Musei e beni culturali dell’Università degli Studi di Bari “Aldo Moro”. Un progetto per la valorizzazione del patrimonio di Ateneo
L'impegno per la valorizzazione del patrimonio monumentale della ‘Aldo Moro’ è stato ancora di recente perseguito attraverso la mostra del 2020 Il museo che non c’è. Arte, collezionismo, gusto antiquario nel palazzo degli Studi di Bari (1875-1928) (Edifir, Firenze, collana “Le voci del museo). Certo è cruciale segnalare a quanti lavorano e vivono l’Università, dipendenti e studenti, l’importanza dei ‘contenitori' frequentati quotidianamente, specie quando, come nel caso del suddetto edificio, si tratta di un bene straordinario (non si dimentichino però, tra gli altri, anche il palazzo d’Aquino e il convento di San Francesco, a Taranto, il palazzo in Strada Torretta, villa Larocca, il palazzo delle Poste, il Museo Orto Botanico, a Bari) che è d’obbligo far conoscere non solo ai cittadini pugliesi, ma anche a quanti giungono in Puglia per ricerca, dall’Italia e dall’estero. Anche alla luce dell’esperienza internazionale (European Academic Heritage Network (www. universeum.it), l'iniziale lavoro sulle singole sedi monumentali magari collegate a ‘contenitori’ museali - di per sé fondamentale -, è da considerare come un punto da cui ripartire: da un lato, con una lettura
innovativa e complessa del rapporto Ateneo-Città, anche per via delle frequenti sovrapposizioni tra insediamenti universitari e nodi urbani socialmente sensibili o in via di trasformazione (centro storico di Bari e Polo Universitario Ionico a Taranto); dall'altro, con una riflessione sul patrimonio mobile di proprietà dello
stesso Ateneo, o a esso affidato. Quest'ultimo, un materiale eterogeneo - per cronologia e provenienza - che si rivela comunque spesso di notevole interesse, sia dal punto di vista storico-artistico, sia sotto il profilo storico-archeologico, specie quando si relaziona con gli spazi dell’Università e con il territorio su cui
l'Istituzione insiste. Una lettura di questo genere è supportata anche dalla convinzione che il tema dei ‘Beni culturali’ trovi nell'Ateneo barese uno spettro ampio di competenze nei campi cruciali della tutela e della valorizzazione: oltre alle consolidate linee di studio sul versante umanistico, si guardi, in particolare, ai campi della giurisprudenza, della comunicazione, dell'economia, che spesso su queste tematiche convergono per ragionare di conservazione e di gestione. Lavorare in sinergia è una meta per sviluppare l’idea ‘Patrimonio di Ateneo’, soprattutto come modello operativo didattico e campo di ricerca, anche con il supporto delle Digital Humanities, aspetto da mettere ora a sistema con le coordinate del progetto CHANGES (Cultural Heritage Active Innovation for Nex-Gen Sustainable Society) che vede Uniba impegnata negli Spoke 1 (Historical

The bona caduca were those portions of inheritance or those legacies denied to heirs or legatees who were deemed celibates by the lex Iulia de maritandis ordinibus (18 bce). With the approval of the lex Papia Poppaea (9 ce), these penalties were partially extended to the orbi. Under the sole enforcement of the lex Iulia, the bona caduca increased the portions of other heirs and were claimed by the treasury (aerarium) only if the inheritance was “vacant.” However, due to a provision in the lex Papia, they were henceforth instead primarily assigned to the patres and secondarily to the treasury

The following thesis, developed in collaboration with the industrial partner Bettery S.r.l., falls within the framework of bio-based and synthetic materials for energy storage. It addresses two main topics:
1. The development of redox-active organic species with an open-shell electronic configuration for use as redox mediators in Li-O2 semisolid redox flow batteries.
2. The development of sustainable biorefining processes capable of producing carbonaceous materials with potential applications in energy storage devices.
In Chapter I, the main energy storage devices are presented, along with a critical analysis of their key advantages and disadvantages. Among these, Li-O2 technology emerges as one of the most promising solutions in terms of energy and power density for replacing traditional fossil fuels. However, Li-O2 batteries still suffer from several challenges, primarily the high overpotentials during charge and discharge processes. One possible solution to this issue is the use of organic redox mediators (ORMs).
