    Il nome di Plauto compare in alcuni loci all’interno dei prologhi delle commedie, con nove occorrenze dirette e due sintagmi in cui compare l’aggettivo plautinus associato a fabula. Queste presenze, sebbene spesso ritenute sporadiche, appaiono in quella sezione dei prologhi nella quale si forniscono informazioni sul modello greco e sulla versione latina. Nonostante la loro rilevanza, né l’indagine filologica né gli studi onomastici hanno analizzato in profondità il ruolo e le funzioni semantiche e drammaturgiche della presenza del nome di Plauto. L’analisi delle occorrenze e delle loro funzioni dimostra che il nome di Plauto non è un semplice riferimento autoreferenziale, ma assume valenze interpretative significative.The name of Plautus appears in several loci within the prologues of his comedies, with nine direct occurrences and two phrases in which the adjective plautinus is associated with fabula. These instances, although often considered sporadic, appear in the section of the prologues where information is provided regarding the Greek model and its Latin adaptation. Despite their relevance, neither philological inquiry nor onomastic studies have thoroughly analyzed the role and functions of Plautus' name within the text. The analysis of these occurrences and their functions demonstrates that the name of Plautus is not merely a self-referential element but carries significant interpretative value

    Risk of Neck Hematoma Following Thyroidectomy in Patients Taking Direct Oral Anticoagulants: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis from Nine High-Volume European Centers (RAGNO Study)

    Background: Postoperative neck hematoma is an infrequent but potentially fatal complication following thyroidectomy. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) on the occurrence of this complication. Methods: Patients who underwent thyroidectomy between January 2020 and December 2022 in nine high-volume thyroid surgery centers in Europe were retrospectively evaluated. Based on taking direct oral anticoagulants, patients were divided into two groups: the DOAC Group and the Control Group. Propensity score matching 1:1 was performed between the two groups, which were then compared through a univariate analysis. Results: The total number of patients enrolled based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria was 8985. Following propensity score matching, the study population consisted of 316 patients: 158 in the DOAC Group and 158 in the Control Group. In the DOAC Group, the overall incidence of neck hematoma was 5.70% (4.43% for neck hematomas managed conservatively, and 1.27% for those that required surgical revision of hemostasis). No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of the incidence of this complication. Hospital readmission due to neck hematoma was not observed in any patient. No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of the timing of the onset of neck hematomas that required surgical revision of hemostasis. Conclusions: This study showed that direct oral anticoagulants, in the field of thyroid surgery, have no impact on the occurrence of postoperative neck hematoma. Therefore, based on our findings, it can be concluded that thyroidectomy can be safely performed in patients taking this class of drugs

    The Use of Volume Stable Collagen Matrices (VCMXs) for Soft Tissue Augmentation Around Dental Implants: A Comprehensive Review

    Adequate peri-implant hard and soft tissue volume is critical for ensuring implant stability, long-term functionality, and optimal esthetic results. While autogenous connective tissue grafts (CTGs) remain the gold standard for soft tissue augmentation, volume-stable collagen matrices (VCMXs) have emerged as a promising alternative, offering key advantages such as eliminating donor-site morbidity, reducing postoperative pain, and improving patient acceptance. This review summarizes the evidence on VCMXs from studies published between 1995 and 2024, with a focus on mucosal thickness gain, soft tissue stability, and patient-reported outcomes. To date, the evidence on VCMXs is still conflicting. Randomized controlled trials indicate that VCMXs can effectively increase peri-implant mucosal thickness (ranging from 0.3 to 1.0 mm), although the included clinical studies are very heterogeneous in terms of follow-up time. According to the literature, CTGs demonstrate superior long-term volumetric stability, particularly in highly esthetic zones. On the other hand, VCMXs demonstrated comparable mid-term outcomes while offering reduced postoperative discomfort, as confirmed by multicenter noninferiority trials. While VCMXs may yield slightly inferior clinical outcomes compared to CTGs, their patient-centered benefits make them a viable and often preferable option for soft tissue augmentation in implant dentistry. In conclusion, current evidence supports the use of VCMXs as valuable tools in contemporary implant therapy, particularly for specific indications where their benefits outweigh limitations

    Alcohol consumption and DNA methylation: an epigenome-wide association study within the French E3N cohort

