The Effects of Partial or Total Replacement of Maize Silage by Panicum maximum Silage in Lactating Cows Rations on Ruminal Fermentation, Digestibility and Methane Production
FIVE TOTAL mixed rations (TMR) were formulated to evaluate the influence of partial total replacement of maize silage (MS) with Panicum maximum silage (PS) on digestibility, rumen fermentation and milk yield of cows. The experimental rations were TMR contained 100% Maize silage (MS, T1); TMR with 75% MS + 25% PS (T2); TMR with 50% MS + 50% PS (T 3); TMR with 25% MS + 75% PS (T 4) and TMR with 100% PS (R5). Milk yield was performed on fifty Friesian cows (10 cows per treatment) for three months. Rumen fermentation and gas production were determined with Barki rams. The results cleared that CP content of both silages were close together, but ash and NDF were higher for PS but lactic and acetic acids were high for MS. Gas production (GP) was lower for PS on both 24 and 48 h than MS. Meanwhile, both GP for soluble (a), insoluble (b) and the cumulative GP (y) were less with PS than MS, as well as DMD, OMD and SCFA. Rumen fermentation data showed higher NH3-N, less TVFA's and acetic with the increase of PS in the rations, while the control, R2 and R3 had more acetic compared to other rations. Rations contained 25 and 50 % of PS had more milk and 4% FCM yields, while the lowest milk yield was obtained by incorporating 100% PS in ration (R5). It could be advisable to PS replacing MS in ration up to 50% without any adverse effect on milk production
Lezioni sul De officiis di Cicerone presso il Regio Collegio di Bari
Bari, 1769/1770. Cacciati i gesuiti dal Regno di Napoli, le loro scuole son chiuse. Un progetto regio, ispirato da Antonio Genovesi e fortemente voluto dal ministro Tanucci, istituisce scuole pubbliche, laiche, nelle più importanti città del Regno, oltre che a Napoli. L’insegnamento culminante è quello di Dottrina degli Officj: princìpi di etica e diritto, in armonia con la legge di natura, e in ascolto delle più avanzate tendenze della riflessione filosofica europea del primo Settecento. È il tentativo di costruire un ceto dirigente diffuso, che, completando la propria formazione nell’università partenopea, avrebbe garantito il raccordo fra capitale e periferie. A Bari quell’insegnamento è tenuto da Luigi Sagarriga Visconti (1726-1781), il quale del Collegio è anche sovrintendente, rampollo di una famiglia ben in vista nella città, che si adopera per mantenere il proprio posto tra la nobiltà locale. Le lezioni che egli impartì, verosimilmente nel primo anno di istituzione del Collegio, sono qui pubblicate per la prima volta con note esplicative: si presentano come un sistematico commento al primo libro del De officiis di Cicerone, letto alla luce della dottrina giusnaturalistica continentale, ma anche con uno sguardo a libri non del tutto ortodossi. Queste lezioni documentano un esperimento culturale e sociale ambizioso ma di circoscritta efficacia, almeno rispetto al contesto barese, ma confermano anche, una volta di più, la secolare centralità dell’opera ciceroniana per una formazione etica, civile e politica
Efficacy and safety profile of biotechnological agents and Janus kinase inhibitors in VEXAS syndrome: data from the international AIDA Network VEXAS registry
Background: VEXAS syndrome, a recently identified systemic autoinflammatory disorder, poses new diagnostic and management challenges. Based on experience with other autoinflammatory diseases, anti-interleukin (IL)-1, anti-IL-6, anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) biotechnological agents, and Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis) have been widely employed in VEXAS patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the global effectiveness and safety of biotechnological agents and JAKis using data from the real-world context.
Methods: Clinical, laboratory, and therapeutic data from VEXAS patients were obtained from the international AIDA Network VEXAS registry.
Results: In total, 69 VEXAS patients were enrolled in the study. Among them, 12 patients (13 treatment courses) received IL-1 inhibitors, 12 patients (13 treatment courses) were administered anti-IL-6 agents, 8 patients (9 treatment courses) were treated with anti-TNF agents, and 16 patients (17 treatment courses) were treated with JAKis. A complete response was observed in 3 patients (23%) treated with anti-IL-1 agents, 2 patients (15%) receiving IL-6 inhibitors, 1 patient (11%) receiving TNF inhibitors, and 4 patients (23.5%) treated with JAKis. The mean prednisone (or equivalent) dosage significantly decreased during anti-IL-1 treatment (p = 0.01), while glucocorticoids changed during anti-IL-6, anti-TNF, and JAKi treatment in a non-significant fashion. A total of 21 patients experienced adverse events, 3 of which led to death (gut perforation, Legionnaires' disease, and infectious pneumonia) while on JAKis; treatment withdrawal was required for 8 out of 21 patients.
