Influence of image stimuli on design creativity:exploration of generative AI in group ideation
With the rapid advancement of AI in design, researchers have proposed that generative AI can enhance human creativity in design, particularly through AI-generated images as stimuli. To explore this, we conducted an exercise in a creative design course. The exercise began with an introduction to creative methods, followed by group ideation using a collaborative sketching method. Each participant then received an AI-generated image stimulus tailored to the design task. Finally, participants developed their best ideas and reflected on the process. The reflections were analysed alongside evaluations of the final ideas by external evaluators, who assessed the novelty and usefulness of 18 best ideas and determined their sources of inspiration. Results revealed that participants generally viewed the AI-generated image stimuli as unhelpful or irrelevant for ideation. Evaluators found that group collaboration significantly contributed to the best ideas, while AI-generated stimuli played a minimal role. These findings underscore the critical role of human interaction in collaborative ideation and suggest that AI tools, while promising, require further refinement to support creativity in group settings effectively
Kun kiertotalous saapui Rovaniemelle:Sulkeuma-analyysi politiikkaidean kotoistamisesta
Kiertotalouden käsitettä tuodaan EU:n toimesta osaksi valtioiden ja kaupunkien toimintapolitiikkaa. Tarkastelen tässä artikkelissa yhteisymmärryksen muotoja, joita kiertotalouden politiikkaidean käyttöönotto sai Rovaniemen kaupungissa. Sovellan teoreettis-metodologisena välineenä ympäristöpolitiikan tutkimuksessa käytettyä sulkeuman käsitettä. Sulkeumat ovat hetkellisesti vakautettuja poliittisen yhteisymmärryksen muotoja, joissa ristiriitaisetkin diskurssit ja väitteet sovitetaan yhteen. Tuloksissa erottuu kolme eri vaihetta. Ensimmäisessä vaiheessa kiertotalouteen liitettiin kaupungin yhtiöiden tavoitteita, mitä kuvaan aineenvaihdunnallisena sulkeumana. Toisessa vaiheessa sulkeumaa tarkennettiin ja kiertotalouden käsite otettiin ohjaamaan kaupunkiorganisaation toimintaa laajemmin. Tästä muodostui strategiseksi hallinnaksi nimeämäni sulkeuma. Muutokset kiertotaloushankkeessa loivat kriisitilan, joka johti aiemman sulkeuman osittaiseen purkautumiseen. Kolmannessa vaiheessa kiertotaloudesta tuli jätehallintaa, jossa kansalaiset nostettiin keskiöön. Tästä syntyi jätekansalaisuuden sulkeuma. Artikkeli kuvaa kestävyyssiirtymän toteuttamista kaupungeissa ja merkityskamppailua kiertotalouden käsitteen sisällöstä. Tulokset osoittavat kiertotalouden käsitteen ja paikallisten toimijoiden tavoitteiden sopeutuvan vastavuoroisesti toisiinsa. Käsitteelliset politiikkaideat yhdistävät poliittisia diskursseja, teknisiä ratkaisuja ja kaupunkien brändeihin liittyviä tavoitteita
Gamified Sustainability:Virtual Reality Escape Room for Recycling Education
We present a virtual reality (VR) escape room game to support recycling education, which is played in immersive VR utilizing a head-mounted display (HMD). By leveraging the immersive capabilities of VR and the motivational aspects of gamification, the developed game combines interactive recycling tasks with engaging escape room mechanics to build awareness and skills in waste sorting. Set in a wilderness log cabin, players sort virtual waste into appropriate bins, receiving immediate feedback to reinforce learning. This research contributes to the growing body of work in HCI on environmental education, and provides background for future studies on gamified VR experiences for sustainability education
Decolonizing Arctic Geopolitics and Security:Subaltern security dilemmas of the Sámi in times of the green transition and militarization of the Arctic
Ongoing geopolitical changes and the “arctification” of world politics are introducing new pressures on the Sámi people, whose lands stretch across the northernmost parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. While climate change has increased global and national interest in the Arctic region’s natural resources and logistical and transport potential already for some time, today land use in Sápmi is reshaped also by acute security and defense imaginaries which are promoting strong military build-up across the region. In this article, I discuss the challenges that these changes are presenting to the Sámi and to their ability to voice concern for their own rights, security and future. Focusing especially on the challenges associated with the energy transition as well as growing military land use, the article sketches out and introduces a notion of subaltern security dilemma (SSD), which is offered here as a tool for a critical, deconstructive and decolonial approach to the study of Arctic geopolitics and security in Sápmi and more broadly.Ongoing geopolitical changes and the “arctification” of world politics are introducing new pressures on the Sámi people, whose lands stretch across the northernmost parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Quick, Tangible, Playful:Reducing Barriers to Feedback
Often, we as researchers and practitioners want to get feedback on an activity. This is a surprisingly complex task, because we need to convince people to give feedback and use the time they spend interacting with us wisely. A common solution is to offer an online survey and to provide access to the survey using a QR code. This makes feedback much easier to collect and analyse. But it is not clear how many potential participants we lose by offering just a QR code option. We studied this question by comparing three feedback options at two exhibitions staged by the University of Lapland Design team. The options were tangible feedback, a paper survey, and a QR code survey. We found that most participants engaged with the tangible options, followed by paper. Only one person per exhibition used the QR code. We discuss implications for analogue versus digital feedback
Mens Nova in Mundo Virtuali:Immersive Virtual Reality Experiences for Cognitive and Creative Enhancement
The workshop ''Mens Nova in Mundo Virtuali: Immersive Virtual Reality Experiences for Cognitive and Creative Enhancement'' explores the transformative potential of immersive virtual reality (VR) technologies in enhancing human cognition and creativity. By leveraging advancements in VR, brain-computer interfaces, and sensory augmentation, this workshop examines how these tools can foster neuroplasticity, improve cognitive functions, and revolutionize creative practices across disciplines. Participants will engage in discussions on topics such as adaptive VR interventions, innovative interaction paradigms, and ethical considerations in cognitive enhancement. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the workshop aims to establish a roadmap for future research and practical applications, driving the integration of VR into everyday cognitive and creative processes
