Current trends and future directions in eye tracking technology: A literature review
In recent years, literature on eye tracking has seen a significant rise in interest. While previous approaches were often highly intrusive, modern solutions mostly rely on non-intrusive devices such as glasses, headsets, or table cameras. These systems are increasingly reliant on self-assessing eye tracking algorithms powered by advanced machine learning techniques, and for this reason it is fundamental to identify optimized approaches which can work with good performances and reduced computational times. This work serves as a complete review of the current state of the art in available equipment and algorithms, introducing a novel taxonomy of approaches, with a particular emphasis on machine learning and neural networks. Comparative tables of the reviewed studies will also be provided, with an in-depth analysis of the current best algorithms. Additionally, the work will explore the potential applications of eye tracking in everyday life, with a focus on the medical and psychological fields, highlighting its use for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A discussion of the current limitations will be provided to identify the shortcomings of state of the art in eye tracking and pinpoint the aspects which need improvements in future research. Finally, the discussion will address possible future advancements in eye tracking, particularly regarding datasets and algorithmic improvements, providing some directions

Active Breaks Enhance Complex Processing Speed, Math Performance, and Physical Activity in Primary School Children: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 12-week Active Breaks (ABs) program on physical, cognitive, and academic outcomes in primary school children. Methods: Eighty primary school students (age: 7.52 ± 0.50) (BMI: 18.35 ± 3.07) were recruited and randomly assigned to three experimental groups—involving creativity-based (CRE) (age: 7.97 ± 0.18 years) (BMI: 20.01 ± 3.59), fitness-based (FIT) (age: 7.93 ± 0.26 years) (BMI: 16.74 ± 1.76), and combined (COM) (age: 7.97 ± 0.18 years) (BMI: 19.38 ± 4.24) ABs—and a control group (CON) (age: 7.42 ± 0.49 years) (BMI: 18.31 ± 2.64). The intervention consisted of two daily sessions (10 min each) three times per week over a 12-week period. Numerical skills, calculation abilities, and arithmetic problem-solving performance were evaluated using the “Test for the Assessment of Calculation and Problem-Solving Skills” (AC-MT 6-11). Attention and concentration performance were assessed using the Reynolds Interference Task (RIT). Motor skill performance was assessed using the MOTORFIT tests. Results: The FIT and CRE groups showed higher improvement in physical performances (p < 0.05). Regarding cognitive outcomes, the COM group outperformed the CON group in the Total Correct Index (p = 0.032). Regarding mathematical performance, all EGs achieved higher results than the CON group (p < 0.042), with the COM group achieving the highest scores in operations, problem-solving, and total scores (p < 0.032). Conclusions: Incorporating structured physical activity through ABs during curricular hours is an effective strategy to enhance physical, cognitive, and academic performance in primary school children. A combined approach appears to be especially beneficial, supporting both physical and cognitive development simultaneously
Multifractal analysis of braided channel networks using structure functions and fixed-mass measures
This study presents a multifractal analysis of braided channel networks using a coupled approach that integrates structure functions and fixed-mass measures. The investigation focuses on three braided river systems (namely, Allaro River, Brahmaputra River and Rakaia River), examining the behavior of the number of wet channels measured along the longitudinal spatial development of the river reach. The number of wet channels is shown to be an intermittent 1D signal, whose physical scaling is governed by scaling laws that can be naturally described by multifractal measures. By employing this combined approach, we were able to identify the maximum order of the moments of the measures that characterizes the multifractal spectrum and multiscaling properties of braided channel systems. The methodology for estimating the multifractal spectra is based on a modified Legendre transform relation for singularity strengths, allowing for a quantitative comparison between the multifractal spectra derived from structure functions and those obtained using the fixed-mass method

Temporal perspectives, sensation-seeking, and cognitive distortions as predictors of adolescent gambling behavior: a study in Italian high schools
Background: Adolescent gambling is an emerging concern, with increasing accessibility through digital platforms. Psychological factors such as sensation-seeking, cognitive distortions, and time perspectives may contribute to gambling behavior during this developmental period. Aims. This study investigated the association between temporal perspectives and adolescent gambling, controlling for sensation-seeking and cognitive distortions. Methods: A total of 1,424 adolescents (Mage = 16.2 years, SD = 1.3) completed self-report measures assessing gambling behavior (PGSI), time perspectives (ZTPI), sensation-seeking (SSSA), and gambling-related cognitions (GBQ). Multiple regression and moderation analyses were conducted. Results: Present-hedonistic (β =.42, p <.001) and present-fatalistic (β =.17, p <.01) perspectives were significantly associated with both gambling frequency and severity, independent of sensation-seeking and cognitive distortions. Future orientation was inversely associated with gambling severity (β = –.19, p <.001). Moderation analyses indicated that the combination of high sensation-seeking and high present-hedonism amplified gambling risk. The model explained 32% of the variance in gambling severity. Conclusions: Temporal orientation plays a distinct role in adolescent gambling behavior beyond traditional dispositional and cognitive factors. Interventions should incorporate time-awareness strategies, helping adolescents shift toward future-oriented thinking while addressing sensation-seeking tendencies through targeted risk management and engagement in alternative rewarding activities
