ANTIQUITIES FROM EAST AND WEST IN THE BARBO COLLECTION

From the East, with the collection of Greek and Byzantine objects, started the imperial propaganda that Pietro Barbo (Venice, 23 February 1417-Rome, 26 July 1471) will perfect in Rome with the collection of Roman antiquities in front of the palazzo San Marco, after being elected Pope under the name of Paul II (1464-1471). Constantine the Great, who left Rome to found Constantinople-Byzantium, inaugurated on 11 May 330, was evoked by Pope Barbo when the new Rome on the Bosforo had been conquered by the Ottoman Turks and the ancient capital of the empire had instead risen thanks to the presence of the papal court. Paul II Barbo sought to be recognized not only as the direct heir of Constantine I, but also as a point of arrival in the global history of the Roman Empire, right up to the last Byzantine basileus. Inside the palace, thousands of goods, listed in the inventory of 1457, included precious objects that could represent the excellence of both the West and the Greek-Byzantine world, throughout the centuries: from antiquity until the 15th century. Outside the palace, in platea Sancti Marci, were transferred ancient and monumental works, such as the gray granite basin and the porphyry sarcophagus of Constance, which by their size and exotic material were able to testify the power and vastness of the Roman empire. Pope Barbo had planned other interventions on the ancient works present in Rome and more significant for his ideological project. The lack of consensus, both internally and abroad, prevented the achievement of one of his most ambitious goals for the qualification of St Mark’s Square as a new center of power: the move of the equestrian statue from the Lateran. The identification with Constantine had guaranteed the survival of the gilded bronze, larger than real, but in the years of the pontificate of Paul II it begins to receive more precise iconographic analysis, which will finally lead Bartolomeo Platina, to recognize the character with Marcus Aurelius. It is possible that before planning violent actions, discovered in 1468, the conspiracy of the humanists against the despotic government of Pope Barbo had expressed itself by denying the endorsement to the identification of the statue with Constantine. He would have been the only Roman emperor functional to the expectations, never set aside by Pope Paul II, to affect the precarious balances of the area east of the Mediterranean. The image of the bearded pseudo Constantine in the equestrian statue of the Lateran had triggered a process of iconographic integration with the last emperors of Byzantium, which increased its symbolism. In the payments for the restoration of the equestrian statue of the Lateran would seem to be documented a change of name not accidental to the statue. This change, probably the result of a lively erudite debate, had a profound impact on the project of propaganda wanted by Pope Barbo, whose collection testifies to the wide and ambitious views, as well as a link to the illustrious past of the Roman and Byzantine empires in a wise balance between tradition and innovation

