The role of culture and gender in women entrepreneurs based on McClelland’s theory

    No full text
This study examines how cultural heritage and gender roles shape achievement motivation among 12 women entrepreneurs in the batik and songket industries in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu and Kota Bharu, Kelantan, East Coast Malaysia, using McClelland’s theory of needs as a conceptual framework. The study operationalizes the constructs of need for achievement (nAch), power (nPow), and affiliation (nAff) to analyze how family attitudes, socialization, inherited skills, and personal interests influence entrepreneurial motivation in heritage business contexts. A qualitative case study design was employed, with participants selected through purposive and snowball sampling from a population of 458 registered entrepreneurs. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically to identify patterns linking cultural and gender factors to motivational drives. Findings show that intrinsic achievement motivation (nAch) predominates over profit motives, while nAff and nPow are expressed through collaborative networks and leadership in business operations. The study’s original contribution lies in linking family heritage and gender roles with McClelland’s motivational constructs, providing a framework to support women-led heritage entrepreneurship and preserve Malaysia’s cultural crafts

Impact of Tower Grounding Resistance on Insulator Flashover Risk in 500 kV HVDC Transmission Systems under Lightning Strikes

    No full text
High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission lines are vulnerable to lightning strikes, which can greatly affect tower performance. This study utilizes PSCAD electromagnetic transient simulations to analyze the transient behavior of a 500 kV HVDC tower under two lightning strike scenarios: (a) shielding wire, and (b) phase conductor. Both scenarios investigated the influence of varying tower grounding resistance and its effect on insulator flashover risk. The model incorporates realistic parameters for shielding wires, tower conductors, insulators, and back flashover. Detailed evaluation of the transient response reveals that increasing grounding resistance leads to higher induced voltage across insulators for both scenarios, consequently elevating the risk of flashover events. Optimal lightning protection is achieved when tower grounding resistance is maintained between 80–100 Ω. These findings highlight the critical role of effective grounding for reliable HVDC operation during lightning events

    No full text
Tourism is a significant contributor to the economic growth of Sarawak. However, the sustainability in the long run depends on digital innovation, employee well-being and information sharing. This study examines the impact of digital platform utilisation (DPU) and employee well-being (EWB) towards sustainable work behavior (SWB) in Kuching, Sarawak with a focus on the mediating effect of information sharing (IS). Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) and Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) Model, the research uses a quantitative approach through 284 questionnaires filled by tourism employees. SPSS was used for regression and mediation analyses. The results show that DPU has a direct positive impact on SWB, and EWB does not affect directly to SWB while significantly intercedes IS which in turn contributes to sustainability impacts. IS completely mediates the relation between EWB and SWB, whereas it partially mediates DPU–SWB. It means that sustainable tourism is not simply an issue of leveraging the adoption of technology and employee well-being, but also strong information sharing to connect across organizational. The significance of this research lies in presenting theoretical contributions on the confirmation of IS as an influential mediator in tourism sustainability development and policy implications for Sarawak tourism stakeholder

THE NEXUS BETWEEN BOARD COMPOSITION AND FIRM PERFORMANCE: EVIDENCE FROM THE F4GBM INDEX

    No full text
This study examines the nexus between board composition and firm performance among companies listed under the FTSE4Good Bursa Malaysia (F4GBM) Index. A total of 116 F4GBM-listed companies were analyzed over a five-year period from 2019 to 2023 using panel data regression. Board composition was proxied by board size, board independence, and board gender diversity, while firm performance was measured by return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE). The empirical results indicate that none of the board composition variables have a statistically significant impact on firm performance. However, the control variables show significant effects—debt ratio negatively influences performance, while firm size exhibits a positive relationship. The insignificant findings suggest that, among Malaysian ESG-compliant firms, the influence of board structure on financial performance may be limited due to standardized governance practices and regulatory requirements under Bursa Malaysia’s corporate governance framework

    No full text
Introduction: Functional mitral regurgitation (Type I) could occur due to leaflet perforation or cleft. There are risks of functional mitral regurgitation might worsen to degenerative regurgitation and ultimately mitral valve failure. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), an in-silico method, is proven to have the capability of modeling blood flow in cardiovascular system, particularly in this case for regurgitation flow behaviour. Materials and Methods: This paper presented the application of computational fluid dynamics to evaluate the mitral regurgitation due to mitral valve leaflet perforation by simulating the hypertensive conditions and mitral valve perforation severities. Results: The results show that the amount of blood flow to the left atrium increased with the increased perforation severity and hypertension severity. The increase of perforation severity has caused the average reduction of blood flow percentage of up to approximately 8.01% for severe perforation. Conclusion: Hence, the more severe the hypertension and perforation, the more complications a person may experience. With more blood flow back to the left atrium, it may lead to several complications including hypoxemia and cyanosis
