Examining the event service quality for travelers with mobility impairments by Korean caregiver's perspective
Travelers with mobility impairments (TwMI) often have difficulty traveling alone due to various constraints and barriers. Caregivers of TwMI might play an important role in mitigating these constraints and barriers for TwMI. Knowing the event service quality for TwMI from the point of view of caregivers is essential for better quality of travel for both caregivers and TwMI. So far, although event service quality is important for people with disabilities, most of the studies have been conducted with people without disabilities. As caregivers' opinion is critical for deciding event participation, this study focused on perspective of caregivers regarding event service quality for TwMI. This study utilized structure equation modeling (SEM) analysis to empirically examine the relationship among event service quality for TwMI in terms of perspective of caregivers who accompanied TwMI to the event, caregivers' event satisfaction with TwMI, and caregivers' behavior intentions. From two event service qualities for TwMI, only service environment quality for TwMI demonstrated statistical significance on caregivers' event satisfaction with TwMI while service provider quality for TwMI had no statistical significance on both caregivers' event satisfaction with TwMI and caregivers' behavior intention. Caregivers' event satisfaction with TwMI demonstrated statistical significance on caregivers' behavior intention. Overall, this study may provide practical information to event organizers and other hospitality industries related to service quality for TwMI from various points of view
The Transformative Effect of the Internet of Things on Business and Society
This paper summarizes the discussion in a panel session on the Internet of things (IoT) at the 2017 International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) in Seoul, Korea. The panel explored a research agenda on IoT technology and its interaction with business and society. IoT refers to the ever-growing number of numerous physical devices that feature software and location-based technologies that connect together in a network and exchange data with one another. IoT has garnered significant attention in information systems due to its rapidly expanding market and demand from a wide range of stakeholders such as consumers, businesses organizations, and government agencies. The IoT may be the next industrial revolution in which interconnected physical devices will automate skills and tasks. In today’s hyper-connected economy, IoT can radically transform businesses and society through increased transparency, optimized production processes, and decreased operating expenses. Overall, the panel identified a six-pronged IS research agenda for IoT that comprises the IoT’s impact on business and society, IoT monetization and end-user services, the IoT as a distributed platform, the convergence of the IoT and blockchain, security concerns and solutions, and the IoT and ethics. The paper concludes with a future direction for IoT
A New Perspective on Terrestrial Hydrologic Intensity That Incorporates Atmospheric Water Demand
Hydrologic intensity is often quantified using precipitation without directly incorporating atmospheric water demand. We develop a hydrologic intensity index called the surplus deficit intensity (SDI) index that accounts for variation in supply and demand. SDI is the standardized sum of standardized surplus intensity (mean of daily surplus when supply > demand) and deficit time (mean of consecutive days when demand > supply). Using an observational ensemble of global daily precipitation and atmospheric water demand during 1979–2017, we document widespread hydrologic intensification (SDI; +0.11 z‐score per decade) driven primarily by increased surplus intensity. Using a climate model ensemble of the United States, hydrologic intensification is projected for the mid‐21st century (+0.86 in z‐score compared to 1971–2000), producing greater apparent intensification when compared to an index that does not explicitly incorporate demand. While incorporating demand had a minor effect on observed hydrologic intensification, it doubles hydrological intensification for the mid‐21st century
Measuring Biophysical and Psychological Stress Levels Following Visitation to Three Locations with Differing Levels of Nature
Visitation to natural environments has been linked to psychological stress reduction. Although most stress-related research has relied on self-report formats, a growing number of studies now incorporate biological stress-related hormones and catalysts, such as cortisol and α-amylase, to measure levels of stress. Presented here is a protocol to examine the effects on levels of biophysical and psychological stress following visitation to three different locations with differing levels of nature. Biophysical and self-reported psychological stress levels are measured immediately upon entering the selected locations and just prior to the visitors leaving the site. Using a "drool" method, the biophysical measure consists of 1-2 mL samples of saliva provided by study subjects upon entry to one of three study locations. As prescribed by extant literature, the saliva is collected within a 45 minute time frame following the end of the visitor’s engagement at the location. Following saliva collection, the samples are labeled and transported to a biological lab. Cortisol is the biophysical variable of interest in this study and measured using an ELISA process with a TECAN plate reader. To measure self-reported stress, the Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ), which reports levels of worry, tension, joy, and perceived demands. Data are collected at all three sites in the late afternoon through early evening. When compared across all three settings, stress levels, as measured by both the biological markers and self-reports, are significantly lower after visitation to the most natural setting
Higher CO 2 Concentrations and Lower Acidic Deposition Have Not Changed Drought Response in Tree Growth But Do Influence iWUE in Hardwood Trees in the Midwestern United States
Several important environmental influences of tree growth and carbon sequestration have changed over the past several decades in eastern North America, specifically, more frequent pluvial conditions, increased carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, and decreased acidic deposition. These factors could lead to changes in the relationship between tree growth and water availability, and perhaps even decouple the two, having large implications on how future climate change will impact forest productivity and carbon sequestration. Here, we examine the concurrent influence of the climatic water balance (precipitation minus potential evapotranspiration), CO2 concentrations, and sulfate and nitrogen deposition on radial tree growth, carbon isotopes, and intrinsic water‐use efficiency (iWUE) for several hardwood tree species in the Midwestern United States. We found that when considering the simultaneous influence of these factors, the climatic water balance is the dominant influence on annual growth. Therefore, the recent pluvial period is the primary cause of the weakening relationship between radial growth and water availability. Even during pluvial periods, water availability is the primary control on growth, with increasing CO2 concentrations and decreased SO4 deposition being secondary factors. Importantly, the weakening in the climate‐growth relationship is species specific, with Acer species having stable relationships with the climatic water balance, Liriodendron tulipifera showing a strengthening relationship, and Quercus species and Populus grandidentata exhibiting weakening. Thus, interannual variations in soil moisture unevenly impact tree growth and carbon sequestration. Our findings suggest that, despite recent pluvial conditions, increasing CO2 concentrations and decreasing acidic deposition have not buffered the impact of water availability on tree growth and carbon sequestration

First of all, it argues that that time and temporality have become favored topics within interdisciplinary research on eighteenth-century culture, especially within Britain. Second of all, it seeks to situate well-known figures, such as Isaac Newton, Henry Fielding, William Hogarth, Ludwig van Beethoven, Louis-Sébastien Mercier, Joseph Priestley, and William Cowper, within newly emergent attitudes toward temporality. Particular attention is given to the various efforts, within the music, literature, art, science, and technology, to overcome an older sense of time as cyclical or recurring
The Impact of Subscription Reciprocity on Charitable Content Creation and Sharing: Evidence from Twitter on Giving Tuesday
Social broadcasting sites have grown from an information diffusion channel to a public medium that fuels social movements such as charitable fundraising. Two mechanisms facilitate user participation in charitable social movements: content creation and content sharing. Users can create original content to express their attitude of giving and promote their most valued nonprofit organizations, enriching the depth of the conversation. They can also share others’ content to expedite the diffusion of high-quality content, expanding the breadth of the discussion. This paper investigates the impact of reciprocal and non-reciprocal followees (i.e., a followee is an account other users subscribe to) on followers’ decisions to create and share content. Analyzing the charitable movement of Giving Tuesday on Twitter, we find that original charitable content creation is prompted by reciprocal followees’ participation but not non-reciprocal followees’ participation in this movement. We also find that charitable content sharing is envoked by both reciprocal and non-reciprocal followees, with non-reciprocal having a greater impact. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of these findings