    Background: Alcohol consumption can have harmful effects on health, depending on the quantity and frequency. Understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms is essential to grasp its health consequences. The study aimed to assess the association between alcohol consumption and blood DNA methylation, an epigenetic mechanism that controls gene expression. Methods: The epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) included 1,538 women from a case-cohort study within the French E3N cohort. Weighted linear mixed-effects models were used to assess the associations between self-reported alcohol consumption (in g/day in 1993) and DNA methylation at 715,986 CpGs measured with the HumanMethylationEPIC Beadchip. Women were cancer-free at blood collection in 1995–1999. Results: Of the 715,986 sites analyzed, 19,255 were associated with alcohol consumption (FDR < 0.05). Over-representation analysis highlighted enrichment of genes involved in cancer, the nervous system and aging. Of these 19,255 sites, 1,528 were replicated in an independent case–control study, with 85 also identified in other EWAS. Notably, at least six studies reported sites in SLC7A11, ANP32B, MCM2, HNRNPA1, SNORD30, and TRA2B genes. Conclusions: Several potential methylation markers for alcohol consumption, documented prior to blood sampling, have been identified. The link between these sites and chronic diseases should be investigated to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the harmful effects of alcohol consumption on health

    Poor Man’s Majorana Tetron

    The Majorana tetron is a prototypical topological qubit stemming from the ground-state degeneracy of a superconducting island hosting four Majorana modes. This degeneracy manifests as an effective nonlocal spin degree of freedom, the most paradigmatic signature of which is the topological Kondo effect. Degeneracies of states with different fermionic parities also characterize minimal Kitaev chains, which have lately emerged as a platform to realize and study unprotected versions of Majorana modes, dubbed poor man’sMajorana modes. Here, we introduce the “poor man’sMajorana tetron,” comprising four quantum dots coupled via a floating superconducting island. Its charging energy yields nontrivial correlations among the dots, although, unlike a standard tetron, it is not directly determined by the fermionic parity of the Majorana modes. The poor man’s tetron displays parameter regions with a twofold-degenerate ground state with odd fermionic parity, which gives rise to an effective Anderson impurity model when coupled to external leads. We show that this system can approach a regime featuring the topological Kondo effect under a suitable tuning of experimental parameters. Therefore, the poor man’s tetron is a promising device to observe the nonlocality of Majorana modes and their related fractional conductance

    Dirofilaria spp. infection in cats from the Mediterranean basin: diagnosis and epidemiology

    Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens, causing heartworm disease and subcutaneous dirofilariosis, respectively, are zoonotic mosquito-borne filarioids infecting a plethora of hosts including cats. Only fragmented data are available on the diagnosis and epidemiology of feline dirofilariosis. We assessed the occurrence of both nematode infections, their risk factors and clinicopathological abnormalities in cats, from six countries of the Mediterranean Basin. In addition, Wolbachia spp. endosymbionts were assessed in Dirofilaria spp.-positive animals. Blood and sera samples were obtained from cats with outdoor access from Spain (n = 354), Portugal (n = 287), Italy (n = 125), Greece (n = 116), Israel (n = 101) and France (n = 100). Cat sera were tested by both direct antigenic (SNAP test, commercial ELISA kit) and indirect antibodies (in-house ELISA) serological tools, and blood samples by real time and conventional PCR targeting Dirofilaria spp. DNA, followed by sequencing. A statistical analysis was run to assess the link between Dirofilaria spp. infection and independent variables, as well as among feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and/or feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) co-infections, and clinicopathological abnormalities. Overall, 3.8% (i.e., 41/1,083) cats scored positive for Dirofilaria spp. infection with prevalences ranging from 2% in Israel to 7.8% in Greece. Of the 41 positive cats, 16 were infected by D. immitis (by SNAP test and/or PCR) and two by D. repens (by PCR); the remaining animals were antibody-positive for Dirofilaria spp. using the in-house ELISA. Wolbachia DNA was detected in one D. immitis-infected cat. Nematode positivity was significantly associated with age, breed, hyporexia, dandruff, and dyspnoea. This study provides data on the prevalence of Dirofilaria spp. infection in cats from the Mediterranean Basin, as well as new insights on its diagnosis, revealing the importance of performing strategic chemoprophylactic treatments for cats living in areas where the infection is endemic in dogs
