No full textFinland's household plastic recycling rate is currently below the EU's 2025 targets. Taking laundry detergent packaging as an example case, this chapter presents the findings from interviews with Finnish residents on their plastic recycling behavior. The key challenges to recycling identified are limited storage space for recyclables, distant recycling facilities, unclear sorting instructions, and packaging designs that are difficult to recycle. These factors highlight the need for recycling-friendly product design and accessible recycling infrastructure. The study also identified consumer preferences for environmentally friendly products. Our findings highlight the need for integrated efforts from manufacturers, policymakers, and the community to enhance product design and recycling systems, emphasizing the importance of clear labeling and education to promote sustainable practices

The Impact of EU Data Protection Law on National Criminal Procedure Rules:A Finnish Perspective on Two CJEU Cases
No full textIn this paper, I examine the rising influence of EU data protection law in national criminal proceedings through the analysis of two recent CJEU judgments – Ministerstvo na vatreshnite raboti (C-205/21) and Bezirkshauptmannschaft Landeck (C-548/21). After briefly presenting each case, I describe Finnish reactions to them and discuss possible legislative responses from national legislators in relation to criminal procedure rules concerning the systematic collection and registration of biometric data of suspects, and searches of mobile devices. Subsequently, I analyse the relationship between EU data protection law and national criminal procedural law more broadly. I argue that although the recent CJEU case law further limits the national procedural autonomy, and may also risk some negative effects on the efficiency of criminal investigations, this is necessary for the effective protection of rights related to data protection and privacy in the law enforcement sector

No full textThis exposition explores the concept of speculative utopias within artistic research, offering glimpses into potential futures at the intersection of artistic imagination and futures thinking. Developed as textual concepts, these speculative utopias serve as vehicles for envisioning inclusive and sustainable futures, addressing complex socio-economic, cultural, and environmental challenges. The study employs a multidisciplinary approach by integrating aerial photography of Iceland’s landscapes with futures thinking methodologies and artistic research practices. These photographs function not merely as documentation but as speculative utopias that prompt critical reflection on climate adaptation, socio-political transformation, and public engagement. A unique aspect of the research is the use of artificial intelligence (ChatGPT), which supported iterative narrative development and reflexive inquiry. Through this exploration, the research offers alternative visions for resilient futures catalysing transformative dialogue and deepening reflection on the politics of the present while imagining possibilities for the world to come
Using Service Design to Create Smart Jewellery Low-Fi Prototypes for Pandemic Challenges
No full textThis chapter investigates the conceptual design and potential use of jewellerylike wearable devices during pandemics, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, via service design facilitation. We report three workshops involving service prototyping held in Norway, Finland and Brazil, where the participants took part in three different activities. First, they participated in an empathybuilding activity that was part of the service design practice. The participants received three images depicting the Covid-19 time challenges and created notes about them. Second, they received a low-fi prototyping kit to create wearable jewellery that could address the challenges discovered. Third, a subset of the concepts was chosen for a more in-depth ideation concerning the stakeholders and services required for the functionality of the wearable device. These wearables aim to assist individuals in navigating the challenges of pandemic times and provide practical applications for everyday use. This research advances the understanding of how to concept, prototype and design human-centric aesthetically pleasing wearables.</p
