High order nonstandard finite-difference methods
No full textNonstandard finite difference (NSFD) methods have been considered to overcome some issues of standard methods, particularly when the numerical solution must preserve important properties of the exact solution. These issues increase for high order methods. In this paper we first derive a general procedure to obtain unconditionally positive second order NSFD methods. Furthermore, by suitably adding some parameters ai within these schemes, we show that it is still possible to get positivity, and also to preserve other qualitative properties of the exact solution. In fact, for each particular problem we can get optimal values of ai that guarantee positivity, elementary stability and the minimization of the local truncation error, being possible to achieve also third order nonstandard schemes, which are not present in the literature. As an example of use, we employ the developed theory to derive positive and elementary stable NSFD methods of order one, two and three for a predator-prey model, showing their advantages over other nonstandard methods from the literature

Design of pH‐sensitive alginate–carbopol hydrogel patches for wound healing applications
No full textSmart wound dressings capable of responding to environmental stimuli of biological origin offer a promising strategy for infection management and accelerated healing. In this work, pH-sensitive hydrogel patches composed of alginate and Carbopol were developed for controlled release of a model antiseptic ingredient, the methylene blue agent. The systems were designed aiming to remain stable under acidic conditions (pH 5), favorable to wound healing, and to undergo swelling, erosion, and drug release under alkaline conditions (pH 8), which are typically associated with bacterial infection. Experimental characterization included swelling, erosion, and release studies under static (constant pH) and dynamically changing pH conditions. The realized composite patches showed minimal release at pH 5 and a rapid, complete release of methylene blue at pH 8, driven by pH-induced erosion. Then, a mathematical model was developed to describe the system's behavior and successfully reproduced experimental data using a minimal set of adjustable parameters. The mathematical modeling approach adopted in this study was able to describe the experimental release kinetics with good accuracy when all kinetic rate constants were optimally fitted to the data confirming the erosion controlled release. These results highlight the potential of Carbopol–alginate composites as effective pH-responsive wound dressings demonstrating controlled pH-triggered release behavior

governance structure. It focuses on a case of faculty-led protest to critically
analyse the constraints of hybrid governance while also considering how democratic
practices can arise within them. Beyond the reproduction of neoliberal-authoritarian
dynamics, it highlights the possibilities of agency and resistance in
‘doubly conditioned’ institutional contexts. Drawing on Lincoln’s theoretical
framework, the analysis positions SFCUs within a broader global conversation
on rethinking democracy as an open-ended and evolving process
Global estimates of informal economies and new insights for 152 countries (1997-2022): Using an enhanced modelling approach
No full textUsing an enhanced modelling method, this paper presents new estimates of the Informal Economy
(IE) for 152 countries from 1997 to 2022. We address several limitations from previous estimates
of the IE, notably missing data issues, time-invariant country characteristics, and scaling issues
with exogenous estimates of informality. By incorporating country-specific fixed effects, the
model offers more reliable results. Our findings reveal significant variation in the drivers of IE
between high-income and non-high-income countries. In terms of normative implications, our
results underscore the need for tailored policies in addressing the formalisation of informal activities
in countries with varying income levels
Al confine tra biblioteconomia e digital humanities: contesti, confronti e sviluppi interdisciplinari
No full textIl patrimonio delle biblioteche costituisce uno degli oggetti di studio privilegiati dalle digital humanities. Sin dalle origini le applicazioni di procedimenti formalizzati e automatizzati alle discipline umanistiche hanno rappresentato la risposta a esigenze nate prevalentemente in un contesto di natura linguistica e letteraria; di conseguenza i testi e i documenti conservati nelle biblioteche sono stati e restano materiali da studiare e su cui lavorare per realizzare digitalizzazioni ed edizioni critiche digitali, attività che chiamano in causa le politiche e i temi della metadatazione, della gestione, della conservazione e della valorizzazione del patrimonio bibliografico e documentario. Obiettivo della ricerca dalla quale nasce il volume è dimostrare che, per quanto prospettive e metodologie di ricerca siano differenti, il rapporto tra biblioteconomia e digital humanities non riguarda soltanto il patrimonio ma coinvolge la natura stessa delle discipline: in entrambi i casi, infatti, vi sono sia una componente teorica sia una componente tecnica e pratica e un’apertura al confronto e all’interdisciplinarità. Lo studio comparato ha preso in esame tre aspetti: le rispettive identità disciplinari nel contesto nazionale e internazionale; la formazione e l’insegnamento a livello accademico e il posizionamento nei settori scientifico-disciplinari nel nostro Paese; i temi di ricerca affrontati nelle principali riviste scientifiche italiane di settore. In definitiva, si tratterà di capire quali siano le relazioni attuali tra biblioteconomia e digital humanities, i punti di contatto e gli sviluppi futuri
