The EU Legal Framework on Personal Data Flows to Third Countries and its Interplay with EU International Commitments in the Field of Trade Law
The article focuses on how the European Union deals with personal data flows to third countries, the regulation of which attempts to balance two conflicting interests: on the one hand, the need to facilitate cross-border data transfers for commercial reasons; on the other, the need to protect personal data and privacy. Preliminarily, it will be shown that the current EU internal legal framework on the matter, as designed by EU legislators, interpreted by the Court of Justice and implemented by the Commission, gives top priority to the protection of individuals, at the expense of economic needs. Subsequently, the contribution will explain that certain international commitments made by the EU in the field of trade law – some concerning in general the liberalisation of trade in services, some others devoted more specifically to data flows – are not consistent with the balance designed by the EU internal legal framework. Finally, it will be also demonstrated that the approach of EU trade commitments seriously risks undermining the one of the EU internal legal framework
Design of an Efficient Thin Film Lithium Niobate Modulator at 1064 nm
Thin film lithium niobate modulators around the 1 μm window have seen limited development, despite applications in spectroscopy and space communications. We report the design of a 1064 nm modulator for the CSEM TFLN platform
GEOLOGY OF THE ALPI APUANE AND THEIR MARBLES: AN UPDATE OVERVIEW
The Alpi Apuane are renowned globally for their marble deposits,
notably the famed white Carrara marble, quarried there for over two
millennia. The occurrence of marble within a region predominantly
composed of non-metamorphic rock types has captivated geological
interest since the early 19th century. Consequently, this area was the
site of Italy’s earliest modern geological maps and remains a crucial
zone for structural and tectonic research. Following a general tectonic
introduction, this study provides a current geological synthesis of the
Alpi Apuane, emphasizing structures, tectono-metamorphic development,
and the chronology of deformation events. Furthermore, the
microstructural variability of the marbles will be illustrated and correlated
with the different kinematic and dynamic stages of the wedge
at the crustal scale
Hyperspectral Detection of Single and Combined Effects of Simulated Tree Shading and Alternaria alternata Infection on Sorghum bicolor, from Leaf to UAV-Canopy Scale
Agroforestry systems offer clear environmental and agronomic advantages, but their effect on plant–biotic stressor interactions remains poorly understood. Specifically, the shade from companion trees can create microclimates favorable to fungal diseases on herbaceous crops. This potential drawback may offset other benefits, highlighting the urgent need for advanced plant health monitoring in these systems. This study assessed the potential of hyperspectral reflectance to detect the single and combined effects of simulated tree shading and infection by the fungal pathogen Alternaria alternata on grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) under rainfed field conditions. Sorghum was grown either under full light or 50% shading conditions. Half of the plots were artificially inoculated with an A. alternata spore suspension (2 × 108 CFU mL−1), while the others served as controls. Leaf and ground-canopy measurements were acquired with a full range spectroradiometer (VNIR-SWIR, 400–2,400 nm) and UAV imagery covered the VIS-NIR range (400–1,000 nm) before the onset of visible symptoms. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance of leaf and ground-canopy data revealed significant effects of shading (Sh), infection (Aa), and their interaction (p < 0.05), allowing early detection of infection two days before symptom appearance, while UAV data showed only singular significant effects. Partial least squares discriminant analysis accuracy reached 78% at the leaf level, 90% at the ground-canopy level, and 74% (Sh) and 75% (Aa) at the UAV scale. Furthermore, vegetation spectral indices derived from the spectra confirmed greater physiological stress in shaded and infected plants, consistent with disease incidence assessments. Our results establish scale-specific hyperspectral reflectance spectroscopy as a powerful, non-destructive technique for early plant health surveillance in agroforestry. This advanced optical sensing capability is poised to illuminate complex stressor interactions, marking a significant step forward for precision agroforestry management

In vivo validation of Wireless Power Transfer System for Magnetically Controlled Robotic Capsule Endoscopy
This paper presents the in vivo validation of an inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) system integrated for the first time into a magnetically controlled robotic capsule endoscopy platform. The proposed system enables continuous power delivery to the capsule without the need for onboard batteries, thus extending operational time and reducing size constraints. The WPT system operates through a resonant inductive coupling mechanism, based on a transmitting coil mounted on the end-effector of a robotic arm that also houses an external permanent magnet and a localization coil for precise capsule manipulation. To ensure robust and stable power transmission in the presence of coil shift, misalignment or rotation, a 3D receiving coil and a closed-loop adaptive control system are implemented. The system has been extensively characterized in laboratory settings and validated through in vivo experiments using a porcine model, demonstrating reliable power transfer and effective robotic navigation in realistic gastrointestinal conditions: the average received power was 110 mW at a distance of 9 cm between the coils, with variable capsule rotation angles. The results confirm the feasibility of the proposed WPT approach for autonomous, battery-free robotic capsule endoscopy, paving the way for enhanced diagnostic in gastrointestinal medicine
Standard specimen geometries do not always lead to consistent fatigue results for epoxy adhesives
This paper questions the recommendation regarding the use of standard specimen geometries, (Type I, Type II, and Type IV), for estimating the tensile quasi-static and fatigue properties of structural epoxy adhesives. The work presents results from an experimental program investigating the performance of structural epoxy adhesives indicating a significant effect of the specimen geometry, especially when referring to fatigue loading. Simple finite element models are also developed to facilitate the comparison of the stress distribution along the three specimen geometries. The fatigue experimental results allowed the derivation of probabilistic S-N curves, showing higher fatigue sensitivity of Type I specimens compared to Type II and IV. Furthermore, probability distribution function (PDF) curves of the equivalent static strength estimated by using Sendeckyj's wear-out model attributed lower mean strength and higher variance for Type I specimens validating the fatigue data
Enhancing Failure Resilience of Cloud-Edge Microservices: The FREEDA Approach
FREEDA is an ongoing research project aimed at supporting DevOps engineers in achieving failure-resilient and sustainable deployments of microservice-based applications across the Cloud-Edge computing continuum. This paper first introduces the context and core concept of FREEDA, followed by a focus on how it enhances the failure resilience of microservices deployed across the Cloud-Edge continuum. Specifically, we present a declarative approach for generating deployment constraints designed to enhance the resilience of microservices prior to their deployment. Additionally, we introduce a proof-of-concept implementation and highlight its potential through an illustrative example