Conclusion: IL-1 and IL-6 inhibitors, along with JAKis, represent promising therapeutic options for VEXAS patients, albeit careful monitoring is mandatory to control disease activity and ensure safety
Evaluation of Surgical Protocols for Speech Improvement in Children with Cleft Palate: A Systematic Review and Case Series
Background: This systematic review investigates how different surgical techniques influence speech outcomes in children with cleft palate, focusing on the effectiveness of key palatoplasty methods and the timing of surgery on vocal function. Methods: A thorough search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted for studies published between 2014 and 2024, including clinical research reporting speech results after palatal repair, with bias assessed using the ROBINS tool. Additionally, two clinical cases are presented to demonstrate the practical application of the surgical approaches. Results: Analysis of fourteen studies revealed that modified Z-plasty and V-Y procedures enhance soft palate mobility and reduce hypernasality, although they require advanced surgical skills. Early closure of the hard palate, performed within the first year of life, was linked to improved consonant articulation compared to later surgeries. No significant differences were found between single-stage and two-stage repairs, but surgeon experience emerged as a crucial factor influencing outcomes. Conclusions: Overall, both the surgical technique selected and the timing of intervention play important roles in optimizing speech development in children affected by cleft palate
Scienza e ingegneria idraulica tra circuiti accademici, poteri dello Stato e capitale elettrofinanziario (1859-1925)
Il saggio ricostruisce la vicenda della scienza e dell’ingegneria idraulica italiana in età liberale, inquadrandola nell’ambito del problematico rapporto tra saperi esperti, poteri dello Stato e assetti socio-produttivi. L’indagine ruota attorno al nesso che tiene assieme incorporazione delle risorse idriche, modernizzazione produttiva e State-building. Vengono individuati due momenti principali dell’idraulica di età liberale: una prima, di impronta agricolturista e policentrica, a vocazione «regionalista», orientata all’assetto del territorio, alla regimentazione fluviale e alla difesa della proprietà; una seconda, industrialista e produttivista, segnata dall’emergere di un’intellettualità tecnica «organica» all’industria idroelettrica ed espressione delle nuove funzioni regolatorie dello Stato. Viene inoltre messa in luce la tensione tra formazione teorica e applicazione sperimentale nelle scuole per ingegneri, nonché il lento riconoscimento dell’idraulica come «scienza di Stato», incentrata non più soltanto su competenze di tipo costruttivo ma anche statistico-cartografiche, oltre che sulla nozione di bacino idrografico. La scelta di ricondurre la periodizzazione all’età liberale si deve prevalentemente al tentativo di esplorare il ruolo dell’idraulica italiana in una fase piuttosto coerente, in cui alla costruzione e al consolidamento degli apparati tecnico-scientifici dello Stato unitario si affianca progressivamente il protagonismo dei nuovi soggetti industriali, in particolare di quelli elettrofinanziari.The essay reconstructs the development of Italian hydraulic science and engineering during the Liberal Age, framing it within the complex relationship between expert knowledge, state power, and socio-productive structures. The investigation centers on the link that connects the incorporation of water resources, productive modernization, and state-building.
Two main phases of hydraulic science during the Liberal Age are identified: the first, agrarian in nature and polycentric, with a "regionalist" orientation, focused on land management, river regulation, and the defense of property; the second, industrialist and productivist, marked by the emergence of a technical intelligentsia "organic" to the hydroelectric industry and reflective of the new regulatory functions of the State.
The essay also highlights the tension between theoretical training and experimental application in engineering schools, as well as the gradual recognition of hydraulics as a "science of the State"—a field increasingly based not only on construction-related expertise, but also on statistical and cartographic competencies, and on the concept of the river basin.
