Measurement of Office Activities Using Non-Contact Ultrasonic Sensors and Accelerometer: Accuracy Comparison and Optimal Use Cases
Human Activity Recognition (HAR) plays a crucial role in optimizing indoor environmental conditions, improving occupant comfort, and enhancing energy efficiency in smart buildings. Various sensing technologies, including ultrasonic (US) sensors and accelerometers, are commonly used for HAR, each offering distinct advantages. US sensors provide non-intrusive monitoring while preserving privacy, whereas accelerometers enable personalized activity tracking but require user compliance. This study presents a comparative analysis of HAR performance using both technologies, focusing on their accuracy, reliability, and optimal application scenarios. The experimental setup included a US sensor and a accelerometer to capture movement patterns of office activities. A machine learning (ML) framework, combining Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), was implemented to classify activities. Results show that the hybrid SVM-CNN model achieved 99.3 % accuracy with US sensors and 97.0 % accuracy with accelerometers, demonstrating the effectiveness of ML techniques in HAR. Findings indicate that US sensors excel in differentiating fine-grained movements, making them ideal for Personalized Comfort Models (PCMs) and energy-efficient HVAC systems, while accelerometers are better suited for individual activity tracking. The study provides guidelines for optimal sensor deployment in indoor environments, contributing to the development of smart, adaptive buildings
Modelli relazionali di pericolo nei reati economici
La monografia offre un’analisi del modello di illecito di pericolo nell’ambito del diritto penale dell’economia, ponendo in evidenza le specificità di una tecnica incriminatrice cruciale nella tutela dei beni economici. Partendo dalla constatazione che la maggior parte degli interessi protetti sono qui di natura intangibile e superindividuale, l’opera evidenzia l’impiego esteso — e non privo di criticità — di paradigmi normativi basati sul pericolo. Il volume ricostruisce una pluralità di modelli astratti accomunati da uno schema relazionale che lega l’elemento del pericolo — riferibile ai diversi elementi di fattispecie — ad un evento dannoso futuro, la cui realizzazione non è tuttavia richiesta. Ne emerge un quadro in cui la categoria del pericolo si rivela lo strumento più idoneo, sotto il profilo dell’efficacia nella redazione delle figure di reato, a veicolare la protezione penale dei beni rilevanti per il funzionamento dell’economia contemporanea

Some of the Scholia metrica vetera on the text of Aristophanes report the existence of several possible colometric divisions of the same portion of text. This paper focuses on selected Scholia to Peace and Clouds and investigates whether the attested colometric alternatives should be considered as deriving from different editions of the same comic text or only one colometry is authentic, with the others resulting from mistakes in the manuscripts tradition or being proposed by Heliodorus in his own commentary

Early Hearing Interventions for Children with Hearing Loss in Africa: A 21-Year Scoping Review (2004–2025)
Background: The objectives of this scoping review were (a) to identify the most recent (in a
21-year span) literature information about hearing intervention programs in Africa and
(b) to provide data on the intervention practices, policies and the factors prohibiting the
larger diffusion of the hearing technologies in the African states. Methods: Queries were
conducted via the PubMed and Scopus databases for the time window from 2005 to 2025.
The mesh terms used were “hearing aids”, “cochlear implants”, and “hearing intervention
Africa”. Only research articles and review papers were considered as good candidates.
The standard English language filter was not used, so as to also identify information
from non-English-speaking scientific communities and groups. Results: Data from eight
papers were considered, reflecting the hearing intervention practices of six African states.
These reports, although integral in themselves, examine different aspects of children’s
hearing identification and grouping the information was not entirely feasible. It is assumed
that since there are no organized or centralized NHS programs in the African states, the
primary driver of hearing identification appears to be parental vigilance. The cochlear
implant intervention is not very diffused mainly due to complex economic factors of the
weak African economies. Anecdotal data refer to cultural bias versus hearing intervention
technology, but this information needs further elucidation. Conclusions: The information
on the African programs on hearing intervention policies is quite scarce, as in the case of
African NHS.Within this context, it is very important to convince audiologists and ENTs
from the African localized programs to publish their data in mainstream channels so that
new information can be assessed

