    Vibrational Monitoring of a Concrete Beam for Bridge Damage Detection: Data Fusion Between Contact and Non-Contact Techniques

    Non-destructive techniques are fundamental to evaluate the structural health of structures and infrastructures; they include both inspection and monitoring techniques, with or without contact. This paper presents the results of laboratory mechanical and vibrational tests carried out on Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECCs) in the framework of the MULTICLIMACT (MULTI-faceted CLIMate adaptation ACTions to improve resilience, preparedness and responsiveness of the built environment against multiple hazards at multiple scales) project (GA n. 101123538). A release test at different load levels was performed to analyse the behaviour of a beam in free vibration oscillations. The formation of cracks causes the decrease of material stiffness which can be highlighted by vibrational monitoring of the beam. Non-contact techniques can also be exploited for example vision-based acquisition systems: processing the data with the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique enables the full-field extraction of the strain field, providing information in some points of the structure where contact sensors are not located. Hence, this can also be considered a soft sensing technique. However, vision-based techniques are often limited in resolution, which depends upon the speckle applied on the specimen for DIC, thus correlation with contact techniques is needed to achieve greater robustness and accuracy

    Correlation of Body Parameters and Age with Foot Arch Index and Stabilometric Variables in Physically Active Young Males and Females

    : Postural stability is influenced by several anthropometric factors as well as age. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between body height, body mass, BMI, and arch index with stabilometric parameters in physically active young adults. A total of 169 sport science university students participated in the study. Their arch index and their stabilometric parameters were measured using the P-Walk BTS platform. Spearman's rank correlations showed a significant positive correlation between body mass and arch index (r = 0.25, p = 0.001), and BMI and arch index (r = 0.30, p < 0.001). Also, negative correlations were observed between body height and CoP speed (r = -0.22, p = 0.004) and CoP distance (r = -0.23, p = 0.003), as well as body weight and CoP speed (r = -0.17, p = 0.028) and CoP distance (r = -0.19, p = 0.015). Age was negatively correlated to postural sway variables (i.e., CoP distance, CoP area, and CoP speed). The findings suggest that, in physically active people, larger anthropometric values may confer stabilizing advantages, potentially due to increased body volume. Also, the significant correlation of age to stability metrics may highlight enhanced proprioceptive integration or adaptive neural mechanisms. The results highlight the importance of individualised proprioceptive training programmes, particularly for athletes of lower body mass or stature. Future research should extend on the results' potential training and rehabilitative implications

    Il contributo analizza la relazione tra lavoro agile, spazio domestico e identità femminile attraverso un’analisi comparata di The Last Samurai di Helen DeWitt (2000) e Negative Space di Gillian Linden (2024). Entrambi i romanzi pongono al centro della narrazione la figura di una madre che svolge un lavoro cognitivo precario e deve gestire simultaneamente la sfera professionale e il lavoro invisibile di cura all’interno dello spazio domestico. Se in The Last Samurai questa condizione diventa occasione per un progetto di emancipazione intellettuale, alternativo alle logiche della produttività neoliberale, in Negative Space, ambientato nel periodo successivo al lockdown, si traduce in ansia e perdita di orientament

    An improved bilevel programming approach for assortment and cut of defective stocks

    We consider the problem of simultaneously (a) finding a limited assortment of stock items and (b) cutting them with minimum trim loss to fulfill a known demand of different parts. We develop a framework to address the problem when stock sheets can be affected by faults, providing and testing a new bilevel model for both defect occurrence and robust optimization of the production process. The model generalizes an existing bilevel approach and overcomes some of its drawbacks, returning more credible scenarios in terms of defect distributions

    Il contributo propone una lettura trasversale dei saggi raccolti nel volume, mettendo in luce i principali elementi di convergenza tematica e le specificità metodologiche che li caratterizzano. L’analisi comparata evidenzia come, pur nella pluralità di approcci e prospettive, i contributi riconoscano la formazione iniziale degli insegnanti come un processo articolato, in cui riferimenti teorici e pratiche situate si alimentano reciprocamente. Riprendendo la cornice introduttiva del volume, il saggio invita inoltre a riflettere sulla formazione iniziale degli insegnanti come concreta opportunità di costruzione e consolidamento dell’identità professionale. Richiamando l’attenzione sulle evidenze emerse dai diversi studi presentati, l’interesse è anche quello di evidenziare elementi di qualità, criticità e prospettive di miglioramento su cui appare importante continuare a lavorare. Considerando l’interesse crescente che suscita l’applicazione dei processi di analisi dei dati nei contesti educativi e formativi, verranno proposte ulteriori ipotesi di sviluppo volte ad integrare l’offerta formativa dei percorsi di formazione docenti con metodologie e strumenti basati su AI, sia per il supporto della progettazione didattica sia per il potenziamento delle attività di ricerca

    Extending the dynamic and dependent tree theory (D2T2) to safety barriers: An application to an offshore fire deluge system

    Fault Tree (FT) Analysis is still one of the most common approaches for conducting reliability analysis of complex systems. However, it conceals several limitations such as the assumption of independent events and inability to model modern maintenance strategies in its basic form. To enhance FT analysis and overcome these limitations, Dynamic and Dependent Tree Theory, D2T2, has been recently introduced. This algorithm is based on the integration of Petri Nets, Markov models, and Binary Decision Diagram with the FT. Despite its effectiveness, its generalizability for different case studies needs to be explored. This is especially true for the application to safety barriers, which spend most of their time in a standby state. Thus, this paper aims to provide an extension of the D2T2 approach to further prove its capabilities and adopt it for safety barriers. To this end, the framework is applied to an offshore fire deluge system considering an availability analysis and a reliability analysis for the standby and operational phase respectively. The proposed modified framework could be used by maintenance engineers and managers to conduct reliability analysis of safety barriers, along with testing multiple maintenance strategies for their components
