Duet in B
This duet was written by someone very special to me. When I asked Anthony if he wanted to play a
duet with me at my recital, he enthusiastically asked, “What if I wrote one?” I immediately said yes,
and sure enough, he wrote this duet for us over the summer. I am very thankful that Anthony
wrote this duet for my recital, and I am grateful for the opportunity to perform with him today.
Please enjoy this special piece written by a special person.
Monsters, Inc. Theme 
Monsters, Inc. is a Pixar movie that was released in 2001. This movie was very popular and remains
so today. The main theme from the movie is iconic and has been used all over Instagram, Facebook,
and YouTube. When I found an arrangement for this jazzy piece online, I knew that I wanted to
perform it for my senior recital. I would like to thank Anthony, Samuel, Graci, and Isaac for their
willingness to play this with me. We have had such a fun time working on it together, and we hope
that you enjoy it! 
Trombumba
Trombumba is a trombone quartet written in 1974 that has a catchy melody that gets passed
between all four voices. This arrangement was written in 2018 and has a Latin, cha-cha feel to it. I
loved this arrangement as soon as I heard it. This quartet has been technically challenging due to
passing solo lines back and forth, the dynamic contrasts, and syncopated rhythms. Working on this
trombone quartet with my friends has been a joy. We have all enjoyed playing this together, to the
point where we would dance as we rehearsed! I am grateful to close my senior recital with the help
of my friends.

Program Notes
Trombone Concerto in B  Major
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Trombone Concerto in B  Major is considered part of standard trombone
repertoire. This was the first solo trombone work that I had ever worked on in high school. I
decided to open my recital with this piece because I played it for my audition to get into Cedarville’s
music program. This movement is how I started my musical career at Cedarville, so I found it
appropriate to perform it my final year at my senior recital. I remember how challenging it was for
me in high school; reading this movement again has shown me how much I have grown musically
over my time at Cedarville University. I am grateful to all of my music professors and all that they
have taught me, especially Professor David Roode, Dr. Chet Jenkins, and Dr. Tony Weikel. 
Nocturno
A nocturne is a piece that evokes feelings of the night; they are typically dreamy, romantic, and
legato. This Nocturno is a beautiful and lyrical work in ABA form that was written for french horn
and piano. The piece is quite expressive and romantic. The flowing lines of the piano
complement the lyricism and beauty of the melody. Strauss’s style was heavily influenced by
Mozart, Schubert, Haydn, and Beethoven. As a composer, he was a virtuosic horn player who
emphasized tone quality over everything. Nocturno, Op. 7 was one of several pieces that Strauss
wrote for himself to perform throughout his career. I chose to perform this trombone arrangement
of Strauss’s Nocturno because of its beauty, expressivity, and lyricism. 
Romance
Carl Maria von Weber was a German composer of the Romantic period. His Romance is considered
one of the most popular pieces in trombone repertoire. The piece embodies the characteristics of
Romantic music, such as expressivity, lyricism, extended range, rubato, and dynamic contrasts. I
have enjoyed working on this piece because it has allowed me to show expression through music. 
Trombone Concerto
Launy Grøndahl was a Danish composer, conductor, and violinist. This composer is primarily known
for two accomplishments. First, he was the conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra
for 31 years. Second, he wrote his Trombone Concerto in 1924. The piece was inspired by
Copenhagen’s Casino Theater Orchestra trombone section, which had a high standard of playing.
This orchestra is where Grøndahl played violin starting when he was 13 years old.
The first movement is highly dramatic. The main themes switch from bold to lyrical. The second
movement is played “in the manner of a tall tale” and is written in mixed meter. The movement is
centered around two differing themes. These themes evoke feelings of sorrow, with a reminiscent
and optimistic theme interspersed. The third movement is a light rondo. The melody is playful and
light, filled with staccato runs. This Trombone Concerto is a beautiful piece. One unique aspect of
this concerto is that Grøndahl notates heavily, meaning he places articulation marks on almost
every single note. This is a challenge because the performer must find a balance between artistic
interpretation and expression while also honoring Grøndahl’s intended performance. Overall, this
expressive piece has been challenging, yet rewarding. Please enjoy Launy Grøndahl’s Trombone
Concerto. 
What a Wonderful World
At the end of this summer, I lost my only grandma. I was blessed to have spent 21 years of my life
with her. She was always one of my biggest support systems. My grandma loved music. Her favorite
song was Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World. She always loved to hear my sister and I
make music together. She would watch clips from my junior recital on her iPad almost every day.
Today, my sister and I would like to honor the memory of our amazing grandma, Betty Greenlee,
with What a Wonderful World.