Smart Energy Management for Industrial Buildings: A Solar and EV Charging Case Study in Malta
This study examines energy management and optimization strategies for an industrial building complex in Malta, with a particular emphasis on solar energy estimation, State of Charge (SOC) prediction for electric vehicles (EVs), and the design of an integrated energy storage system. The building cluster is equipped with a 6 MW photovoltaic (PV) system, complemented by plans to expand PV coverage over a parking area designed to accommodate 100 vehicles, 25 of which are EVs. During operational hours, energy generated by rooftop PV systems is utilized to power the building complex, while the PV installations in the parking area supply energy for EV charging via Level 2 (L2) charging stations rated at 11 kW. MATLAB-based simulations were conducted to analyse energy production dynamics, EV charging profiles, and the utilization of surplus energy. The results indicate that the system generates sufficient energy to meet the demands of both the buildings and the EVs, with a weekly surplus of 123 MWh. Further analysis was performed to explore optimal strategies for utilizing this surplus energy, leading to the development of advanced optimization approaches. These include battery energy storage systems, hydrogen generation, and grid interaction mechanisms, all supported by sophisticated forecasting algorithms. A stochastic model was employed to simulate EV distribution patterns, revealing critical periods of high charging demand. The findings suggest that implementing slower charging rates could effectively mitigate peak load pressures on the system. This research highlights the potential for integrating renewable energy sources with EV charging infrastructure and energy storage solutions, providing valuable insights into sustainable practices and their economic feasibility. Future work will focus on enhancing real-time energy management systems using SIMULINK-based modeling to further refine operational efficiency and sustainability [1]
Observation of t ̄t production in Pb+Pb Collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector
Top-quark pair production is observed in lead-lead ((Formula presented)) collisions at (Formula presented) at the Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS detector. The data sample was recorded in 2015 and 2018, amounting to an integrated luminosity of (Formula presented). Events with exactly one electron and one muon and at least two jets are selected. Top-quark pair production is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.1) standard deviations. The measured top-quark pair production cross section is (Formula presented), with a total relative uncertainty of 31%, and is consistent with theoretical predictions using a range of different nuclear parton distribution functions. The observation of this process consolidates the evidence of the existence of all quark flavors in the preequilibrium stage of the quark-gluon plasma at very high energy densities, similar to the conditions present in the early Universe
Evaluation of Bending Stress and Shape Recovery Behavior Under Cyclic Loading in PLA 4D-Printed Lattice Structures
This study aims to analyze the bending behavior of polylactic acid (PLA) structures made by fusion deposition modeling (FDM) technology. The investigation analyzed chiral structures such as lozenge and clepsydra, as well as geometries with wavy patterns such as roller and Es, in addition to a honeycomb structure. All geometries have a relative density of 50%. After being subjected to three-point bending tests, the capacity to spring back with respect to the bending angle and the shape recovery of the structures were measured. The roller and lozenge structures demonstrated the best performance, with shape recovery assessed through three consecutive hot water immersion cycles. The lozenge structure exhibits 25% higher energy absorption than the roller, but the latter ensures better replicability and shape stability. Additionally, the roller absorbs 15% less energy than the lozenge, which experiences a 27% decrease in absorption between the first and second cycle. This work provides new insights into the bending-based energy absorption and recovery behavior of PLA metamaterials, relevant for applications in adaptive and energy-dissipating systems
Spazio pubblico e crisi climatica. Verso nuovi paradigmi per il progetto dello spazio pubblico nella città contemporanea.
A partire dal secondo dopoguerra, gli effetti del cambiamento climatico si sono manifestati con intensità crescente, compromettendo in maniera sensibile l’abitabilità degli insediamenti urbani. Tra gli impatti più rilevanti di questa “crisi climatica”, quello dell’isola di calore urbano - esacerbando il disagio termico e favorendo l’abbandono e il degrado degli spazi collettivi all’aperto - rappresenta una delle principali criticità che investono la città contemporanea. In questo scenario, la ricerca ha indagato il potenziale dello spazio pubblico quale ambito privilegiato per sperimentare strategie progettuali capaci di rispondere alle emergenze contemporanee. A partire dalla lettura critica degli approcci consolidati e dei loro limiti, la Tesi propone una possibile riformulazione dei paradigmi propri della disciplina architettonica, affinché la progettazione dello spazio pubblico possa rispondere in maniera efficace alle sfide imposte dalla crisi climatica. Attraverso l’approfondimento di tre temi progettuali - flessibilità, capacità rigenerativa e ibridazione - e l’analisi di casi studio emblematici, si delineano nuove prospettive operative per lo spazio pubblico della città contemporanea, inteso sempre più come dispositivo di resilienza sociale, economica e soprattutto climatica

Listening represents a core skill in language acquisition processes, although in foreign language teaching – and particularly in the case of Arabic – it has long been neglected in favor of approaches focused on reading and writing, translation, and normative
grammar. This contribution aims to refocus attention on listening as a primary didactic tool for teaching Arabic, offering a theoretical reflection and methodological reading of the textbook Imparare l’arabo ascoltando. The volume serves as an example of a
methodological application centered on the pivotal role of listening in the early stages of language learning, demonstrating how oral input can offer a privileged pathway to acquiring Arabic. Reconsidering listening instruction from both a methodological and
practical perspective does not merely fill a gap; it also contributes to a broader redefinition of the foundations of teaching Arabic as a foreign language, in line with current theoretical and practical developments in applied linguistics and language pedagogy
