Effect of Trading Frictions on the House Price (Chapter 3)
Starting from the model developed in Chapter 2, this chapter shows the quantitative effect of search and matching frictions on the house prices estimate. After identifying a frictionless housing market and using two items of housing market data (namely, the expected time-on-the-market, and the average number of trades), the chapter estimates the matching opportunities for both buyers and sellers that, in turn, crucially affect the housing prices. Generative AI for Islamic Texts: The EMAN Framework for Mitigating GPT Hallucinations
Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have facilitated specialized applications in fields such as religious studies. Customized AI models, developed using tools like GPT Builder to source information from authoritative collections such as Sahih al-Bukhari or the Qur’an, were explored as potential solutions to address inquiries related to Islamic teachings. However, initial evaluations highlighted significant limitations, including hallucinations and reference inaccuracies, which undermined their reliability for handling sensitive religious content. To address these limitations, this study proposes EMAN (Embedding Methodology for Authentic Narrations), a novel framework designed to enhance adherence to Sahih al-Bukhari through API-based integration. Three methodologies are examined within this framework: Zero-Shot Instructions, which guide the model without prior examples; Few-Shot Learning, which fine-tunes the model using a limited set of examples; and Embedding-Based Integration, which grounds the model directly in a verified Ahadith database. Results demonstrate that Embedding-Based Integration significantly improves performance by anchoring outputs in a structured knowledge base, reducing hallucination rates, and increasing accuracy. The success of this approach underscores its potential for enhancing LLM performance in precision-critical domains. This research provides a foundation for the ethical and accurate deployment of AI in religious studies, emphasizing accountability and fidelity to source material

Among the dimensions of sermon manuscripts: the case of Bernardino da Feltre
This PHD thesis focuses on the study of a specific type of medieval book, the sermonaries, which contains the textual content of medieval preaching, and were considered reference mass communication instruments. The case study analyzes the manuscript witnesses of the Bernardino da Feltre sermons (born Martino Tomitano, 1439-1494), which was a famous preacher belonging to the Franciscan Observance. Since the early 20th century, only three printed sermons and a booklet on Confession are still available; this represents a limited legacy compared to his fame, with 3,600 sermons attributed to him by the epitaph in the San Giacomo church in Pavia, where he is now buried.
A turning point in studies on Bernardino occurred in 1937, when Father Carlo Varischi discovered 120 of his sermons. These manuscripts, written using a mix of Latin and vernacular, are preserved in the archives of Milan, APCL, A 17 and A 18. Varischi also published an important three-volume edition of these collection of sermons in 1964, which has become the subject of numerous studies focusing on their content and linguistic style.
This thesis, however, is concerned on the detailed analysis of another manuscript, APCL, A 13, also discovered by Varischi, even if it remained unpublished and largely overlooked until recently. This manuscript contains 31 sermons by Bernardino, which have their counterparts in A 17 and A 18. Despite this, the manuscript A 13 was surprisingly neglected by scholars until a few years ago.
The research highlights the connection between the material codex structure, seen as a physical medium of transmission, and its content. It also examines the main production dynamics and circulation of these books, which were part of a specific dissemination network. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter reviews the bibliographic literature on Bernardino da Feltre, focusing on the current state of research and the relevant sources on his life and preaching. The second and third chapters provide a detailed description of manuscript A 13 and analyze the methods and purposes behind its compilation. The fourth chapter explores the different types of sermonaries associated with Bernardino’s texts, and offers a comparative study of the multiple versions of the same sermon preserved across different manuscripts.
Eventually, the thesis also includes two appendices. The first appendix presents a transcription of a sermon from manuscript A 13 that has no counterparts in other known sermons but could be attributed to Bernardino. The second appendix contains descriptive records of the known manuscript witnesses of Bernardino, which date from the late 15th century to the first half of the 16th century. Gli interventi manoscritti sul Luculentum Theatrum Musicum: il caso delle sentenze latine e greche dell’esemplare viennese
This paper takes into consideration the lute anthology Luculentum Theatrum Musicum (1568) as an example of a hand-annotated book. Besides an overview of the main characteristics of the few exemplars available today, I focus on the Latin and Greek sentences written down by an anonymous hand from the 16th-17th century on the exemplar currently kept in Vienna, identifying the passages ascribed to different ancient authors, reconstructing the writing methods and possible sources used, finally offering a transcription of the sentences with apparatus, translation and notes

Caspase inhibition restores collagen Iα1 and fibronectin release in cigarette smoke extract-exposed human lung fibroblasts
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease characterized by obstructed airflow, airway remodeling, and inflammation, with cigarette smoke (CS) exposure being the main risk factor. Although CS extract (CSE) has been shown to activate caspases in various cell types, the role of caspases in human lung fibroblasts (hLFs) in COPD remains poorly understood. Recent studies have linked caspases to extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling in skin and kidney fibrosis. Caspase activation can be triggered by oxidative stress, with active caspase-3 executing the pore-forming protein gasdermin E (GSDME) in the cleaved N-terminal form GSDME-NT. We investigated whether CSE activates caspases and GSDME in hLFs and their role in ECM remodeling. MRC-5 lung fibroblasts were treated with CSE with or without the antioxidant N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and the caspase-8 inhibitor z-IETD-fmk. We measured the effects on caspase-1-8-3/7 activation, GSDME cleavage, ECM remodeling (procollagen Ia1, COLIa1, and fibronectin, FN), and mitochondrial superoxide (mSOX) generation. Key findings were validated in patient-derived hLFs (phLFs). Our results showed that CSE induced caspase-1-8-3/7 activation, mSOX generation, and decreased COLIa1 and FN levels in MRC-5. CSE caused caspase-8-dependent activation of caspase-3, leading to GSDME cleavage. Treatment with NAC inhibited mSOX and caspase activation. Inhibition of caspase-8 and mSOX restored FN and COLIa1 levels. In phLFs, we confirmed caspase-1 and -8 activation, mSOX increase, COLIa1/ FN decrease, and the effects of NAC. Our findings highlight the role of the axis caspase-8-3/7-GSDME and mSOX in regulating ECM protein, suggesting that these pathways may contribute to remodeling in COPD
