    On renewable energy community implementation in historic cities: A city-scale validated model

    Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) have emerged as a key strategy for transforming global energy management, promoting renewable energy generation and sharing, particularly through building-integrated photovoltaic (PV) systems. This innovative study focuses on designing a REC that facilitates renewable energy sharing between suburbs and historic city centers, where renewables installation is often constrained. Using city-scale energy simulations for the city of Perugia, Italy, the study evaluates electricity demand and potential PV production in two zones – northern and southern – each served by a unique primary energy station. Results revealed that multi-family houses in historic areas were the main contributors to overall electricity demand, while large offices had the highest average monthly consumption, particularly in summer. In the PV production analysis, increasing roof coverage to 70% significantly increased energy generation, with single-family houses in the northern zone producing up to 4 kWh more, daily, compared to 30% coverage. Mixed-use REC configurations (residential and commercial) achieved an optimal balance between self-sufficiency and energy exported to the grid, with average monthly shared energy reaching 32.4 kWh and 61.5 kWh in northern and southern areas, respectively. This study significantly contributes to demonstrating the feasibility of using suburbs-generated renewable energy to support energy innovation of historic city centers where restrictions on renewables installation are common. Findings underscore the potential for scalable, replicable REC models across other historic cities with similar constraints, but different climates and regulations. Such insights offer a pioneering model that bridges the gap between energy efficiency and heritage conservation in urban planning

    The impact of energy transition policies on real estate efficiency and renewable energy communities (RECs): An analysis of public awareness and final energy uses in Italy

    The Green Deal seeks to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, positioning building operations and renewables promotion as a critical focus areas. Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) have emerged as a key driver of this transformation. In Italy, several policies have been introduced to promote their development; however, their impacts remain underexplored. This study examines the efficiency of real estate, the proliferation of RECs, and public perceptions related to these initiatives through a survey distributed at national level achieving 149 respondents. Findings reveal that 58 % of assessed buildings had undergone retrofit interventions, predominantly aimed at reducing energy bills. Furthermore, 46 % of respondents acknowledged the essential role of incentives in driving these changes, while 73 % of users reported modifications to their energy behaviours. Overall, occupants of retrofitted buildings and RECs participants demonstrated greater awareness of energy topics. These results underscore the critical importance of policy incentives in accelerating the energy transition and stress the need for targeted communication campaigns to enhance public awareness and engagement, so achieving the broader goal of carbon neutrality

    Spectral emissivity measurement for high-temperature applications: a systematic review

    Measuring emissivity is pivotal for obtaining reliable high-temperature measurements through non-contact techniques such as pyrometry and thermal imaging. The interest in characterizing materials in terms of their radiant properties has increased in recent years due to the expanded application fields of these techniques, ranging from the process industry to aerospace and the energy industry. Various methods are available in the literature to assess material emissivity, but they are primarily classified into indirect and direct methods. This review also addresses different types of materials, various experimental conditions (e.g., heating technologies and measurement frequency bands), and different types of measurement outputs. The aim of this review paper is therefore to systematically examine the literature available on the topic, highlighting the pros and cons of the different methodologies used for measuring emissivity at temperatures up to 2500 °C

    Exploring justice perceptions in online banking recovery: gender moderation and behavioral outcomes

    The study addresses the recovery from service failures in online banking. It focuses on the three dimensions of perceived recovery justice – namely, distributive justice (DJ), procedural justice (PJ), and interactional justice (IJ) – and investigates their impact on post-recovery satisfaction (PRS), the moderating effect of gender, and further, the influences of PRS on customer trust (CT), affective commitment (AFFC), and customers’ behavioral intentions (CBI). The study uses partial least squares structural equation modelling to examine the data collected in Egypt from 445 respondents who experienced a service failure with online banking. The results show that the three dimensions of perceived recovery justice – DJ, PJ, IJ – exert positive influences on PRS, and gender moderates the effects of PJ and IJ on PRS: procedural justice makes women exhibit higher levels of PRS. In contrast, interactional justice makes men encounter higher levels of PRS. The results also show that PRS positively influences CBI through its direct and indirect effects (via CT and AFFC). Furthermore, PRS mediates the positive effects of DJ, PJ, and IJ on customers’ behavioral intentions. The study outcomes have significant theoretical and practical implications for online banking

    Integration of multiple energy systems for the valorisation of the residual municipal solid waste: a modelling study

    Integrating performant waste-to-energy solutions in composting facilities is essential to mitigate the pressure of increasing amounts of residual municipal solid waste. Hence, this paper investigates the integration of residual municipal solid waste gasification with a bottoming organic Rankine cycle (ORC) unit, a biomass pyrolysis reactor and a wastewater treatment plant from an energy point of view. Two layouts are compared to evaluate the system's flexibility in a district cooling and heating network with varying load demand. Results: The analyses show that pyrolysis can reduce the ORC partialisation and obtain a bio-crude oil annual production in the range of 9617 t⋅y−1 – 12718 t⋅y−1. When the wastewater treatment is decoupled from the ORC condenser (second layout), it is possible to treat all 16000 t⋅y−1 of wastewater produced. On the contrary, in the first layout, the amount of wastewater treated is affected by the ORC working fluid. Toluene (9391 t⋅y−1) treats more wastewater than cyclopentane (8762 t⋅y−1) since the operability of the treatment line is extended by 275 h. In both layouts, the electricity production is higher with toluene, ranging between 341 and 5185 kWe. However, the highest natural gas savings, 1783990 m3⋅y−1, is obtained with cyclopentane
