No full text“It’s nice now that our house is connected to the big world” – hopes, concerns, and expectations related to the telephone among the residents of Lapland in the 20th centuryThis study explores the meanings that residents of northern Finland have attributed to the telephone, as well as the hopes and fears associated with it. The development—or lack thereof—of telephone infrastructure in past decades is linked to the concept of human security. This includes feelings of insecurity in cases of illness or accidents, concerns about poor connections, experiences of injustice, perceptions of the right to participate and stay connected, and the view of the telephone as an enabler of economic activity. In Lapland, telephone lines were extended even to remote villages with the aim of providing residents with a means of communication. However, telephone technology did not always function as expected, and “telephone misery” was also the result of interpersonal conflicts among local residents. The ways in which the telephone was used in Lapland often differed from southern Finland, with state-funded public telephone points playing a central role.The justifications for acquiring a telephone changed over the course of the 20th century. For instance, the need to report car accidents became more prominent from the late 1950s onward. In the 1960s, the growth of tourism, hiking, and the popularity of summer cottages became evident in applications for telephones, as did rising environmental concerns from the late 1960s onwards. Thus, the telephone was not only a catalyst or accelerator of change, but also an indicator through which we can study how everyday life and communities evolved. Establishing telephone connections in Lapland often required unique technical solutions, such as transmission towers built on mountain peaks. While the telephone was generally welcomed, the construction of telephone lines, the placement of public telephone points, and the introduction of new technologies encountered opposition at various times throughout the decades

Empowering (Smart) Jewellery:Identifying Tensions between Innovation and Sentiment
No full textThe traditional values of jewellery—such as remembrance, self-expression, or symbolic meaning—are often overlooked in smart jewellery research. To examine how technological integration might influence these values, we conducted an online survey with 81 participants. Our findings suggest that many participants were reluctant to embed technology into their empowering jewellery pieces, with some describing it as “contaminating” them. At the same time, participants expressed interest in extending jewellery with features such as health monitoring and other functional utilities. We contribute initial insights into how technology may reshape the perceived meaning and value of jewellery, offering implications for the design of future smart jewellery
Sci-Fi-Inspired Interaction and Evaluation of the Memory Orb

This paper extends previous work by presenting a use case, interactions, and a user study directly grounded in a movie scene, guiding the design of hovering, selecting, translating, rotating, and scaling 3D objects. Results show performance comparable to traditional virtual reality controllers and positive user reception, supporting further exploration of this novel, fiction-inspired interface

No full textYhteiskuntatieteissä on yhä enenevissä määrin oltu kiinnostuneita vaihtoehtoisista, sosiaalista oikeudenmukaisuutta edistävistä taloudellisen ajattelun ja toiminnan muodoista. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan suomalaisissa koronakeskusteluissa rakentuvia taloudellisen uudelleenjakamisen mielikuvituksia kysyen, millaisia toimijuuksia ja toimijasuhteita ne sisältävät ja millaiseksi keskeisimpien toimijoiden odotetaan uudelleenjakamista tekevän. Artikkelissa uudelleenjakaminen hahmottuu kompleksisena suhteiden kenttänä, jossa toisiinsa kytkeytyvät erilaiset toimijat, uudelleenjakamiseen kohdistetut odotukset ja koronakriisin kaltaiset yhteiskunnalliset tapahtumat. Koronakeskusteluissa uudelleenjakamiseen kohdistui erityisesti tehokkuuteen, vastavuoroisuuteen, lainmukaisuuteen ja läpinäkyvyyteen liittyviä odotuksia. Analyysissa tuodaan esiin, miten institutionalisoituneiden toimijoiden lisäksi lain, rahan, markkinoiden ja digitaalisen teknologian kaltaisille tekijöille rakentuu rooli uudelleenjakamisen välittävinä toimijoina, joiden tehtäväksi asettuu uudelleenjakamisen suuntaaminen odotuksia vastaavaksi. Vaikka koronakeskusteluissa korostettiin tarvetta uudenlaisille ajattelutavoille, niissä rakentuvat uudelleenjakamisen mielikuvitukset kuitenkin pikemminkin uusintavat kuin haastavat kulttuurisia käsityksiä julkisten organisaatioiden keskeisestä toimijuudesta
China’s Domestic Discourse on Status-Building in the Arctic
No full textAn extensive body of international relations literature demonstrates that a state’s status influences how other states perceive its intentions and evaluate its policies and actions on an international level. For China, which the West has often viewed through the threat theory lens, status-seeking has been especially important to legitimize its position as a rising power in international society. In the Arctic context, where China does not fulfil the territorial definition of a regional state, speculations about potential risks related to the party-state's growing regional presence have been widespread. To alleviate these “China threat” perceptions among regional players, the Chinese leadership has paid particular attention to status-building and legitimization in the Arctic. Over the past decade, for example, it has invested in Arctic research and resource exploitation and increasingly participated in both official and unofficial forums discussing Arctic governance. This chapter analyses the discursive construction of China’s status in the Arctic and the party-state’s efforts to win acceptance for this status in regional politics and economics. Within social identity theory, social creativity allows a change of the criteria by which status is built, through reframing the system of values and including new criteria. Arctic scientific research and the transboundary nature of climate change effects affecting China’s climate and social and economic life are investigated through domestic official and academic debates aimed at enhancing status among Arctic stakeholders.</p
