    The actual ability of Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanisms included in EU international agreements to sufficiently safeguard Human Rights: the specific case of Privacy and Data Protection

    The contribution focuses on the actual ability of Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanisms included in the international agreements concluded by the EU to sufficiently safeguard human rights, with particular reference to the fundamental rights to privacy and personal data protection. In order to safeguard such rights, EU authorities could decide to suspend data flows from Europe to a non-EU State. However, such suspension could seriously damage foreign investors, who could initiate an ISDS procedure against the EU. The aim of the contribution, therefore, is to understand to what extent the Investment Tribunals eventually seized could take into consideration the abovementioned rights when adopting their decisions, and if there are elements that could save the EU from negative judgments

    Continuous Subsidence of Dallol Volcano Caused by Magmatic, Hydrothermal, and Salt Dissolution Processes: Insights From InSAR Observations

    The Dallol volcano on the axis of the Erta Ale ridge (Afar rift) offers an ideal opportunity to study the interaction between magmatic and hydrothermal processes. Volcanic activity in Dallol has developed in an area below sea level with a salt plain. Dallol has been actively deforming since InSAR measurements started in the area in 2004. However, the source of deformation under Dallol remains unclear. We present a new InSAR study of Dallol from 2014 to 2023 showing at least three concentric deformation signals of range increase consistent with subsidence with rates ranging 23–43 mm/yr in the satellite Line-of-Sight. The main subsidence occurs at Dallol volcano, and two smaller maxima occur at the Black Mountain and the Bubbling Pool areas to the south and southwest of Dallol, respectively. Our modeling indicates that the deformation is caused by contraction of three sill-shaped sources (Okada tensile dislocations) at depths ranging 0.6–1.5 km, each with a volume contraction in the range 1.8–5.5 × 104 m3/yr. Time series analysis shows that the subsidence at Dallol volcano and Black Mountain was continuous and linear in time. Furthermore, an integrated observation of InSAR with the geology, resistivity image and seismic reflection of the area suggest that the 1.5 km deep source under Dallol is the cooling and contraction of a magma reservoir. At Black Mountain (1 km deep) and Bubbling Pool (0.6 km deep), the data suggest that subsidence is due to either a pressure decreases in the shallow hydrothermal system and/or salt dissolution

    The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) in Veterinary Medicine: A Focused Review in Dogs and Cats

    The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) measures the rate at which erythrocytes aggregate and sediment in a fixed time in an anticoagulated blood tube and is expressed as a speed (mm/h). The ESR is still widely used in human medicine mainly as a modified or alternate method to the original Westergren. In veterinary medicine, it was employed in the 1940s–1960s after which it was gradually abandoned or rarely employed. More papers using the Westergren method have been published in dogs rather than in cats. In recent years, the test has regained importance. This narrative review describes the principle of ESR, which is related to the increase in a few acute response proteins such as fibrinogen, immunoglobulin M, and α2-macroglobulin which act to aggregate RBCs. Reference intervals were established for dogs and cats for the original and modified Westergren method. The ESR is mainly used to detect inflammatory conditions derived from infection, urinary or orthopedic disorders, and also miscellaneous diseases. The application of the modified ESR is supported by appropriate reference intervals; however, further studies are needed to assess the influence of age, sex, and breed both for dogs and cats

    Elastic–plastic homogenization of additively manufactured F2CCZ cells

    In recent years the demand of components with low weight and high mechanical properties in terms of strength and stiffness has rapidly increased. In this scenario, lattice structures can provide a compelling alternative with respect to the classical bulk components. In this study, the elastic–plastic behaviour of face centred cubic unit cell with vertical strut (F2CCZ) manufactured through laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and made of AlSi10Mg, was explored. Standard bulk unnotched specimens were initially produced and tensile tests were performed to investigate the elastic–plastic behaviour of the material. The obtained results were used to perform, through finite element (FE), elastic–plastic homogenization of the representative volume elements (RVEs) with nominal geometry and by using periodic boundary conditions (PBCs). A novel simplified approach combining Hill yielding criterion, Levy-Mises plastic flow rule and a reference plastic curve was proposed to describe the different hardening of RVEs in the various directions. Simplified mathematical expressions were proposed and validated to characterize, for the first time, the dependence of elastic–plastic homogenized properties on th aspect ratio (AR). After that, novel graded lattice specimens, with the aim of localizing the failure in the centre of the specimen, were designed and tensile tests were performed with digital image correlation (DIC) for strain measurements. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to investigate the differences between asbuilt and as-designed strut diameters, and the obtained results were employed to perform FE simulations. Finally, the proposed framework was validated both numerically and experimentally, and a discussion is provided

    A dynamic oligopoly with international trade and the environment: an evolutionary approach

    This article examines a dynamic oligopoly model in which firms choose between dirty and green technologies under international trade. We begin by analysing the static problem of Nash equilibrium in an oligopolistic industry where goods are sold both domestically and abroad. Using an evolutionary approach, we then study the resulting dynamic system, focusing on the emergence of different long-term scenarios shaped by technological characteristics and the parameters of environmental and trade policies. Our findings demonstrate how environmental taxes and import tariffs strategically influence the transition to green technologies
