Impact of Various Pre-Treatments on the Lignocellulosic Compositions of Sarawak ‘Paun’ Pineapple Leaf Waste

    No full text
Pre-treatment of lignocellulosic biomass is a crucial step in breaking down the complex structure of the plant`s cell wall to enhance the availability and digestibility of cellulose for bioconversion process of the biomass to value-added products. The overall efficiency of the process designed to convert lignocelluloses also lies on an accurate determination of compositions of the lignocellulosic substrate. In this study, local species of Sarawak ‘Paun’ pineapple leaves collected from Simunjan, Sarawak, were subjected to various pre-treatment methods including thermal treatment, acidic treatments and alkaline treatments. Compositional analyses of the raw and pre-treated leaves were conducted through a gravimetric method to study the effect of different methods of pretreatments in altering the lignocellulosic compositions of the pineapple leaf wastes focusing on the hemicellulose, lignin and cellulose content. As the main purpose of a pre-treatment method focuses on its ability and efficiency to disintegrate the biomass complex structure, especially, in reducing lignin content for higher cellulose accessibility of enzymes in enzymatic hydrolyses. This study suggested that pretreatment with 1.5% (v/v) hydrochloric acid solution displayed the most notable change to the lignocellulose contents of the leaves as highest cellulose content (51.5% w/w) and lowest amount of lignin (10.3% w/w) were recorded, compared to that of other pre-treatment methods. These findings may provide a better understanding for future research in designing a suitable biochemical process with enhanced enzymatic digestibility of cellulose present in the pineapple leaves to yield wealth-added products

Polymer nanocomposite membranes for pesticides removal

Pesticides are compounds, the definitions of which vary from nation to nation and change over time. They are made to be poisonous to some species but harmless to nontargeted organisms and ecosystems. Certain chemicals or mixtures, such as insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and pest-control agents, are used to prevent pests. Although they might be helpful in certain situations, pesticides can harm both humans and the environment. Pesticides are persistent and have a lengthy half-life in the environment. pesticides have been removed from water and wastewater using a range of physical, chemical, and biological methods. Adsorption, biosorption, reverse osmosis, ozonation, photocatalysis, membrane technology, and advanced oxidation process are all included in the discussed techniques

Between Day and Night : Deciphering the Nexus of Land Use and Property Crime in Malaysia’s Urban Territories

    No full text
Rapid urbanization in Malaysia has shaped a complex property crime landscape, especially in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. This study examines the relationship between urban land use and property crime (2015–2020) using spatial analysis, particularly Getis-Ord Gi* hot spot analysis. By categorizing 12 land use types and analyzing four daily timeframes, it identifies crime-prone areas and temporal trends. Findings highlight land use influences on crime distribution, emphasizing the need for data-driven urban planning and policing strategies. Despite relying on secondary data, the study underscores the necessity of primary data collection and broader comparisons to enhance crime prevention policies

The Influence of English-Speaking Anxiety on Learning Attitude of Chinese Non-English Major Undergraduates : Motivation as a Mediator.

    No full text
This study explores how English-speaking anxiety affects non-English major students' learning attitudes in China, highlighting motivation's mediating role. In China's higher education, English learning, especially oral skills, is crucial. However, English learning anxiety impacts students' attitudes towards spoken English. Employing standard measures and literature, multiple regression shows oral anxiety significantly shapes learning attitudes, with motivation as a key mediator. Despite the acknowledged importance of English oral proficiency in higher education, a substantial number of non-English major students in China continue to experience considerable levels of speaking anxiety. This anxiety adversely affects their willingness to engage in classroom oral activities and poses significant challenges to the cultivation of positive learning attitudes. Notably, the role of underlying motivational mechanisms in this context has received limited empirical attention within Chinese university settings. To address this gap, the present study employed a quantitative research approach using a survey design to collect data from undergraduate students. The final sample comprised 198 participants, including 49.49% male (n = 98) and 51.51% female (n = 100), all enrolled in non-English major programs at Chinese universities. The study discusses findings, gives anxiety-management suggestions, and notes limitations. It concludes that Chinese universities should consider students' attitudes to boost learning efficiency. Future research could examine more influencing factors, expand samples, conduct qualitative studies on different age groups, and use longitudinal methods

Optimizing ethanol gas sensor with rGO layer addition on LaFeO3–Pd doped material using density functional theory

    No full text
LaFeO3 is widely applied in ethanol gas sensors due to material composition and the stability of its sensing parameters. However, LaFeO3 is still limited in gas sensing properties, necessitating doping to enhance the performance of gas sensors like palladium (Pd). In this study, the optimization of the ethanol gas sensor was explored by adding reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to Pd–LaFeO3, focusing on adsorption energy and band gap energy using density functional theory (DFT) with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBEsol) simulation method. The results show that Pd–LaFeO3 adsorption energy of − 2.01 eV, which increases to − 2.29 eV with the addition of rGO, indicates stronger ethanol adsorption. The band gap of Pd–LaFeO3 was 2.34 eV before exposure to ethanol gas and decreased to 2.06 eV upon exposure. After incorporating rGO, the band gap further narrowed, from 0.11 eV before exposure to 0.05 eV after exposure. The narrowing of the energy band potentially enhances the sensor’s response. Those results indicate that adding rGO to Pd–LaFeO3 shows promising potential for ethanol gas sensor applications

The nexus between female unemployment and child abuse : the moderating role of inflation

    No full text
Child abuse has been a significant issue in Malaysia, with an escalating number of documented cases over the years. More than 2,000 children are reportedly abused each year in the region. Child abuse negatively impacts the community, as children who have been abused may struggle in school, have difficulty forming healthy relationships, and may be more likely to engage in criminal behaviour. This study investigates the nexus between child maltreatment and female unemployment in Malaysia, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) acting as a moderating variable. The employment of the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach enables the analysis to encompass the data on GDP per capita, CPI, child abuse cases, and female unemployment rates from 1989 to 2021. The findings reveal a strong correlation between inflation and child abuse cases, suggesting that rising living costs increase parental stress as families struggle to afford basic necessities. Additionally, higher female unemployment rates are associated with increased child abuse incidents, as financial instability and job insecurity create additional pressures on mothers. When women are unemployed and face economic hardship, they may experience emotional distress, heightening the risk of child maltreatment. Furthermore, divorce is also found to be a contributing factor to child abuse. These findings can be useful for policymakers. In particular, the government should implement policies that promote flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting or part-time employment, to help women better balance work and family responsibilities
