Soft-Decoding Reverse Reconciliation in Discrete-Modulation CV-QKD
In continuous-variable quantum key distribution, information reconciliation
is required to extract a shared secret key from correlated random variables
obtained through the quantum channel. Reverse reconciliation (RR) is generally
preferred, since the eavesdropper has less information about Bob's measurements
than about Alice's transmitted symbols. When discrete modulation formats are
employed, however, soft information is available only at Bob's side, while
Alice has access only to hard information (her transmitted sequence). This
forces her to rely on hard-decision decoding to recover Bob's key.
In this work, we introduce a novel RR technique for PAM (and QAM) in which
Bob discloses a carefully designed soft metric to help Alice recover Bob's key,
while leaking no additional information about the key to an eavesdropper. We
assess the performance of the proposed technique in terms of achievable secret
key rate (SKR) and its bounds, showing that the achievable SKR closely
approaches the upper bound, with a significant gain over hard-decision RR.
Finally, we implement the scheme at the coded level using binary LDPC codes
with belief-propagation decoding, assess its bit-error rate through numerical
simulations, compare the observed gain with theoretical predictions from the
achievable SKR, and discuss the residual gap

Exploring the nexus between appropriability and productivity in highly innovative and globalised companies
This paper identifies the dichotomous role (bright and dark sides) of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection on labor productivity among highly innovative globalised firms. The role of appropriability conditions—such as IPR protection—as “Schumpeterian” incentive to innovation has been largely explored in the empirical literature. In this paper, we contribute to this strand explore the role of appropriability conditions on firm labor productivity under different configurations of R&D activities in highly globalized companies. In line with the literature, we show that labor, capital and R&D investments lead to productivity gains, and that the strength of the patent system the firm is embedded into is positively linked to the firm’s labor productivity too. We call this the ‘bright side’ of IPR. However, stronger intellectual property rights might have a detrimental effect on the R&D returns, which appear to be maximized around the median level of IPR protection. In other words, too much protection might actually reduce R&D returns, again in line with the “Schumpeterian prediction”. Then, we call this the ‘dark side’ of IPR. To our knowledge, this is the first paper highlighting such dichotomy (bright and dark sides of IPR) on a purpose-built high-quality database of globalized firms, which tend to be the most innovative firms in the world

Management of paradoxical tensions in industrial symbiosis: An exploration at the inter-organizational level
Industrial symbiosis (IS) is becoming a prominent inter-organizational approach for improved resources utilization and reduced emissions. IS literature and development efforts focus on interventions needed to overcome or eliminate various barriers, but pay inadequate attention to paradoxes that cannot be suppressed over time and require management. This study combines literature on paradox theory and IS, exploring the identification and management of paradoxical tensions in eight case studies. The results show that IS relationships trigger paradoxical tensions at the strategic and operational levels, surfaced within and between the organizations. These tensions seem to emerge from, and connected to, the persistence of a cooperation–competition paradox within organizations, when engaging with IS partners contradicts with an organization's competitiveness on the market. The study also provides insights into paradoxical tension management within and between organizations in IS relationships by, for example, shifting partner expectations in favor of IS development, separating responsibilities for IS and core activities between departments, or addressing diverging objectives between partners over time. Both at organizational and inter-organizational levels open dialogue, transparency, and collaboration appear to play key roles in tension management.
