INTERNATIONALISATION STRATEGIES IN HIGHER EDUCATION: THE CASE OF LATVIA

    No full text
Context: The internationalisation of higher education institutions (HEIs) is a key strategy for fostering global collaboration and economic growth. Latvian universities have responded by adopting innovative approaches to attract international students and staff (Apsite-Berina et al., 2023). Historically advantaged by geography, linguistic diversity, and prestige during the Soviet era (Ozolina & Ulnicane-Ozolina, 2020), these benefits diminished with globalisation, prompting targeted reforms. Key measures included the 1995 Law on Institutions of Higher Education, aligning Latvian education with European standards (European Union, 2023), and joining the Bologna Process and Lisbon Recognition Convention to enhance student mobility and academic recognition (Council of Europe, 1997). Further initiatives, such as the National Development Plan 2014–2020, streamlined admissions, introduced European-language programs, and improved program quality. The region has entered into agreements with student recruitment agencies, which facilitate student mobility and improve Latvian universities' recruitment processes (Chankseliani, M.,Wells, A. 2019). In addition, the country has revised its academic program offerings to ensure compliance with the quality criteria outlined by the Ministry of Education and Science (Study in Latvia, 2022). Methodology: Building on a strategy already implemented in our previous work (Sospiro, P., et al., 2024), this case study examines the internationalization process of Latvian higher education institutions (HEIs). The analysis is based on data collected through a survey disseminated to all National Promotion Agencies (NPAs) in the EU. The survey aimed to provide an overview of the strategies and roles these agencies employ to boost the international outreach and partnerships of EU universities. In particular, the NPA Study in Latvia was among the first to respond, offering valuable information about its initiatives and practices. The methodological framework includes: (i) Policy and strategy analysis: Examines the strategies implemented to attract international students by the Agency. (ii) Quantitative analysis: A statistical evaluation of international student enrolment in Latvian universities. (iii) Case study approach: A detailed review of key universities with a higher number of international students, to explore best practices and their contributions to internationalisation. Results: This research provides insights into the key trends shaping the internationalisation process in Latvia, highlights the adopted by Latvian universities and the role of the Study in Latvia Agency on internationalisation process. Preliminary findings indicate that the majority of international students hosted by Latvian institutions originate from India (25%), Uzbekistan (12%), Sweden (8%), Ukraine (8%), Germany (7%), and Sri Lanka (6%). The prevalent fields of study include Social Sciences, Business and Law, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Information Technology, as well as Health Care and Social Welfare. This diversity highlights the broad academic appeal of Latvian higher education institutions in attracting students from varied educational and cultural backgrounds

The Role of the Functionalization of Biomedical Fabrics on Their Ability to Adsorb and Release Drugs

Biomedical cotton gauzes (C0), after a first functionalization with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) by a Fenton’s reaction (material C1), can be further modified in order to make them suitable for the adsorption and next release of drugs. Indeed, either after opening the epoxide ring through the addition of water (material C2) or after the introduction of amino groups through reaction with diamines (1,2-diaminoethane (material C3), 1,6-diaminohexane (material C4) and 1,12-diaminododecane (material C5)), the new gauzes can be uploaded with drugs. Both ibuprofen (IB), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, and amoxicillin (AM), a wide-spectrum β-lactam antibiotic, are efficiently adsorbed from their aqueous solutions at 20 °C onto C2–C5 (up to ≈0.8 mmol g−1 for IB and up to 0.4 mmol g−1 for AM) but not onto C0 and C1. The release of both IB and AM is affected by the ionic strength of the medium in which the release takes place. Indeed, kinetic experiments conducted with a physiological solution (NaCl (aq, 0.9% w/v) showed good release efficiencies while only modest or negligible release was observed if deionised water was the release medium. Moreover, the kind of functionalization plays an important role during both the adsorption and the release. The gauzes C3–C5 can be uploaded with a higher amount of drug relative to C2. Conversely, the drug is released quickly and in a higher amount from C2 relative to the gauzes containing the amino groups

Una ricerca empirica nei percorsi universitari in Scienze della comunicazione, tra approccio laboratoriale e attenzione all’occupabilità

    No full text

Strategic Value of Certifications in Manufacturing Companies: Analysis of the Leading Companies in the Marche Region

    No full text
Certifications play a crucial role in enhancing a company’s reputation across multiple dimensions as they verify compliance with established norms and standards in areas such as safety, quality, and sustainability. Nowadays, sustainability certifications are particularly impactful, guiding consumer choices toward environmentally friendly products and encouraging companies to improve continuously. Social certifications, emphasizing workers' rights, gender equality, and fair wages, further reinforce ethical and social responsibility. However, obtaining certifications involves significant investment, rigorous compliance, and addressing legal and bureaucratic requirements. In Italy, Accredia oversees the validity of system certification processes, ensuring alignment with international standards and fostering transparency and reliability in certified companies. This article aims to analyse the main companies in the Marche Region, as listed in the annual Fondazione Aristide Merloni’s ranking through the possession of certifications, with particular focus on four key sectors: Fashion, Agri-food, Furniture, Automation and Machineries. The research was conducted analysing companies websites and the Accredia database, looking for certifications and analysing the results to evidence the most achieved and the gaps between companies and sectors. It emerges that larger companies have a greater capacity to obtain system certifications and that the numbers are growing for sustainability certifications, while it is noted that smaller companies have a lower rate of adoption, being more influenced by financial and organisational obstacles

A Basic Search and Matching Model of the Housing Market (Chapter 2)

    No full text
Housing markets are “search markets” and, thus, some key insights of the search and matching model described in Chapter 1 can be used for analysing the homeownership and rental markets. Indeed, this chapter clearly shows that a basic housing market search and matching model can explain the main empirical facts of housing markets, viz.: the trade-off between housing price and time-on-the market, the positive correlation between housing price and trading volume (the number of contracts traded during a given period), and the phenomenon known as “housing price dispersion”