In Chapter II, the main families of ORMs are discussed, with a focus on species having an open-shell electronic configuration, i.e., inert organic free radicals. Additionally, examples of bifunctional ORMs, suitable for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), are presented. Among the open-shell redox mediators, the tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl radical (TTM) was selected as an inspiration for the design of new polybrominated and polyfluorinated trityl radical cores. Two new polyhalogenated trityl radicals were designed, synthesized, and characterized as molecular building blocks for the development of novel bifunctional trityl redox mediators.
In Chapter III, TTM-like singlet diradicaloids were tested, for the first time, as a new class of ORMs. A definition of “singlet diradicaloid” is provided, and the main advantages and drawbacks of diradicaloids compared to free radicals are discussed. Among these, the recently reported TTM-like Thiele hydrocarbon (TTH) and TTM-like Chichibabin hydrocarbon (TTM-TTM) exhibit promising potential for the ORR in Li-O2 batteries. The electrochemical performance of TTH in a carbonaceous Li-O2 semisolid redox flow cell exceeds that of TTM, used as a benchmark, by a factor of four. Consequently, the TTH core was coupled via nucleophilic aromatic substitution with piperidine to develop a new bifunctional diradicaloid, named PTTH. This new molecule was fully characterized and tested in Bettery S.r.l.'s electrochemical setup, where it retained its catalytic effect on the ORR and doubled the performance of the TEMPO radical (used as a benchmark) in the OER. Finally, a new and more efficient synthetic route for the preparation of TTM-TTM was introduced, opening new perspectives in the design of bifunctional ORMs based on this diradicaloid.
In Chapter IV, an ethanosolv process for the lignin fractionation was investigated, aiming to obtain a biopolymer embedded with electroactive sites. This material holds promise as a substitute for fossil carbon in carbonaceous Li-O2 semisolid redox flow batteries or supercapacitors. An overview of lignin extraction methods is provided, highlighting the advantages of lignin-first approaches, which help preserve the biopolymer native structure. Lignin was extracted from agricultural wastes, such as walnut, almond, and pistachio shells, focusing on the effects of ball milling pretreatment and microwave irradiation on the extracted lignin structure and yield. Interestingly, a novel electroactive lignin-based biopolymer was obtained through a one-step extraction-phenolization through an esterification between the redox-active gallic acid and the aliphatic OH groups of lignin. This new material was fully characterized both structurally and electrochemically. The proposed extraction process opens new perspectives for the functionalization of lignin with electroactive molecules.La seguente tesi, sviluppata in collaborazione con il partner industriale Bettery S.r.l., è incentrata sullo sviluppo di materiali bio-based e sintetici per l'accumulo di energia. Essa affronta due principali tematiche:
1. Lo sviluppo di molecole organiche redox-attive con una configurazione elettronica open-shells utilizzabili come mediatori redox nelle batterie Li-O2 semisolide a flusso.
2. Lo sviluppo di processi sostenibili in grado di produrre materiali carboniosi con potenziali applicazioni nei dispositivi di accumulo di energia.
Nel Capitolo I vengono presentati i principali dispositivi di accumulo di energia, accompagnati da un'analisi critica dei loro principali vantaggi e svantaggi. Tra questi, la tecnologia Li-O2 emerge come una delle soluzioni più promettenti in termini di densità di energia e potenza per sostituire i combustibili fossili tradizionali. Tuttavia, le batterie Li-O2 soffrono ancora di diverse problematiche, fra cui le alte sovratensioni durante i processi di carica e scarica. Una possibile soluzione a questo problema è l'uso di mediatori redox organici (ORMs).
Nel Capitolo II vengono discusse le principali famiglie di ORMs, con un focus sulle specie con una configurazione elettronica open-shells, ossia i radicali organici inerti. Inoltre, vengono presentati esempi di ORMs bifunzionali, adatti sia per la reazione di riduzione dell'ossigeno (ORR) che per la reazione di evoluzione dell'ossigeno (OER). Tra i mediatori redox open-shells, il tris(2,4,6-triclorofenil)metil radicale (TTM) è stato selezionato come molecola modello per il design di nuovi nuclei radicalici polibromurati e polifluorurati. Sono stati progettati, sintetizzati e caratterizzati due nuovi radicali tritilici polialogenati come precursori per lo sviluppo di nuovi mediatori redox bifunzionali.
