    Self-Selected Comfortable Foot Position in Upright Standing: Correlation with Anthropometric Measurements and Comparison to Standardized Foot Position During Stabilometric Exam—An Observational Study

    Foot position affects postural stability during upright standing; however, conflicting indications have been reported for the ideal foot placement during stabilometric exams. The aims of this study were to evaluate (1) the correlation between anthropometric measurements (AMs) and between-feet measurements (BFMs) in self-selected comfortable foot position (SCFP) and (2) the effect of comfortable and standardized foot position (SFP) on plantar pressure and stabilometric parameters. Stabilometry was conducted on twenty healthy subjects in terms of SCFP and SFP. Correlation between AMs and BFMs in SCFP was investigated via Pearson’s analysis. Data variability was assessed using the coefficient of variation, and statistical differences between SCFP and SFP were evaluated via the Wilcoxon test. No correlation was found between AMs and BFMs. Subjects placed their feet nearly parallel in SCFP with a wider inter-heel distance. The variability of plantar pressure parameters was greater in SFP. A lower foot contact area on the right side and higher plantar pressures in the left midfoot region (p-value < 0.05) were found in SFP as compensatory foot adaptations. According to the present study, a comfortable foot position allows for the reduction in postural stability and plantar pressure parameter variability. This position may help improve statistical power when investigating statistical differences between conditions in stabilometry

    Agroecological approaches in Mediterranean cropping systems: experimental evidence from a real on-farm comparison

    Mediterranean cropping systems are increasingly affected by multidimensional pressures, including climate instability, soil fertility degradation, and market volatility. These challenges call for a systemic reconfiguration of production models. In this context, agroecology, conceived as an integrated, systemic, and place-based paradigm, offers a viable pathway to improve resource use efficiency, agroecosystem resilience, and socioeconomic sustainability. This contribution presents the results of a two-year field trial (2022–2024) conducted in Basilicata (Southern Italy), comparing a simplified conventional system with a agroecological system specifically designed in accordance with seven selected principles of agroecology (Carlile & Garnett, 2021; Ewert et al., 2023). The experimental design, implemented under real on-farm conditions, was structured around four strategic components: (i) crop diversification, through three-year rotations including cereals (Triticum durum – durum wheat), legumes (Vicia sativa – common vetch, Lens culinaris – lentil, Cicer arietinum – chickpea), and oilseeds (Brassica napus – canola), combined with intercropping practices and multi-cultivar strategies to enhance temporal, spatial, and genetic diversity (Messéan et al., 2021);;(ii) input optimization, through site-specific nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization based on VRT (Variable Rate Technology); (iii) integration of microbial biotechnologies, via foliar application of Methylobacterium symbioticum SB23; (iv) functional comparison between simplified and complex agronomic strategies. The agroecological system achieved grain yields and protein content comparable to or higher than those of the conventional system, while significantly improving input efficiency. VRT-based fertilization led to an average reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus inputs by –39% and –30%, respectively, without compromising yield or quality. In unfertilized plots, the application of M. symbioticum resulted in an average yield increase of 17% compared to the control, with grain protein content reaching up to 13.5% and total nitrogen accumulation comparable to that of conventionally fertilized plots. These findings highlight the contribution of foliar biological nitrogen fixation in low-input systemsIn addition, under no-input management, the durum wheat–vetch intercropping system exhibited clear agronomic advantages, including an average increase of 2 percentage points in grain protein content, enhanced nitrogen uptake, and Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) values consistently above 1, indicating improved land-use efficiency. The entire protocol was co-designed with farmers and local stakeholders within the Living Labs of the AgriEcoMed and TECH4YOU projects, ensuring territorial adaptation, replicability, and scalability. The integration of crop diversification, site-specific input management, microbial biostimulants, and participatory co-design constitutes a robust and transferable model for the agroecological transition of Mediterranean cereal systems

    Bioassay-Guided Procedure Coupled with HR-ESIMS Dereplication for Isolation of Antiproliferative Bromo-Tyramine Derivative from Aplysina cauliformis

