Evaluating the effectiveness of a population-level health intervention to increment HCV treatment coverage in tuscany region, Italy: An interrupted time series analysis
Worldwide, an estimated 57.8 million people are chronically infected with the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). The advent of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) has made possible the definition of elimination targets by 2030. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a population-level health intervention to expand access to HCV treatment in the Tuscany Region, Italy. We used individual-level administrative data from the Tuscany region, collected between January 2015 and December 2022. Data include monthly observations on i) the number of serological tests to detect HCV, ii) the number of PCR tests to detect HCV and, iii) the number of prescriptions of direct-acting antivirals against HCV. We implemented an Interrupted Time Series (ITS) model, where the primary outcome was the number of monthly prescriptions of direct-acting antivirals, while the number of tests to detect HCV were included as control variables. The analysis was implemented i) in the general population, ii) in specific sub-population groups. Results show that the health intervention promoted by the Tuscany Regional Health Authority was highly effective in increasing DAAs treatment coverage in the general population, while no significant effects were observed among sub-population groups. Findings of this study provide evidence to support policies at national and subnational levels to booster HCV screening and simplify access to DAA prescriptions
Reinforcement of injectable hydrogels through melt electro-written structures: Influence of shape and pore size on the injection force
Hydrogels are commonly used for tissue engineering applications due to their high water content, biocompatibility, injectability, and ability to mimic the extracellular matrix of native tissues. However, their weak mechanical properties limit their use, especially in load-bearing applications. In this study, we developed fibrous architectures with a pre-defined shape using melt electro-writing (MEW) to strengthen injectable hydrogels. We assessed the injection forces required to successfully extrude the hydrogel reinforced with MEW-printed structures, varying their geometry (square/hexagonal pores) and pore sizes (0.6, 0.8, 1.0 mm) through needles having a size compatible with clinical applications. Our findings indicate that MEW structures with hexagonal pores exhibit a higher tensile modulus than those with square pores. Additionally, the injection forces required to extrude hydrogels embedding MEW structures through needles were greater for hexagonal pores. Thinner pores and smaller needle diameters resulted in higher injection forces; a few conditions among the ones tested were compatible with the limits defined by the EU ISO 7886–1:2018 standard. After injection and crosslinking, hydrogels reinforced with MEW structures showed improved mechanical properties (up to 6.34-fold), particularly when structures with hexagonal pores were used

How to Write a Judgment: Creative Writing and International Adjudication
This article focuses on the craft of writing as an essential component of judicial practice. After explaining why writing matters and why the legal scholar can rely on creative writing to describe judicial writing, the article focuses on the sentence, the characters, and the plot as the basic units of the text. The law is made of words and basic rules of composition can reveal its deeper mechanisms. Whether to include an adverb to highlight importance, to hide the subject of a sentence to construct an objective truth, or to order the arguments in a favourable structure, writers’ choices reflect the balance of the counteracting interests represented in the judicial proceeding. The article relies both on the close reading of several judgments of international courts and the distant reading of the corpus of decisions of the International Court of Justice, analyzed through computational analysis
