'Visualcy': the Progenitor of Literacy and Numeracy

    Get PDF
This article aims to enhance the pedagogy of drawing by integrating relevant aspects of art history and aesthetics with perception and communication theories. Visualcy is defined as an articulacy with visual languages, from which the more familiar ‘3Rs’ (Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic), alluding to literacy and numeracy, evolved. It embraces not only the more familiar definition of ‘visual literacy’ in the sense of how people perceive, interpret and learn from existing visual imagery, but also the semogenic facility for producing the means to understanding through the articulation of visual elements (line, shape, tone, texture, colour) in the construction of new images. After reviewing the role of drawing in cultural evolution, the article discusses drawing in relation to aesthetics, before outlining a pedagogy of drawing designed to nurture visualcy, of central importance to human culture

Automated throughput optimisation: a cost effective I4.0 solution

    Get PDF
The escalating consumer demand for cost-effective, high-quality products has compelled manufacturers to enhance efficiency while curbing expenses. The emergence of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies has ushered in an era of closed loop manufacturing, enabled by real-time data processing and feedback. However, the prohibitive costs of I4.0 tools often restrict access for smaller manufacturers and machine shops. Additionally, the shift to I4.0 necessitates a distinct skill set, further disadvantaging smaller players. This research proposes an innovative approach leveraging existing resources. By introducing a method that integrates a touch trigger probe with aging, albeit, functional CNC machines, establishing a closed loop system. Through intelligent G-code utilisation, this system automates the recording and management of Process Control Indicators (PCIs) while optimising inspection frequencies and throughput. By adopting this method, manufacturers can embrace I4.0 methodologies without the burden of substantial capital expenditure or extensive workforce upskilling. This study not only offers an immediate solution for manufacturers but also serves as a pioneering model for wider I4.0 adoption. By highlighting the potential of repurposing existing machinery, this research highlights a path toward increased efficiency, competitiveness, and accessibility in the manufacturing landscape

    Get PDF
Background: Core-stability exercise is an exercise modality used in the management of patients with low back pain (LBP). Telerehabilitation is a new treatment approach that is gaining traction as an alternative rehabilitation approach. This study determined the effect of telerehabilitation-based core stability exercise (TCSE) and clinical-based core stability exercise (CCSE) on pain-related disability, pain self-efficacy, and psychological factors in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain (CLBP). Materials and methods: Fifty participants (24 males and 26 females) with a mean age of 40.28 years participated in this randomized controlled study and were recruited from the out-patients physiotherapy clinic of 2 tertiary hospitals in Lagos State and were allocated into two groups (telerehabilitation-based core stability exercise group and clinical-based core stability exercise group which serves as the control) using computer-generated random number sequence. Pain-related disability, pain self-efficacy, and psychological status were assessed at baseline, and at the completion of the 4th and 8th week. Patients received supervised intervention protocols twice weekly for 8 consecutive weeks. Independent t-test, Mann–Whitney U test, and Friedman test were used in analyzing the data at an alpha level of 5%. Results: There was a statistically significant difference (P = 0.0001) noted within each group (telerehabilitation-based core stability exercise group and clinical-based core stability exercise group) in all the outcome measures assessed (Pain Disability Index, Pain Self-efficacy Questionnaire and Depression-Anxiety-Stress scale) but no group was superior to one another when compared. Conclusion: Telerehabilitation-based core stability exercise was as efficacious as clinical-based core stability exercise in decreasing pain-related disability, improving pain self-efficacy and psychological factors, and should be incorporated as part of the treatment program in musculoskeletal rehabilitation for individuals with non-specific CLBP. Exploring Legal Frameworks and Social Realities: A Comparative Study of Ismāʿīlī Women in Fatimid Egypt and the Contemporary Dawoodi Bohra Community

    Get PDF
This dissertation examines the influence of Kitāb Daʿāʾim al-Islām, the seminal legal text by the eminent Fatimid jurist al-Qāḍī al-Nuʿmān, on the lives of Ismāʿīlī women in Fatimid Cairo and its enduring impact on the Dawoodi Bohra community. The study investigates how the legal and doctrinal principles articulated in the Daʿāʾim were reflected in the daily lives, educational opportunities, and occupations of women during the Fatimid era, while emphasizing the gender equity promoted by this legal system. By drawing on historical texts, official correspondence, and documentary evidence, the dissertation bridges the gap between legal theory and the lived experiences of women in Fatimid Cairo. The study also explores the legacy of the Daʿāʾim in the Dawoodi Bohra community, which traces its spiritual heritage to the Fatimids. It examines how the teachings of the Daʿāʾim continue to shape the lives of Bohra women, particularly in the realms of education, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. Reflecting on the researcher’s positionality as a member of this community, the dissertation acknowledges how this background informs the analysis. Ultimately, this dissertation argues that the gender-equitable principles embedded in Fatimid jurisprudence have not only endured but have been actively preserved and practiced within the Dawoodi Bohra community, demonstrating the lasting influence of Fatimid legal thought on modern Ismāʿīlī women’s lives

