    Artificial intelligence and the electrocardiogram: A modern renaissance

    : Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with electrocardiograms (ECG) represents a transformative shift in cardiovascular medicine, marking a modern renaissance of this traditional diagnostic technique. This article explores recent advancements in AI-enhanced ECG technologies, highlighting their potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, predict cardiovascular events, and enable personalized patient care. AI-driven ECG interpretation has demonstrated groundbreaking capabilities in the field of both structural and electrical heart diseases. Furthermore, deep learning techniques have expanded diagnostic capabilities by identifying subtle ECG patterns invisible to the human eye, improving the detection of several cardiac disorders. The increasing integration of AI-ECG into wearable technologies extends cardiac monitoring beyond conventional clinical settings, providing continuous, real-time health assessment. Despite these advancements, the widespread adoption of AI-ECG faces several challenges, such as the need for high-quality training data, ensuring algorithm generalizability across diverse populations, addressing bias in model training, and meeting critical regulatory and ethical standards. Moreover, concerns regarding explainability, physician deskilling, legal accountability, and the lack of high-quality studies proving improved patient outcomes remain key obstacles. By enhancing precision in detecting cardiovascular conditions and expanding access to proactive heart health monitoring, AI-enhanced ECG technology holds immense potential for reshaping cardiovascular diagnostics and management, always aiming at maintaining physician trust and patient safety

    Enterprises, nonprofit organizations, and policymakers increasingly integrate social and environmental concerns into their strategies, recognizing these as key competitive factors that are necessary even if present risks and opportunities but are necessary. This shift is driven by heightened awareness among their stakeholders, especially shareholder, workers and consumers who reward companies that balance economic value with positive societal impact. In Civil Economy, impact refers to the long-term sustainable change produced by an organization’s actions, whether positive or negative, for common good. Numerous impact assessment frameworks exist, especially in Italy, but selecting appropriate tools requires skill in analysing and managing created value. Traditional evaluation methods rely on varied principles and models; yet a lack remains for approaches based on Civil Economy principles.     Il working paper sviluppa una prima mappatura delle principali misure adottate da regioni ed enti locali per vincolare gli operatori economici, partecipanti alle procedure di gara per l’aggiudicazione di appalti e concessioni pubbliche, di riconoscere ai propri lavoratori un salario minimo orario non inferiore a 9 euro. Si tratta di una prima indagine esplorativa, che prova a sistematizzare in due macro-categorie gli interventi in questione, distinguendo le misure premiali da quelle prescrittive. La raccolta delle leggi regionali e delle delibere comunali è avvenuta nelle seguenti modalità: analisi dei comunicati stampa e dei siti web degli enti locali (albo pretorio online); monitoraggio dei social network e della rassegna stampa locale; segnalazione della documentazione da parte dei soci ADAPT e dei lettori del Bollettino ADAPT

    The General Attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS): validation and psychometric properties analysis in the Italian context

    This two-study investigation aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the General Attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS). In study 1 (N = 236 adults) confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to examine the factorial structure of the scale. Study 2 (N = 177) assessed the concurrent and predictive validity of GAAIS. Concurrent validity was examined by correlating positive and negative attitude scores toward AI with another measure of attitude toward AI. Predictive validity was assessed by measuring the predictive ability of attitude on intention to use AI. The findings support the two-factor model, including for this Italian version of the scale consistent with the original one (Study 1). Moreover, positive attitudes towards artificial intelligence, as measured by the GAAIS positive factor, were positively correlated with general attitudes towards the use of AI, while the negative factor showed a significant negative correlation with the same general attitudes (Study 2). Then, the Italian version of the GAAIS can be considered as a valid tool for assessing people orientations towards artificial intelligence in the context analyzed, confirming the relevance of studying attitudes and its measurement towards artificial intelligence in different cultural contexts. This measure which relates to a strong psychosocial perspective, may support future research to deepen the understanding of the factors influencing attitudes towards AI as well as to develop more effective communication and training program interventions, being this a very crucial topic in actual society

    The Mitochondrial Permeability Transition Pore in Platelets: Mechanisms, Physiological Roles, and Therapeutic Perspectives

    Platelets have long been known to be critically involved in hemostasis and thrombosis. However, platelets are also recognized as metabolically active cells that require well-regulated mitochondrial function to support their multiple functions in hemostasis, thrombosis, and inflammation. Mitochondrial activity has also recently been shown to play a crucial role in determining platelet activation, survival, and pro-inflammatory potential. A key nexus in these processes is the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP), a high-conductance channel in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Sustained mPTP opening triggers mitochondrial depolarization, the cessation of ATP synthesis, osmotic swelling, and, finally, platelet dysfunction or clearance. However, its transient opening might play physiological signaling roles. This review summarizes the current understanding of the molecular components and regulatory factors governing the platelet mPTP, explores its physiological and pathological relevance, and evaluates its potential as a therapeutic target in cardiovascular disease, inflammation, cancer, and potentially neurodegenerative diseases. We also highlight the ongoing challenges and crucial future directions in deciphering the complexities of platelet mitochondrial dynamics and mPTP functions

    Digital evolution and emerging inequalities in healthcare: a scoping review through the lens of knowledge management

    Background: The rapid diffusion of digital technologies throughout the healthcare system has created new opportunities to improve the use, efficiency and continuity of healthcare services. The academic debate has largely explored the implementation of digital tools and their impact on clinical processes and health outcomes. Despite the potential benefits, the digital evolution of the healthcare system could generate or aggravate existing inequalities. Although existing studies on digital technologies in healthcare are consolidated and numerous, little attention has been paid to the emergence of inequalities at individual, organisational and system levels. To fill this gap, this study aims to focus on how emerging inequalities are framed in the academic debate, with a focus on the socio-demographic, technological and organisational factors of digital evolution of the healthcare system. This study is based on a knowledge management perspective. Methods: This study uses a scoping review approach and is carried out following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The search was conducted without time limits on three databases, and only peer-reviewed articles in English were included. The review included qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods studies. Three analysis domains were identified: sociodemographic factors, technological factors and health and healthcare-related factors. A bibliometric and co-occurrence analysis was also conducted using VOSviewer to visualise the structure of the research landscape and identify thematic clusters. Results: From 3,303 reviewed articles, 64 studies met the inclusion criteria. The results highlight that the digital evolution of the healthcare system can exacerbate the exposure of new social categories to inequalities. The factors of emerging inequalities in the digital evolution of healthcare have been identified and classified into three areas: (1) socio-demographic factors, (2) technological factors and (3) organisational and systemic factors. Three different historical periods have been identified within the academic debate. In fact, through in-depth analysis and bibliometric analysis, we have observed an increasing diversification of the topics. Conclusion: Digitalisation of healthcare can generate inequalities. Although research on this topic in the literature is scarce, a growing number of scholars have begun to address it. Future research should explore user experiences, the effectiveness of healthcare provider training, coordination mechanisms and public reimbursement policies to reduce inequalities