Nel Capitolo III, sono stati testati per la prima volta i diradicaloidi di singoletto derivanti dal TTM, come nuova classe di ORMs. In questo capitolo viene fornita una definizione di "diradicaloide di singoletto" e vengono discussi i principali vantaggi e svantaggi dei diradicaloidi rispetto ai monoradicali. Tra questi, l'idrocarburo di Thiele derivante dal TTM (TTH) e l'idrocarburo Chichibabin derivante dal TTM (TTM-TTM) mostrano un potenziale redox promettente per la ORR nelle batterie Li-O2. Le prestazioni elettrochimiche del TTH in una cella Li-O2 semisolida a flusso superano di quattro volte quelle del TTM, utilizzato come molecola modello. Di conseguenza, il nucleo TTH è stato accoppiato tramite sostituzione nucleofila aromatica con la piperidina per sviluppare un nuovo diradicaloide bifunzionale, chiamato PTTH. Questa nuova molecola è stata completamente caratterizzata e testata nell'impianto elettrochimico di Bettery S.r.l., dove ha mantenuto il suo effetto catalitico sulla ORR e raddoppiando le prestazioni del radicale TEMPO (utilizzato come molecola modello) nell'OER. Infine, è stato utilizzato un nuovo metodo di sintesi più efficiente per la preparazione del TTM-TTM, aprendo nuove prospettive nel design di ORMs bifunzionali basati su questo diradicaloide.
Nel Capitolo IV, è stato studiato un processo ethanosolv per il frazionamento della lignina, con l'obiettivo di ottenere un biopolimero elettroattivo. Questo materiale ha un grande potenziale come alternativa al carbon fossile nelle batterie Li-O2 semisolide a flusso o nei supercapacitori. In questo capitolo viene fornita una panoramica dei metodi di estrazione della lignina, evidenziando i vantaggi degli approcci lignin-first, che aiutano a preservare la struttura nativa del biopolimero. La lignina è stata estratta da scarti agroindustriali, come gusci di noce, mandorla e pistacchio, concentrandosi sugli effetti del pretrattamento tramite ball milling e dell'irradiazione a microonde sulla struttura e sulla resa della lignina estratta
Measurement of the ψ(2S) to J/ψ cross-section ratio as a function of centrality in PbPb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV
The ratio of prompt production cross-sections of ψ(2S) and J/ψ mesons in their dimuon final state is measured as a function of centrality, using data collected by the LHCb detector in PbPb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV, for the first time in the forward rapidity region. The measured ratio shows no dependence on the collision centrality, and is compared to the latest theory predictions and to the recent measurements in literature
Late outcomes of Viabahn self-expandable covered stent for the elective treatment of popliteal artery aneurysms
Objective: In the present study we aim to evaluate in detail the late outcomes of the overall endovascular cohort of the PARADE study, with a focus on factors that could influence such outcomes as these may provide useful insights for patients and clinicians alike. Methods: Between January 2010 and December 2023 patients with non-acute elective PAAs undergoing endovascular exclusion with the Viabahn stent-graft were included in a multicenter retrospective cohort study (40 sites from 10 countries). A cut-off of 15 procedures was used to define a participating center as "high-volume" (>15) or "low-volume" (<15). Results: During the 14-year studied period, 326 patients were treated who met inclusion criteria for the present study. Patients were predominantly male (304, 93.3%) with a mean age of 74.6 ± 9.2 years. Most of patients were asymptomatic (221, 67.8%), whilst 56 (17.2%) had intermittent claudication, and 49 (15%) CLTI. Acute technical success was not obtained in 2 cases (0.6%), due to residual type Ia endoleak (1 case), and residual type Ib endoleak (1 case), Of these, one patient received an open conversion, whereas the other one was followed up because unfit for any type of reintervention. At 30 days, 2 patients died with an overall 30-day mortality rate of 0.6%. Both were not cardiovascular deaths related to interventions. In addition, 30-day rates of MACE, graft occlusion, and procedure-related reinterventions were 1.2%, 3.7%, and 5.2%, respectively. No patient underwent early major amputation. The 5-year Kaplan-Meier estimates of primary patency, secondary patency, freedom from reinterventions(s), and amputation-free survival were 65.8% (95% CI: 61.7% to 71.9%), 84.9% (95% CI: 78.7% to 89.1%), 70.5% (95% CI: 66.2% to 74.8%), and 98.2% (95% CI: 96.4% to 99.6%), respectively. Amputation-free survival was adversely affected by active smoking (p = .011), chronic kidney disease (p < .001), poor run-off status (p = .042), and low number of cases for each center (<15) (p = .011). Multivariate analysis reported an approaching significance for active smoking (HR 3.460, 95% CI 2.6 to 6.1, p = .051), and confirmed the association with chronic kidney disease (HR 7.413, 95% CI 5.4 to 9.3, p = .006). Conclusion: The findings from this study show that endovascular repair using the Viabahn stent-graft may provide a feasible technical option for elective treatment of PAA. Some patient-related and procedure-related factors were identified, including chronic kidney disease, that were associated with higher rates of long-term complications
Enhancing Threshold Group Action Signature Schemes: Adaptive Security and Scalability Improvements
