The Aesthetics of the Invisible in Hans-Georg Gadamer
No full textIn this essay I intend to explore a highly interesting aesthetic perspective of Gadamerian philosophy: the human being’s relationship with Beauty and the latter’s capacity to bring us into contact with the infinite, with the Good. Therefore, we must examine to what degree self-displaying, aesthetically exhibiting the supersensible, aids a consideration of the peculiar position adopted by Hans-Georg Gadamer toward metaphysics. Besides, Gadamer himself claimed that the most suitable theoretical arena for reflecting on metaphysics is precisely the relationship between the Good and the Beautiful. All the same, in exposing the cardinal points of the relationship between Good and Beautiful the intention is not to touch on the theme of the political horizon of art, as it emerges from the reflections on “Plato and the Poets.” This is because the true interest here lies in reflecting on the theoretical structure of the relationship between Being–Good–Beauty in order understand the eventual redeeming potential with regard to the nihilism Gadamer skillfully retraced in ideas that run from Nietzsche to Weber, on the one hand, and the mystical drifts of the poetic thinking of Heidegger, on the other. The reformulation of the concept of Being, capable of escaping nihilist or mystical siren song, is generated in Gadamer thanks to a sensitivity toward Renaissance humanism, according to which the finiteness of the human being, his/her caducity, is also the site of his/ her fullness. This is a highly delicate question, which often divides critics. On the one hand, the strong call of humanism to the relationship in the circularity between the human being and the divine appears to have left its traces in Gadamerian reflections. In affirming this, I refer to Gadamer’s relationship with a humanist philosopher who drew his constant interest: Nicholas of Cusa. I will return to his philosophy in the development of my argumentations as it constitutes a precious source of inspiration precisely to Gadamer’s reflection on the concept of Being and the relationship between Good and Beauty. On the other hand, in reflecting on the relationship between infinite and finite, Gadamer seeks an authentic autonomy from any religious appurtenance. Evidence of this twofold necessity is offered by his interpretation of Rilkean poetry. (GW 9)

A machine learning framework for seismic risk assessment of industrial equipment
No full textThe paper aims to propose a novel machine learning framework for seismic risk assessment of industrial facilities. In this respect, a compound artificial neural network model is employed, which is based on two different artificial neural network models in series. The first artificial neural network is a regression model employed to generate samples of a vector-valued intensity measure. The second one is a classification model that is used to predict structural damage, starting from the outcomes of the first artificial neural network model. The datasets used for training and validation of the two artificial neural networks are based on hazard-consistent accelerograms and numerical analyses that are performed with an efficient finite element model of the structure. The methodology entails a preliminary feature selection phase for the identification of the aforementioned vector-valued of intensity measures that better classifies the damage/no-damage condition of the structure. This phase is implemented through the principal component analysis method. Subsequently, the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm is used to generate samples of a selected intensity measure, feeding the first ANN model. In turn, the chosen features are used as input parameters of the second ANN model to generate samples of damage/no-damage events. Using the two ANN in series, the mean annual frequency of exceeding a specific limit state is derived. The proposed framework is validated using a typical multi-storey steel frame, focusing on the seismic risk assessment of a vertical storage tank located at the first floor of the primary structure. The proposed method exhibits some clear advantages of combining numerical models with ANN techniques, mainly related to: a reduced computational time; the avoidance of any prior information on the probabilistic model of fragility curves; and the use of model-driven data
Private response to exclusionary welfare policy: Evidence from Italian municipalities
No full textExclusionary welfare policies are among the flagship proposals in the economic agenda of the far right. Yet, there is little empirical evidence as to whether – after gaining power – such parties do indeed cut welfare provisions for immigrants. Using data on more than 6 million procurement contracts within a close-election Regression
= Discontinuity Design, I estimate that Italian mayors supported by the far right significantly cut welfare spending for immigrants and refugees. However, using novel data on volunteering associations, I also show that the narrow victory of a far-right coalition is followed by a 9.6 % growth in the per-capita number of local NGOs. The effect
is driven by social welfare associations, which provide poverty relief and assistance to vulnerable individuals. Individual-level survey data document how the growth in volunteering is driven by left-leaning citizens with positive attitudes toward immigrants. These findings show how – following political turnovers – the non-profit sector can substitute the state in the provision of public goods that are off the agenda of incumbent policymakers

No full textThis paper addresses the issue of inclusion from a critical and intercultural pedagogy perspective, focusing on the problem of tokenism as a social and interdisciplinary issue. The concept of ‘token’ refers to a form of disguised exclusion,
where seemingly emancipatory practices reinforce underlying subordination.
The study begins by identifying latent forms of exclusion in educational practices through pedagogical figures’ memos. A pedagogical supervision tool is
then used to examine how these issues affect the professionals involved in critical-reflexive practices. The paper adopts a decolonial perspective in intercultural pedagogy, critiquing the ‘token’ concept by exploring the relationship between alterity and difference in pedagogical discourse. It also examines the role
of ideology in education, clarifying the institutional functioning of tokenism and
its effects on service cultures and educational settings. By analysing fields of
experience marked by superficial agency and parity, the paper aims to uncover
latent exclusion and propose alternatives that foster genuine cooperation and
participation through a critical examination of education’s material and symbolic conditions.

In the current paper, we give an alternative proof of this result using modern tools, and at the same time we prove the analogous result for rational normal curves in any projective space. This higher dimensional generalization was claimed without proof in a paper of H.S. White in 1921
