The impact of horizontal resolution on the representation of thermal air-sea interaction of the Agulhas system in coupled climate-models
No full textThe Agulhas Current is a vigorous western boundary current that flows off the southeastern coast of Africa, linking the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean as part of a broader inter-ocean current system. The Agulhas Current is characterized by intense heat fluxes between the ocean and atmosphere, as well as complex multiscale ocean dynamics. Dynamically unstable currents in this region generate mesoscale eddies, which propagate into the South Atlantic and interact with the Benguela Upwelling system and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. These unique features make the Agulhas region an ideal site for studying air-sea interactions in climate models and examining the relative roles of atmospheric and oceanic weather in driving upper-ocean variability. In this study, we investigate how horizontal resolution in climate models affects their ability to represent thermal air-sea interactions over the Agulhas Current region, by comparing several simulations of state-of-the-art models. We identify ocean- and atmosphere-driven regimes using a covariance analysis of sea surface temperatures and turbulent heat fluxes. Our findings suggest that a minimum ocean model resolution of approximately 25 km is necessary to capture the signature of ocean dynamics, leading to a better alignment with theoretical and observational results. Furthermore, we identify a transition scale between ocean-driven and atmosphere-driven regimes within the 2°–5° range: when this critical length scale is exceeded, the ocean-driven behavior is filtered out and the atmosphere-driven regime, which becomes relevant at larger scales, dominates. While both oceanic and atmospheric resolution play a role, we find that increasing the horizontal resolution in the ocean component yields a comparatively larger improvement in the representation of air-sea flux variability

No full textThis paper examines MyceliuMinds, an artistic project conceived by Matteo Domenichetti and curated by Milovan Farronato, as a case of digital artivism aimed at questioning the forms of sociality and pow-er that structure the algorithmic ecosystem of social media platforms. Presented in 2022 at the Casa degli Artisti in Milan, the project unfolds through a video trilogy and a participatory performance -the Swinging Club -in which users exchange their Instagram profiles to experiment with new forms of co-habitation within digital space. The research is based on the analysis of the project’s visual and textual materials, as well as on a series of interviews conducted with the artist, the curator, and the partici-pants involved in the performance. The investigation focused on reconstructing the networks of peo-ple, collaborations, and materials that made the project possible, and on examining how the work was received and discussed on Instagram, with particular attention to the effects it generated within specif-ic digital communities.In dialogue with Shoshana Zuboff’s (2019) reflection on surveillance capitalism and Anna Tsing’s studies (2021) on mycelium and interdependence, MyceliuMinds is interpreted as a form of symbolic resistance and relational experimentation. The article aims to show how practices of digital artivism can open spaces for agency and collective reflection, suggesting new modes of coexist-ence and political imagination within the context of social media platform
Neural Pathways of Visual Face Recognition Immediately After Birth
No full textThe present study aimed to investigate the electrophysiological correlates of face-identity recognition in newborn infants immediately after birth. Electroencephalographic acquisition was continuously recorded in 23 newborn infants (3 < age < 24 h of life) during the following visual task: presentation of a woman's face for 60 s ("known face"); random presentation of 50 known faces, 50 novel women's faces, and 50 chessboards (for 2 s each). The final sample included in ERP analyses was composed of 11 newborn infants (male/female: 6/5; age: 5 h 16 ' +/- 3 h 51 '). A greater negative amplitude of the N290 and smaller P400 and LC2 were found in response to the known face compared with the novel one in the left hemisphere. A shorter N290 latency was detected during the known face presentation compared with the novel one, and a longer latency of the same component was observed during novel face presentation compared with the chessboard. These findings suggest that newborns process a face differently from an object at birth and that they can discriminate a new face from a familiar one previously viewed for one minute

According to Theweleit, this competition leads to the “dismissal” of language. Brinkmann's provocative statement that language is ultimately unimportant seems to confirm this thesis. However, this article shows that Brinkmann's literary practice does not represent a capitulation to technology, but rather develops a transmedial poetics in which stimuli from the media are integrated into a literary concept that focuses on the body
