    Enhanced Deformation Monitoring in Virtual Reality using Remote Sensing Data in Airport Runway Management

    Deformation monitoring in airport runways is a key task in airport management and operations requiring prompt intervention and actions to maintain surface regularity. The technological advancement in this area has been dramatic. Terrestrial and aerial remote sensing can provide accurate and dense deformation data [1]. In the past decade, the use of satellite observations for airport monitoring has grown due to the advantage of accurate results with high temporal and spatial resolution [2]. However, the satellite remote sensing data are still deployed conventionally to users through bi-dimensional maps and charts, therefore limiting the level of interaction of end-users and impacting the decision-making process. Immersive technologies can fill this gap [3] by enhancing the visualization and communication of information from satellites in spatial environments [4], enabling a better understanding of surface deformations in runways. This research explores the design of a Virtual Reality (VR) tool for visualizing multi-temporal deformations at Runway 3 of the ‘Leonardo Da Vinci Airport’ in Fiumicino, Rome, Italy. The protocol encompasses the use of high-resolution data acquired during November 2016 to December 2019 and processed using the Permanent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) technique. The tool is developed in Unity 3D with the following key design goals: Cross-validation with two or more VR headsets allowing for multi-user collaborative analysis. 3-dimensional interactive visualizations that allow for scalability in visualizing data at the millimeter level as well as isolating sections of interest to stakeholders. Analysis of historical structural data using machine learning to predict future deformations and highlight potential risks. Using satellite remote sensing, we combined sub-millimeter information on the displacements of the pavement runway with the total station to provide a holistic digital model of the physical site. The system can provide an efficient infrastructure modelling and assessment solution, which will allow researchers and engineering professionals to a) create digital 3D snapshots of a physical site for later assessment, b) track positional data on existing displacements, and c) inform the decision-making process regarding locations for early and potential future interventions.     Il quartiere di Aspern Seestadt, situato a nord-est di Vienna, offre l’opportunità di riflettere sulla pianificazione dei nuovi quartieri urbani in relazione alla mitigazione degli effetti della crisi climatica e alla necessità di garantire uno spazio urbano vivace e sostenibile. Concentrandosi sulle caratteristiche dello spazio aperto, l’articolo analizza le linee guida per la mitigazione delle isole di calore che hanno influenzato il progetto del quartiere e le teorie elaborate da Jan Gehl sulla “vita tra gli edifici”, cercando di verificarne l’applicabilità alle strategie di progetto dei parchi finora realizzati. Ci si chiede se il progetto di Aspern Seestadt si ispiri davvero a un approccio alla progettazione urbana sostenibile o se, piuttosto, non si persegua un modello urbano che garantisca spazi rassicuranti, privi di conflitti, familiari, esclusivi (solo per certi gruppi sociali), ma che, di fatto, generano un paesaggio generico.The district of Aspern Seestadt, located north-east of Vienna, offers the opportunity for an in-depth reflection on the planning of new urban neighbourhoods in relation to the mitigation of the effects of the climate crisis and the need to ensure a lively and sustainable urban space. Focusing on the characteristics of open space, the article analyses the heat island mitigation guidelines that influenced the design of the neighbourhood and the theories developed by Jan Gehl on ‘life between buildings’ and tries to verify their applicability to the design strategies of the parks implemented so far. The question arises as to whether the Aspern Seestadt project is really inspired by a sustainable urban design approach or whether, rather, an urban model is being pursued that guarantees reassuring, conflict-free, familiar, exclusive spaces (only for certain social groups), but which, in fact, generate a generic landscape

    Invasive Crayfish Stepping as a Potential Threat for CoastalWaters

    Species belonging to the crustacean infraorder Astacoidea represent taxa of particular interest from a conservation point of view, such as the threatened European crayfish (i.e., Austropotamobius pallipes), and at the same time include invasive taxa having highly negative impacts where they are introduced. Among the latter, some freshwaterdwelling species seem to show some abilities to tolerate high salinity levels, such as Procambarus clarkii Girard, 1852. By using metadata and field observation, this review will investigate whether the alien P. clarkii can threaten coastal waters. Specifically, we will shed light on P. clarkii’s (1) invasiveness, (2) its dispersal pattern, (3) its tolerance to salinity, and (4) its ecological plasticity as an invasive species in relation to estuaries. This new habitat colonization is also possible as P. clarkii has been observed to survive up to 20 ppt of water salinity and a maximum of 30–35 ppt with its lifetime drastically reduced. As a result, P. clarkii colonizes different ecosystems globally, reaching estuarine and coastal ecosystems due to active and passive transport by human and animal vectors. Due to recent discoveries of alien crayfish in estuarine and coastal waters, monitoring activities have become mandatory to preserve coastal habitats and all the aquatic resources (e.g., limicolous birds, endemic fish, fishery and aquaculture activities) inhabiting therein

