be confirmed