L’idea di Medioevo2, nella vulgata comune che comprende media, personaggi
pubblici o politici e nelle chiacchierate di tutti i giorni, magari al bar, è molto spesso,
e a torto, identificato come i “secoli bui”, dove imperava lo Ius primae noctis e dove
superstizione, magia, malocchio, peste nera e la caccia alle streghe erano all’ordine
del giorno. Se poi, proviamo a leggere articoli di giornali o riviste che già dal titolo
identificano un aspetto negativo della nostra società, di qualsiasi tipo, dalla sanità
alla rete internet, inneggiare al “ritorno al Medioevo” è un passaggio analogico. Il
testo di Marco Brando, a nostro avviso, ha due punti di forza: la ricerca storica e
l'indagine sulla società odierna, attraverso la categoria conoscitiva del Medioevo,
utilizzato come metodologia di analisi e passando per gli stereotipi culturali, ci
presenta la realtà che viviamo con la lente dell’età di mezzo
Blue gentrification: Sustainably effective, socially regressive, or both? Impacts of coastal housing policies in Sardinia
Coastal management policies aim to curb the degradation of coastline-built environment, but at the risk of exacerbating gaps related to the housing access within local communities, in the context of the blue gentrification paradigm. This paper uses 2008–2023 panel data on real estate prices of residential buildings in Sardinia to evaluate the impact of the 2015 Nuovo Piano Casa (NPC) policy on housing costs, by means of event-study and difference-in-differences estimators. Results show that the policy proved to be socially regressive by increasing
housing costs in coastal municipalities, thus triggering the environmental (in)justice towards residents’ housing market in favour of foreign higher-spending tourism-led investments
Seeing the fours before the threes: investigating numerical signatures with hierarchical navon stimuli
When two numbers are compared, numerical processing signatures include the size effect (small numbers processed faster than large ones), the Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes (SNARC) effect (small numbers classified faster with left side than right side responses), and the distance effect (numbers farther from a reference processed faster than those closer). These signatures reflect single digit processing and their relevance for multi-digit processing relies on evidence from horizontal digit strings. In hierarchical displays, such as Navon stimuli, different information coexists at various spatial scales (local and global). Consequently, a single stimulus supports different processes depending on the attended scale. We examined number processing at two different spatial scales to investigate the influence of both the task relevant and irrelevant digits on processing signatures. We used hierarchical stimuli with symbolic numbers (1, 4, 6, 9) at global and local levels, such as a large “global” digit (e.g., 9) composed of smaller “local” digits (e.g., 1). Separate groups of participants classified either the global (N = 31) or local (N = 30) number magnitude relative to 5, ignoring the other scale. Consistent with Navon effects, we found faster processing for global than local stimuli and when global and local information matched. Both groups demonstrated significant SNARC and distance effects, but only the local group showed size effects. Notably, local numbers were classified faster even when the global number required the same response. Overall, these results indicate that numerical processing operates concurrently at different spatial scales, though local information is particularly vulnerable to interference from global context. This underscores the complex interplay between global and local processing in numerical cognition

Il capitolo ricostruisce la figura e il pensiero di Giuseppe De Lorenzo come anticipatore del dibattito sulle “due culture”, reso celebre da Charles Percy Snow nel 1959. Geologo e intellettuale poliedrico, De Lorenzo sviluppò una visione capace di coniugare scienza, filosofia e letteratura, trasformando la geologia in una “scienza filosofica” e intrecciando riflessione scientifica, sensibilità letteraria e ricerca spirituale. Attraverso l’analisi dei suoi scritti sul buddhismo, il contributo mostra come De Lorenzo abbia elaborato un modello unitario del sapere, in cui natura e spirito si rispecchianoThis chapter reconstructs the figure and thought of Giuseppe De Lorenzo as a forerunner of the debate on the “two cultures”, made famous by Charles Percy Snow in 1959.