Ordering Tang China: Cultural memory, Emperor Taizong and the Essentials

    Get PDF
In Ordering Tang China: Cultural Memory, Emperor Taizong and the Essentials, Kelly Ngo presents the first book-length study in English of the Essentials for Bringing about Order from Assembled Texts (Qunshu zhiyao 群書治要), a rulership anthology that became renowned for its model of governance in ancient and early modern East Asia. The Essentials is one of the earliest Chinese anthologies designed to educate rulers in cultivating an ethical character and governing the state. Commissioned for the Tang emperor Taizong in the 620s, the Essentials articulates a distinctive political philosophy through a collection of excerpts from earlier canonical, historical, and masters writings, and their commentaries. Examining the Essentials and its transmission in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam through the lens of cultural memory, Ngo explores the foundation, conduct, and impact of Zhenguan rulership, which became synonymous with good governance among later generations of ruling elites, scholars, and historians in China and beyond. By connecting the textual discourse with an analysis of its use and reception across the region, Ngo demonstrates that the Essentials was a key source of Confucian political thought and practice during the early Tang dynasty. In accounting for the place of the Essentials in political advice literature, Ngo illustrates how it drew from the ancient Confucian heritage and was still responsive to contemporaneous political concerns, suggesting that the Essentials played a part in the success of Zhenguan political practice. Ordering Tang China also includes the first English-language translations of portions of the seventh-century anthology, with reference to partial translations published in nine languages. Utilizing the theory of cultural memory to study the Essentials not only opens a fresh approach to learning about the imperial consumption of literature, as well as the theory and practice of emperorship, but also offers a case study for how to study Chinese governance literature, including its “mirror for princes” genre

Axé as the cornerstone of Candomblé philosophy and its significance for an understanding of well-being (bem estar)

    Get PDF
According to Candomblé, axé is present in every living being and is necessary to life. To develop and maintain a sense of well-being, one must maintain a balanced level of axé which is linked to a reciprocal relationship between human beings and orixás [African deities]. This article will explore the link between the spiritual force axé and well-being [bem estar] within Candomblé philosophy. Starting with explaining axé within the context of Candomblé and its concept of personhood, the paper will reflect in the latter part on the concept of well-being from the perspective of axé and put forward an argument for the inclusion of Candomblé in philosophy of religion

Entrepreneurship and Economic Development: A Leadership Framework

    No full text
Scholars have increasingly lauded the importance of entrepreneurship activity to economic development. Unlike in the Western context where that critical importance has been vigorously documented, a survivalist natured entrepreneurship is reported to be a common trend in the SSA context where high unemployment and poverty levels remain major challenges. Reviewed literature also points to a high business discontinuation rate in SSA compared to other continents. Leveraging the fit viewpoint of leadership, this chapter forwards a dual leadership framework that combines entrepreneurs’ and government aspects to contribute not only to knowledge development in this area but also to pinpoint core leadership initiatives for refocusing entrepreneurship activity to impact economic development in the SSA setting. In line with these dual contribution targets, recommendations are offered as well as core directions for advancing research flagged

Cultural heritage buildings are revitalized to promote culture instead of being neglected or demolished. For locals, the revitalization of heritage buildings symbolizes a commitment to the community and a taste of collective memory. The study attempts to test the effectiveness of heritage cultural building on visitors’ post-experience behavior through cultural identity and place attachment. “Cultural activities engagement” and “knowledge transfer” serves as moderating attributes. Their moderating the effects on cultural identity and place attachment are examined, respectively. A valid sample size of 348 from four heritage buildings located in Hong Kong: Tai Kwun, Police Married Quarters (PMQ), Mei Ho House and The Mills. A data analysis platform for PLSSEM is chosen for this study. Results demonstrate that the effectiveness of heritage building revitalization on visitors’ local cultural identity and emotions leading to place attachment. In our study, the effectiveness of heritage building encompasses three elements which includes appearance and components; technology and planning as well as contribution. Knowledge transfer positively moderates the effectiveness of heritage building revitalization and cultural identity. However, cultural activity engagement negatively moderates place attachment. Findings also exhibit that place attachment in heritage building revitalization leads to a positive experience extension. For the practical contribution, the study provides insights to policy makers and planners for historic building design such as appearance and components, technology in facilitating local visitors’ local identity

An Exploration of Collaboration Between Employers, Professional Bodies and Academics in Business Curricula in UK Higher Education Institutions: A Phenomenological Study

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to provide a phenomenological exploration of the practice and experience of collaboration between employers, professional bodies, and academics in business curricula in UK higher education. This research is topical and significant, as it explores the professional practice of collaboration between academics, employers and professional bodies in UK university business curriculum design and delivery at a time when industry, government and education policy changes are increasingly driving industry-informed business curriculum development to improve graduate outcomes, employability, and knowledge transfer. The insights gained from this research can therefore benefit UK higher education institutions, employers, and professional bodies in designing models for collaboration in business curricular design and delivery in an increasingly complex UK higher education environment. Literature sources were reviewed relating to curricular collaboration, co-creation, co-production, and best practice in successful collaborative relationships. Primary research data was gathered from in-depth qualitative interviews with 8 employers, 4 professional bodies and 20 UK university academics in UK business school curriculum and graduate employability development roles. The study findings identified that effective business curriculum collaboration can have significantly positive impacts on graduate outcomes, student employability skills, future-proofed curriculum design, commercial and civic relationships between universities, employers, and professional bodies. The thematic interpretivist analysis of the interviews revealed a willingness to participate in innovative business curricular collaboration, tempered by a lack of structural and operational resources and frameworks to implement this effectively in a connected manner. Key findings overall are that while there are pockets of highly successful business curriculum collaboration, real-world professional praxis concerning this phenomenon evidences several areas requiring improvement such as lack of resources, reward, systems, and processes to support collaboration effectively. This research provides evidence to deepen understanding of the phenomenon of UK HEI business curricular collaboration between academics, employers, and professional bodies, and puts forward a conceptual framework for more effective collaborative curriculum relationships. The research should therefore contribute to future knowledge, through more holistic and connective conceptualisations of curriculum collaboration between employers, academics and professional bodies in business and management subject areas to transform curriculum design, delivery, knowledge transfer, and successful graduate outcomes
