The Protection of Mental Health under International Humanitarian Law

Armed conflicts have a profoundly detrimental effect on mental health. Despite this, a comprehensive study on how International Humanitarian Law (‘ihl’) protects mental health is missing. This paper fills this research gap, identifying six main ways ihl tries to safeguard the mental health of those experiencing war. First, ihl protects the mental health of persons under the power of the adverse Party. Second, ihl protects persons who, because of psychological trauma, need medical assistance and care. Third, ihl prohibits psychological torture and ill-treatment. Fourth, ihl limits the type of mental harm that Parties to the conflict can inflict on civilians. Fifth, ihl forbids means and methods of warfare that cause unnecessary mental suffering. Sixth, ihl protects medical and humanitarian workers who provide mental health and psychosocial support. The analysis reveals that the drafters of ihl treaties were already aware, at least to some extent, of the importance of mental health; that various ihl norms aim to preserve mental health; and that the increasing acceptance of mental health as an integral part of health is influencing the interpretation of ihl

AI-Powered Care Robots for Compassionate Care: A Value-Sensitive Approach to Humanizing Healthcare

    Get PDF
Compassionate care is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of high-quality healthcare, essential for optimal outcomes for patients and families. However, stress, exhaustion, and emotional depletion often undermine the ability of caregivers to provide patient-centered attention. This paper aims to (i) propose that integrating care robots equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems into healthcare environments has the potential to reduce caregivers’ workloads and emotional strain, thereby revitalizing the human-centered dimension of care. Achieving this, however, requires designing care robots that adopt a Value-Sensitive Design (VSD) approach. Accordingly, the second aim of this work is to (ii) demonstrate how a VSD in line with the above-mentioned aim can guide the development of care robots that are responsive to the real needs of healthcare professionals. This can be achieved through careful examination of their preferences, specific requirements, and the contexts in which they operate. A specific VSD aims at promoting a model of technological development that enhances professional expertise, ensuring that robotic entities function as supportive tools, while preserving the meaningful dimension of care work

MVP: Multimodal Emotion Recognition Based on Video and Physiological Signals

    No full text
Human emotions entail a complex set of behavioral, physiological and cognitive changes. Current state-of-the-art models fuse the behavioral and physiological components using classic machine learning, rather than recent deep learning techniques. We propose to fill this gap, designing the Multimodal for Video and Physio (MVP) architecture, streamlined to fuse video and physiological signals. Differently then others approaches, MVP exploits the benefits of attention to enable the use of long input sequences (1–2 min). We have studied video and physiological backbones for inputting long sequences and evaluated our method with respect to the state-of-the-art. Our results show that MVP outperforms former methods for emotion recognition based on facial videos, EDA, and ECG/PPG. The code is available on GitHub (https://github.com/EmotionLab/EmotionVMAE)

La stabilità lavorativa nella giurisprudenza costituzionale. L’apporto del Giudice delle leggi all’individuazione, e alla garanzia, di un diritto costituzionale

    No full text
