Gamblers or Risk-Averse? Competitive Authoritarianism, the Center-Periphery Cleavage and Nationalist Revisionism in Russia and Turkey

    No full text
Revisionism is a growing phenomenon, particularly in imperial successor states. Which factors transform dissatisfied powers into nationalist revisionists? Our hypothesis is that this is determined by military capabilities as a necessary variable, the presence of an authoritarian regime as an enabling variable, and the centre-periphery cleavage as a driving factor. Comparing the most different cases of Russia and Turkey, we find that both presidents have concentrated the decision to resort to military force in their hands by bypassing or splitting the opposition. Whilst Russia appears as a gambler, Turkey has acted more risk-averse

The doctoral thesis offers an edition of Pietro Bembo's Carmina with commentary and Italian translation, tracing the phases of the Venetian author's humanistic education; the edition is based on the 1552 printing; each Latin poem is preceded by an introduction that aims to clarify thematic-literary, chronological elements and aspects related to the textual tradition. The intertextual sources demonstrate a combination of syntactic, lexical and stylistic elements drawn from the classical and humanistic traditions

In Olot, a town in northeastern Spain, BACH, Bayona and Colomer sign an exemplary project that, starting from the orographic condition of the place, manages to “weave” new spatial patterns, “stitch” together the different parts of the urban center and “clothe” the public space, defining functions, practices and movements flexibly. At the same time, the adopted strategy defines new urban and social ecologies, paying great attention to the effects of climate change

Relevance of the net natural inflow for investigating long-term hydrological changes in a managed lake catchment

    No full text
The net natural inflow to a lake is an important quantity for developing lake management strategies and assessing hydrological change. The net natural inflow embeds the relevant hydrological processes governing the lake levels and it determines the lake levels and the emissary discharge under natural conditions, i.e. without withdrawals. The net natural inflow can be calculated by using an inverse procedure that reduces some of the sources of uncertainty that characterize the hydrological balance. In this paper we use the inverse procedure to analyze the net natural inflow of an Italian lake (Lake Bracciano) for which over a century of data are available. The behavior of the net natural inflow to the lake is analyzed, highlighting the high inter-annual variability and the consequent exposure of the lake to extreme events, in particular droughts. Evidence of hydrological change is discussed, as well as the importance of the availability of long time series for meaningful lake analysis and management. The analysis demonstrates the advantages of using the net natural inflow for lake hydrological analysis