The choice to limit the periodization to the Liberal Age stems mainly from the intention to explore the role of Italian hydraulics during a relatively coherent phase, in which the construction and consolidation of the technical-scientific apparatus of the unified State is progressively accompanied by the rising prominence of new industrial actors, particularly those in the electro-financial sector
Acarofauna of Neotropical reptiles: Integrative morphology and vector competence of zoonotic pathogens
The Neotropical region stands out as a megadiverse area in terms of herpetofauna, hosting more than 4457 species, 2233 of which are distributed across South America. Reptiles are recognized as amplifiers and reservoirs of several pathogens, yet their role in disease cycles and the vectorial potential of their mites and ticks remain poorly understood. These hosts are infested by over 500 species of mites and ticks, classified into 61 genera across 13 families within the orders Trombidiformes (Acariformes), Mesostigmata, and Ixodida (Parasitiformes). Some of these arthropods may serve as vectors of reptile vector-borne diseases (RVBDs), that include bacterial, viral and protozoal pathogens of zoonotic concern. In this article, we explore the main groups of mites and ticks that infest reptiles in the Neotropical region, with a particular focus on vector-borne zoonotic pathogens of reptiles. In addition, we discuss the intricate relationships between these animals, arthropod vectors, and the zoonotic pathogens they may transmit

In this context, a testimony of Risorgimento women writers is proposed around the fire of the poetry of Laura Beatrice Oliva Mancini, in dialogue with Giannina Milli, Angelica Palli, Maria Giuseppa Guacci and Grazia Mancini Pierantoni
Condensation of vanishing photon emission rates in random atomic clouds
In the collective photon emission from atomic clouds both the atomic transition frequency and the decay rate are modified compared to a single isolated atom, leading to the effects of superradiance and subradiance. In this article, we analyze the properties of the Euclidean random matrix associated with the radiative dynamics of a cold atomic cloud, previously investigated in the contexts of photon localization and Dicke super- and subradiance. We present evidence of a phase transition, surprisingly controlled by the cooperativeness parameter, rather than the spatial density or the diagonal disorder. The numerical results corroborate the occurrence of such a phase transition at a critical value of the cooperativeness parameter, above which the lower edge of the spectrum vanishes, exhibiting a macroscopic accumulation of eigenvalues. Independent evaluations based on the two phenomena provide the same value for the critical cooperativeness parameter
Measurement of D0- D ̄ 0 mixing and search for CP violation with D0 →k+π- decays
A measurement of the time-dependent ratio of the D0→K+π- to D ̄0→K+π- decay rates is reported. The analysis uses a sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb-1 recorded by the LHCb experiment from 2015 through 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The D0 meson is required to originate from a D∗(2010)+→D0π+ decay, such that its flavor at production is inferred from the charge of the accompanying pion. The measurement is performed simultaneously for the K+ π- and K- π+ final states, allowing both mixing and CP-violation parameters to be determined. The value of the ratio of the decay rates at production is determined to be RKπ=(343.1±2.0)×10-5. The mixing parameters are measured to be cKπ=(51.4±3.5)×10-4 and cKπ′=(13±4)×10-6, where RKπcKπ is the linear coefficient of the expansion of the ratio as a function of decay time in units of the D0 lifetime, and cKπ′ is the quadratic coefficient, both averaged between the K+ π- and K- π+ final states. The precision is improved relative to the previous best measurement by approximately 60%. No evidence for CP violation is found
Photobiomodulation-induced choriocapillaris perfusion enhancement and outer retinal remodelling in intermediate age-related macular degeneration: a promising therapeutic approach with short-term results
Purpose: To evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) on choriocapillaris (CC) perfusion and drusen volume in patients with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: In this retrospective pilot study, 30 patients receiving PBM therapy and 30 age-matched controls were analysed. Treatment consisted of 8 sessions over 4 weeks using the EYE-LIGHT® device. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), low luminance visual acuity (LLVA), mean drusen volume (MDV), and CC flow deficit percentage (FD%) were evaluated at baseline and 2-month follow-up. Results: The PBM group showed significant improvements in BCVA (Δ +3.2 ± 1.4 letters, p = 0.042), reduction in drusen volume (Δ –0.003 ± 0.001 mm3, p = 0.028), and decrease in choriocapillaris FD% (Δ –3.1 ± 1.4%, p = 0.024), while no significant changes were observed in the control group. Changes in choriocapillaris FD% correlated with BCVA improvement (r = –0.54, p = 0.002) and drusen volume reduction (r = 0.35, p = 0.042). Conclusions: PBM therapy induces significant choriocapillaris remodelling in intermediate AMD, associated with functional improvement and drusen volume reduction. These findings suggest a potential therapeutic role of PBM in modulating choroidal perfusion in AMD
