Growth of a subduction orogen: Deformation styles and exhumation patterns in the Dinarides-Albanides-Hellenides
Subduction orogens grow through frontal accretion and crustal underplating, with the modes of accretion controlled by the strength of the basal and wedge materials. However, in retreating subduction systems, where crustal thinning occurs, the mechanisms driving upper plate thickening remain poorly understood, and their surface expression is difficult to discern. The Dinarides-Albanides-Hellenides orogen in the Eastern Mediterranean provides a compelling case to investigate these processes and their impact on exhumation patterns. Evolved during the eastward subduction of Adria beneath Eurasia since the Late Cretaceous, the orogen shows along-strike variations in deformation style, controlled by the thickness of Triassic evaporitic décollement. In the north, the absence of a décollement resulted in basement-involved deformation, focusing Middle-Late Miocene to Pliocene exhumation at the orogenic front. In the south, thick evaporites facilitated basement-cover decoupling, limiting exhumation at the front while focusing Late Miocene–Pliocene exhumation in the interior through underplating. In the hinterland, extension-related exhumation progressively rejuvenated toward the foreland, from Middle Miocene to Pliocene, suggesting slab rollback as the primary geodynamic driver. Our results demonstrate that from the Middle Miocene to Pliocene, crustal accretion through underplating occurred at the same time as hinterland extension triggered by slab rollback. This tectonic phase likely marks the most recent stage of a long-term accretionary cycle that thickened the crustal edifice in a system with retreating subduction boundaries. Our findings highlight the dual role of crustal accretion and thinning in building and shaping the orogen and suggest a broader context of plate reorganization in the Mediterranean during the Miocene
This volume, Nuovi Desaparecidos del Mediterraneo, offers an interdisciplinary reading of contemporary disappearances along Europe’s maritime borders, interpreting them not as fatal events but as structural effects of political, economic, and legal dispositifs producing death, vulnerability, and invisibility. Drawing on literature, critical pedagogy, decolonial studies, social sciences, law, arts, and testimonies, the book examines the intersections of necropolitics, migration policies, racialization, and public memory. The Mediterranean emerges as a necro-space shaped by pushbacks, failures to rescue, and externalization practices that generate “new desaparecidos”: lives suspended between life and death, deprived of symbolic inscription and legal redress. The volume presents the Observatory on the New Mediterranean Disappeared, documenting systematic human rights violations, and includes analyses of land and sea borders, educational segregation, labor exploitation, and the crimes against humanity embedded in border governance. It highlights the role of memory and artistic practice as forms of resistance, as well as the transformative potential of education in countering the public pedagogy of indifference. A comparative lens with the Argentine desaparición illuminates continuities and differences in contemporary technologies of erasure. Ultimately, the book calls for shared responsibility: building counter-archives, practices of care, and new geographies of hope so that no life remains without a name, without truth, and without memory

Real-time metro train rescheduling under uncertainties: A hybrid machine learning and integer L-shaped approach
Metro trains inevitably encounter faults during operation, leading to disturbances or disruptions. Considering the uncertainties in both the scenario type (such as delay, out-of-service, and rescue) and the duration of these disturbances or disruptions, this paper investigates the real-time train rescheduling problem in the context of Industry 5.0. A risk-averse two-stage stochastic programming model is formulated to generate rescheduling solutions for each possible uncertainty realization and ensure their seamless transition. In this model, the first stage makes rescheduling decisions that are independent of uncertainty realizations, such as the number of dispatched backup trains and whether to short-turn trains during fault handling. The second stage adopts all dispatching measures applicable to metro lines and makes additional rescheduling decisions. To integrate human factors into decision-making, the general conservative attitude of dispatchers towards risk management is captured using a mean-conditional value-at-risk criterion. Under the traditional integer L-shaped framework, the model is decomposed into a first-stage master problem and several second-stage subproblems. Aligning with the technological advancements of Industry 5.0, supervised machine learning is used to predict the objective values of the subproblems instead of solving them explicitly, thereby enabling the rapid addition of approximate optimality cuts and improving computational efficiency. Numerical experiments are conducted on the Beijing Yizhuang Metro Line. The computational results show that the proposed solution approach reduces the average computation time by 99.02% compared to GUROBI, and the developed stochastic model lowers the average objective value by over 22% compared to the practical strategy, contributing to the development of intelligent and resilient metro systems
Microwave Surface Resistance of Tl-1223 Films in a DC Magnetic Field
We present first preliminary surface impedance measurements on Tl-1223 films in dc magnetic fields, in view of potential applications for the next generation Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh) at CERN. The Tl-1223 samples were produced through laser ablation, with nominal thickness of 1 upμ m and grown on a thick LaAlO3 substrate. The presence of Tl-1212 phase identified by XRD and BSE microscopy, could be avoided by changing the oxygen partial pressure during heat treatment. The high-frequency transport properties of the samples were characterized using microwave resonant devices, at fixed frequencies of 14.9 GHz, 24.2 GHz and 26.7 GHz, in the temperature range 40 K to 140 K. An external applied static magnetic field up to 12 T was applied. Samples from subsequent batches exhibited huge improvements in the microwave properties, confirming the progress in the deposition technique

Overtourism and Hostile Architecture: Preliminary Assessments of the Effects in Major Italian Cities
The term overtourism is used when the number of visitors in each location becomes disproportionate to the capacity of the site to sustainably manage tourist flows. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), overtourism denotes the negative impact of tourism on a destination, affecting both the visitor experience and, more significantly, the quality of life of residents. To better assess the impact that overtourism has had on major Italian cities over the past decade, it is essential to understand the political strategies implemented by local administrations and the resulting urban and social transformations. City administrators in the most attractive tourist destinations have adopted solutions that encourage tourist consumption while contributing to the displacement of residents. Among these strategies, hostile architecture stands out as a measure designed to control and influence the behaviour, attitudes, and well-being of specific groups of people within public spaces. In this context, several aspects can be evaluated: the weakening of local public transportation (explicit hostile architecture), the removal or alteration of benches (implicit hostile architecture), the disappearance of public restrooms (denied architecture), and other similar interventions. After establishing the general framework of reference, this study presents an assessment based on direct survey techniques, aiming to preliminarily identify the impact of overtourism-induced discomfort on tourist decision-making. This type of consultation, targeting key industry stakeholders as well as directly affected individuals both tourists and residents focuses on hostile solutions to foster a deeper understanding of the ongoing transformations