    Moderating role of biocapacity in the fiscal decentralization–environment nexus

    Global warming is a multifaceted challenge triggered by greenhouse gas emissions attributable to carbon-intensive industrial expansion for economic growth incentives. Therefore, the departure from carbon-intensive to carbon-efficient production process has become compulsory to maintain ecological preservation. In this context, the present study examines how ecological efficiency of affluence, biocapacity, fiscal decentralization, renewable energy expansion, population, financialization, and economic globalization influence carbon intensity in seven emerging and developing countries (EGDVCs) between 2000 and 2019. The outcomes of the Method of Moments Quantile Regression postulated that fiscal decentralization, population, financialization, and economic globalization give rise to carbon intensity. At the same time, ecological efficiency of affluence, renewable energy expansion, and biocapacity support the carbon-neutral objectives of EGDVCs and contribute to ecological preservation. The negative coefficient of the moderator portrays that fiscal decentralization encourages environmental preservation through the biocapacity channel. In other words, fiscally decentralized authorities of countries with substantially high capacity to regenerate materials from nature and absorb waste may bring about energy transition initiatives to tackle carbon intensity and instigate environmental preservation. Keeping in mind these outcomes, EGDVCs are advised to build fiscal decentralization on a more responsive sub-national administrative setup to ensure policy harmony between advancing carbon efficiency and preserving the regenerative capacity of Earth's ecosystem to maintain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on clean energy (SDG-7) and climate action (SDG-13)

    The Stream of Human Dignity and its Relational/Generative Ecology: Biblical Past, Human Rights, Planetary Future

    This essay proposes a reading of human dignity from an agentive/generative perspective. Its biblical roots and general anthropological significance are both probed. Two lines of research are specifically developed. The first concerns the biblical roots of cosmosemiosis (with particular reference to the story of Noah) and the related assumptions for a processive approach to meaning. The second analyzes the proactive and enactive features of the relationship between human beings and the environment observed from an anthropological and ecological perspective. The essay also presents an analysis of the semantic and pragmatic projections of agentive-generative dignity, examining its potential as an interface of intercultural and interspatial translation between legal systems that presuppose human dignity for their own legitimacy. This interpretation of interjuridical translation is applied to the relationship between legal systems on a planetary background molded by the prospective interpenetration of human rights and ecological challenges

    Bystander intervention in bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression among cisgender and heterosexual students: A cross‐linguistic European study

    Bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression (SOGIE) is a pervasive issue affecting sexual and gender minority (SGM) students and has profound adverse effects on mental health and academic performance. Promoting bystander interventions, where peers step in to stop SOGIE-based bullying, may be a promising strategy to reduce such discriminatory behaviors. Yet, reliable cross-linguistic measures tailored specifically to SOGIE-based bullying are lacking. This study validated a scale assessing cis-gender and heterosexual students' bystander intentions to intervene in SOGIE-based bullying across eight languages. A second-order confirmatory factor analysis supported a three-factor model: “Responsibility” (recognizing one's duty to intervene), “Know” (having the skills and knowledge to intervene), and “Act” (taking prompt action to stop SOGIE-based bullying). The scale demonstrated consistent configural and metric invariance across languages and partial scalar invariance, enabling, however, cross-linguistic comparisons. Significant linguistic differences in bystander attitude emerged, with Portuguese and Spanish speakers reporting significant higher levels than Dutch, Slovenian, and English speakers. Responsibility accounted for the most cross-country variation, reflecting differences in perceptions of duty, efficacy, and communication norms regarding SOGIE-based bullying. This validated tool offers a valuable resource for cross-cultural research and educational efforts, with future studies needed to explore cultural dynamics further and extend validation to SGM students
