The Perceived Complexity of Well-Being Within the Change and Development in Higher Education
In Finland, the higher education system is facing many societal, demographic, and pedagogical changes that inevitably also have an impact on various members of the university community who face them in their everyday work and studies at the universities. This research focused on a systemic and interdisciplinary approach and analyzed the elements of well-being during the changes that occurred in the university consortium. The consortium, formed by a scientific university and a university of applied sciences, is considered here as an example of the changing world of work in higher education (HE). The research question set for this research was: How do the members of the consortium perceive well-being in the systemic development? This paper reports on our phenomenographic research in which 29 members of a northern Finnish university consortium were interviewed with the focus group interview method. The findings showed that their perceptions were related to experiences, interaction, and competence within the development work, and covered various dimensions of the consortium, ranging all the way from the individual level to the surrounding society. Viewed using the framework for a positive university, suggestions for leading well-being within the development of higher education are presented. The findings are also discussed in the light of international scalability.</p

This book invites teachers to address Plant Illiteracy - i.e. the lack of plant-related education. Plant Illiteracy (Uno, 2009) is a consequence of a lack of Plant Awareness (Pany et al., 2024), described by Wandersee and Schussler (2001) earlier as Plant Blindness. From a plant perspective, the lack of attention they receive could be seen as an effective “protection mechanism” because it keeps plants hidden from predators –after all, they cannot run away or otherwise defend themselves. Only flowers are colourful, which attracts pollinators, as are fruits, whose seeds can be dispersed. From a human perspective, however, a lack of Plant Awareness means the inability to perceive plants in the environment and to recognize their role in the environment (Pany et al., 2024). This lack of Plant Awareness leads to poor knowledge about plants and an inadequate understanding of their importance for climate and landscape (Ryplová & Pokorný, 2020). The Plant Literacy Handbook for Teachers (PR1), which is available at https://planteducation.eu/, offers a detailed introduction to the topic of Plant Awareness (or formerly Plant Blindness). There are numerous methods to bring plants into the focus of secondary school students. Through a variety of hands-on activities, they can explore the nature of plants and their ecological function.The first chapter carries us to the arctic circle with the question: how do plants adapt to cold climate? It suggests field trips to nearby natural areas. The second chapter wants to show the importance of correct names for plants and was tested in an outdoor environment. In the third up to fifth chapter the impact of vegetation on the climate, especially temperature and water in the atmosphere is researched with inspiring methods, such as thermovision cameras – look inside! After that we take you into the discussion on the relationship between biodiversity, humans, economy, politics and society and look on biodiversity with a sociological perspective. The seventh chapter introduces the use of digital plant identification, which is the basis for research on biodiversity, as we cannot research this topic without knowing the variety of species. In chapter eight we focus on water plants because the experiments with them enable the research on oxygen and biomass production. Using inquiry-based field activities we can discover, how can aquatic plants influence the chemistry in water bodies and in this way the life of other aquatic organisms.The final four chapters offer examples for online activities. The first one which our project team developed is focused on the cooling function of urban vegetation and uses Padlet learning platform. In the second online learning activity, we will try to discover the diversity of plant species using an online environment of Nearpod. The third online activity uses the online game on the competition of different demands on land use, the fourth one is an example of how to use online simulations to engage students into an intense dealing on this material, as they have to translate the international sources

Reassessing deterrence:the effectiveness of administrative sanctions across three EU regulatory frameworks
The European Union (EU) legislator is increasingly relying on administrative sanctions in business regulation. These sanctions are regarded as effective tools for encouraging corporate compliance as they leverage specialised enforcement authorities, streamlined procedures, and fewer procedural safeguards to achieve their goals. However, empirical evidence on their deterrent effects remains limited. Existing empirical studies tend to focus on individual regulatory sectors, lacking a comprehensive understanding of the impact of EU corporate administrative fines. This article seeks to address this gap by compiling and reviewing empirical evidence from three EU regulatory sectors: cartel enforcement under competition law, market abuse governed by the Market Abuse Directive (MAD) and Market Abuse Regulation (MAR), and data protection under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Using an integrative literature review, the article not only provides an initial understanding of what drives effective deterrence but also *E.L. Rev. 437 outlines a research agenda for future empirical studies on corporate administrative fines in the EU, fostering a more cohesive perspective across regulatory boundaries

Molecular Footprints of Quaternary Climate Fluctuations in the Circumpolar Tundra Shrub Dwarf Birch
The Arctic tundra biome is undergoing rapid shrub expansion (‘shrubification’) in response to anthropogenic climate change. During the previous ~2.6 million years, glacial cycles caused substantial shifts in Arctic vegetation, leading to changes in species' distributions, abundance and connectivity, which have left lasting impacts on the genetic structure of modern populations. Examining how shrubs responded to past climate change through genetic data reveals the demographic dynamics that shaped their current diversity and distribution and sheds light on the resilience of Arctic shrubs. Here we test scenarios of Quaternary demographic history of dwarf birch species (Betula nana L. and Betula Glandulosa Michx.) using Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers obtained from RAD sequencing and approximate Bayesian computation. We compare the timings of modelled population events with ice sheet reconstructions and other paleoenvironmental information to untangle the impacts of alternating cold and warm periods on dwarf birch. Our best supported model suggested that the species diverged in the Mid-Pleistocene Transition as glaciations intensified. We found support for a complex history of inter- and intraspecific divergences and gene flow, and secondary contact occurred during both ice sheet expansion and retreat. Our spatiotemporal analysis suggests that the modern genetic structure of dwarf birch results from transitions in climate between glacials and interglacials, with ice sheets acting alternatively as a barrier or an enabler of population mixing. Tundra shrubs may have had more nuanced responses to past climatic changes than phylogeographic analyses have often suggested, with implications for future eco-evolutionary responses to anthropogenic climate change
Näkymätön sateenkaarevuus:sosiaalityön opiskelijoiden seksuaalisuuden ja sukupuolen moninaisuutta koskevat asenteet ja tiedon tarpeet
Artikkelissa kysytään, millaisia seksuaalisuuden, sukupuolen ja perheiden moninaisuutta koskevia asenteita ja tiedon tarpeita sosiaalityön maisteriopiskelijoilla on. Tavoitteena on lisätä ymmärrystä sosiaalityön yliopistokoulutuksen kehittämisen tarpeista seksuaalisuuden ja sukupuolen moninaisuuden opettamiseen liittyen. Aineistona on opiskelijoille suunnattu kysely, jota on analysoitu kuvailevin tilastollisin menetelmin ja khiin neliö -testillä. Opiskelijoiden kyselyssä raportoimat asenteet olivat enimmäkseen positiivisia, mutta heidän ymmärryksensä sateenkaarisyrjinnän eri muodoista ja sateenkaari-ihmisten erityisistä sosiaalityön palvelutarpeista oli puutteellista. Opiskelijan omalla identiteetillä vaikutti olevan vaikutusta vastauksiin. Seksuaalisuuden, sukupuolen ja perheiden moninaisuuden näkökulmia on vahvistettava sosiaalityön tutkimuksessa ja opetuksessa, jotta varmistetaanse, että kaikilla sosiaalityöntekijöillä on valmiudet työskennellä sateenkaariasiakkaiden kanssa vahvistavasti ja syrjinnänvastaisesti