Designing post-quantum digital signatures is a very active research area at present, with several protocols being developed, based on a variety of mathematical assumptions. Many of these signatures schemes can be used as a basis to define more advanced schemes, such as ring or threshold signatures, where multiple parties are involved in the signing process. Unfortunately, the majority of these protocols only considers a static adversary, that must declare which parties to corrupt at the beginning of the execution. However, a stronger security notion can be achieved, namely security against adaptive adversaries, that can corrupt parties at any times. In this paper we tackle the challenges of designing a post-quantum adaptively secure threshold signature scheme: starting from the GRASS signature scheme, which is only static secure, we show that it is possible to turn it into an adaptive secure threshold signature that we call GRASS+. In particular, we introduce two variants of the classical GAIP problem and discuss their security. We prove that our protocol is adaptively secure in the Random Oracle Model, if the adversary corrupts only t2 parties. We are also able to prove that GRASS+ achieves full adaptive security, with a corruption threshold of t, in the Black Box Group Action Model with Random Oracle. Finally, we improve the performance of the scheme by exploiting a better secret sharing, inspired from the work of Desmedt, Di Crescenzo, and Burmester from ASIACRYPT’94
Augmenting Anonymized Data with AI: Exploring the Feasibility and Limitations of Large Language Models in Data Enrichment
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated advanced capabilities in both text generation and comprehension, and their application to data archives might facilitate the privatization of sensitive information about the data subjects. In fact, the information contained in data often includes sensitive and personally identifiable details. This data, if not safeguarded, may bring privacy risks in terms of both disclosure and identification. Furthermore, the application of anonymisation techniques, such as k-anonymity, can lead to a significant reduction in the amount of data within data sources, which may reduce the efficacy of predictive processes. In our study, we investigate the capabilities offered by LLMs to enrich anonymized data sources without affecting their anonymity. To this end, we designed new ad-hoc prompt template engineering strategies to perform anonymized Data Augmentation and assess the effectiveness of LLM-based approaches in providing anonymized data. To validate the anonymization guarantees provided by LLMs, we exploited the pyCanon library, designed to assess the values of the parameters associated with the most common privacy-preserving techniques via anonymization. Our experiments conducted on real-world datasets demonstrate that LLMs yield promising results for this goal
Clinical course and management challenges in Lafora disease: a narrative analysis in an Apulian cohort
Background: Lafora disease (LD) is an ultra-rare, autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of Lafora bodies in the brain, leading to drug-resistant epilepsy, myoclonus, progressive dementia, and cerebellar dysfunction. This retrospective study describes the clinical course and management challenges of LD in a cohort of patients from the Apulia region of Southern Italy, where the disease prevalence appears to be higher than in other populations. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical, electroencephalographic, and management data from six unrelated families with a confirmed diagnosis of LD, followed at the Neurology Unit of the Scientific Institute Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Hospital between 2010 and 2024. Demographic information, clinical presentation, treatment history, disease progression, and outcomes were collected. Results: Our analysis identified three distinct electroclinical stages: an initial Presenting Symptoms Stage with the onset of seizures and subsequent development of myoclonus; a Progressive Neurodegeneration Stage characterized by drug-resistant epilepsy, dementia, and ataxia; and a Terminal Stage marked by severe disability, frequent seizure emergencies, and medical complications. Management in the late stages proved particularly challenging, requiring a multidisciplinary approach to address refractory seizures, status epilepticus, and medical complications such as aspiration pneumonia and respiratory failure. Home-based care, with specialized team support, played a crucial role in minimizing hospitalizations. Discussion: Our findings underscore the importance of early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach in the management of LD. The late stages of the disease are characterized by significant clinical challenges necessitating close collaboration among neurologists, epileptologists, and other healthcare professionals, supported by effective home-based care. The apparent higher prevalence in Apulia warrants further investigation into potential genetic or environmental factors. Conclusion: This study highlights the significant clinical burden of LD and emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary management, particularly in the advanced stages. Home-based care supported by specialized teams and caregivers is essential for optimizing patient well-being. Further research is needed to identify early biomarkers and develop targeted therapies for this devastating condition
