Auden. To become the great English composer he became, Britten needed to have been impacted by these different relationships. Without Wystan H. Auden’s influence on and collaboration with Benjamin Britten, the composer would not have developed as deep an appreciation for poetry within music and an awareness of the challenges of text setting. Grandpa Mike
Get PDFGrandpa Mike is an etched print made in remembrance of my grandpa, who passed when I was five years old. Much of my life was influenced by him, even his death played a formative part in my memories and who I am as a person. Each of the items portrayed in this picture have significance in my life and a story that has been told over and over by my family. The fishing rod, hooks, hat, and tackle box represent my memories of fishing with my grandpa, the nest with eggs is something that the two of us used to go look at, and the milk carton represents the times when my grandpa would let my drink milk straight from the carton, which my mom really didn’t approve of. This piece creates a connection with the viewer and challenges them to identify their own past experiences. The particular experiences and items in this piece are very individualistic to me but the ideas behind them are universal. Each of us has someone in our life that is very important to us and has given us great memories, and some of us have even lost those people. By holding on to the memories and things that remind us of that person, it is almost like it keeps a part of them alive and with us

Monolingual Attitudes Toward Bilingual Picture Books: A Comparative Case Study of American College Students
Get PDFGiven that 22% of Americans do not exclusively speak English at home, it is important for educators to be informed about bilingual resources. Picture books have long been researched by those in the education profession, but little research has been conducted on bilingual picture books and the attitudes toward them. This case study addresses that research gap. To do so, the researcher collected a sample of picture books (half bilingual and half monolingual) from the Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) of a university in the Midwestern US and questionnaire responses from five monolingual undergraduate students to compare the attitudes of education and non-education students toward bilingual picture books. This case study revealed that while education students’ attitudes toward bilingual picture books were more nuanced than non-education students, all students with limited exposure to bilingualism indicated hesitation and a lack of awareness concerning the uses and effects of bilingual books regardless of their major. These findings reflect preexisting literature, suggesting that educators and education students need more exposure to bilingual resources in order to effectively teach the growing number of minority language speakers in their classrooms and that conversely, educators who have seen the benefits of bilingual resources are more prepared to teach in such environments

One of the leading causes mortality in cancer patients is microbial infection. Adhering well to evidence-based guidelines improves both cost outcomes for healthcare systems and health outcomes for patients. Current guidelines available today: NCCN, AGIHO/DGHO, MASCC/ISOO, ACS, and ASCO/IDSA.
OBJECTIVE 1: To assess prescriber adherence to antimicrobial guidelines in low- to medium-risk patients with cancer. ● Null Hypothesis of Objective 1: Prescribers are adherent to antimicrobial prophylaxis guidelines (greater than 80% prescribing practices). ● Alternative Hypothesis of Objective 1: Prescribers are not adherent to antimicrobial prophylaxis guidelines (less than or equal to 80% prescribing practices).
OBJECTIVE 2: To assess the incidence of microbial infections in low- to medium-risk patients with cancer. ● Null Hypothesis of Objective 2: There is not an increased incidence of infections in low- to medium-risk patients with cancer who did not receive antimicrobial prophylaxis compared to those who did. ● Alternative Hypothesis of Objective 2: There is an increased incidence of infections in low- to medium-risk patients with cancer who did not receive antimicrobial prophylaxis compared to those who did.
A retrospective chart analysis was utilized to assess infection prophylaxis in low- to medium- risk cancer patients at Kettering Health Cancer Center following IRB approval. Patients’ charts were reviewed from the electronic medical record to assess prescriber adherence to prophylaxis guidelines as well as incidence of infection in the patient
Fibers of Memory: Exploring Culture, Relationships, and History Through Art
Get PDFThis will be an Artist Talk, a practice common for full-time artists. I hope to share my personal artist practice and share with others how I have used quilting, ceramics, and painting to explore many facets of life. As an artist, I’m interested in what happens when objects are taken out of a familiar context and reimagined, in objects as containers for memories of relationships, history, and culture. I explore this by uniting found and made objects, painting onto family quilts, and finishing ceramics by weaving personal materials throughout. I do this across all mediums, repeating patterns reminiscent of my past, curving lines, floral imagery, cursive handwriting, things we all once shared. I memorialize seemingly trivial things by giving them a permanent armor or resting place. This results in a blend of functional and sculptural ceramics. My family and history have been consistent themes throughout my undergraduate career. I have worked to better know my family members by creating pieces with their input, imagery of our lives together, and our shared experiences. A sense of home and community is often created through warm colors, organic shapes, weaving, braiding, and visual hierarchy. These help me to convey the idea of being in relationship with others, or family
The Relationship between Humor and Disability
Get PDFSelf deprecating jokes have become the norm in modern day society. We often find this form of humor is able to alleviate stressful situations, cut through the tension, and even build relationships. This paper will discuss the phenomenon of using self-defeating jokes about one\u27s physical disability in order to appease others. This research aims to reveal the consequences and the dangers of the overuse of jokes that violate one\u27s psychological safety. First, we will elaborate on the causes of what drives someone to make self-defeating jokes. Through a personal account, multiple academic journals, and humor this paper will review the effects of the disabled communities perceives responsibility to put those around them at ease with their disability. Finally, the paper will elaborate the solutions to these false expectations on the disabled community