    : The marine environment is vital for sustaining life on Earth and offers a significant, untapped source of bioresources that could enhance the blue economy. The present investigation used our protocol to quickly identify bioactive molecules in Aplysina cauliformis organic extracts. This procedure combines a bioassay-guided approach with the dereplication of mass data through bioinformatic analysis. This approach identified the compound N,N,N-trimethyl-3,5-dibromotyramine, a bromo-tyramine analog that showed promising antiproliferative activity on HepG2 cell lines, with an IC50 value of 37.49 ± 1.94 μg/mL after 24 h. Furthermore, the evaluation of related gene expression confirmed the mechanism of cell death to be apoptosis. N,N,N-trimethyl-3,5-dibromotyramine increased the expression of pro-apoptotic β-cell lymphoma 2-associated X protein (BAX) and Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP-1) cleavage (c-PARP-1) and downregulated the anti-apoptotic β-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) and phospho-Akt (p-AKT).     In Spain, social housing experienced an evolutionary history characterized by design experimentation and by the adoption of innovative technologies for the construction of important works. To the point of being considered today as important architectural heritages to be safeguarded. The contribution illustrates peculiarities and original solutions present in a residential complex built in Valencia in the late 1950s by architect Santiago Artal Ríos. In the complex, named Santa María Micaela, the relationships between formal components, principles of the Modern Movement and technical-constructive aspects are distinguishable, achieving a balance between the different technological-constructive, organizational-distributive, environmental-climatic and figurative-formal subsystems. In addition to the analysis of the structure and architecture, an analysis was carried out from the point of view of energy and climatic comfort of a typical apartment in the building in order to define how an architecture more than fifty years old meets the most modern housing standards and what the solutions might be in a possible energy upgrading project that first and foremost safeguards the architectural peculiarities of the structur

    Efficacia di sistemi drenanti nelle frane di argilla: influenza della permeabilità della banda di scorrimento

    La presente nota discute il funzionamento di interventi di stabilizzazione molto diffusi in frane a cinematica lenta che si sviluppano in terreni a grana fine: le trincee e i setti drenanti. In particolare, analizza l’influenza delle disomogeneità idrauliche che possono caratterizzare le grandi frane in argilla quali, in particolare, la diversa permeabilità della banda di scorrimento. Partendo dal caso di studio della frana di Costa della Gaveta, per la quale tale disomogeneità idraulica è stata ipotizzata sulla base di misure in sito e analisi numeriche dei suoi effetti sulle variazioni di pressioni interstiziali e velocità di spostamento, si riportano i risultati di analisi numeriche degli effetti di sistemi di trincee e setti drenanti in pendii caratterizzati da permeabilità molto basse del corpo di frana (kl) e della formazione stabile (kf), e da una permeabilità della banda di scorrimento (ksz) maggiore di vari ordini di grandezza. Il modello utilizzato riproduce, con una geometria semplificata, condizioni realistiche per l’Appennino italiano. Le analisi sono state effettuate con il software FEM SEEP3D, utilizzando inoltre la versione 2D, SEEP/W, per confronto. I risultati della modellazione 3D mostrano chiaramente che all’aumentare del rapporto ksz/kl diminuisce notevolmente l’efficacia di trincee drenanti la cui profondità sia minore di quella della superficie di scorrimento. Di conseguenza, un sistema drenante progettato senza tener conto delle peculiarità idrauliche della banda di scorrimento può risultare molto meno efficace di quanto auspicato. La nota discute, inoltre, i risultati di ulteriori analisi parametriche basate sul caso di studio dell’adiacente frana di Varco d’Izzo, il cui accumulo è attraversato da una galleria artificiale. Dalla base della galleria si diparte un sistema di dreni tubolari sub-orizzontali. Anche in queste condizioni, risulta fondamentale tener conto della maggiore permeabilità della banda di scorrimento per evitare di sopravvalutare l’effetto dei dreni

    Dual pathway inhibition versus antiplatelet therapy for “symptomatic” lower-extremities peripheral artery disease in diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials for the development of the Italian guidelines for the treatment of diabetic foot syndrome

    Background and aims: Dual pathway inhibition (DPI) with aspirin and low-dose rivaroxaban (LDR) has shown benefits in reducing major adverse cardiovascular (MACEs) and limb (MALEs) events in patients with lower extremity peripheral artery disease (LE-PAD). This study aimed to determine whether DPI is preferable to anti-platelet therapy alone in reducing adverse outcomes in diabetic patients with "symptomatic" LE-PAD and to assess the safety of DPI, specifically bleeding risks. The findings aim to support development of the Italian Guidelines for the Treatment of Diabetic Foot Syndrome. Methods: A Medline and Embase search was conducted through October 31, 2024, to identify RCTs comparing DPI with anti-platelet therapy in diabetic patients with symptomatic LE-PAD. Key efficacy outcomes included MALEs, MACE, and a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, acute limb ischemia, and major amputation. Safety outcomes primarily focused on major bleeding and fatal/critical organ bleeding. Mantel-Haenzel odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (MH-OR, 95%CI) were calculated. Results: From a total 153 items retrieved, 4 studies were assessed for eligibility; however only one study met the inclusion criteria for efficacy and safety outcomes component of the review. Due to lack of disaggregated data, efficacy and safety outcomes were estimated indirectly through proportional calculations. DPI demonstrated a reduced risk of MALEs [MH-OR 0.52; (95% CI 0.26–1.06)], MACE or MALE [MH-OR 0.67; (95% CI 0.45–1.00)], and the overall composite (MH-OR 0.70 [95% CI, 0.46–1.05]) compared to aspirin alone. A similar pattern was observed for MACE [MH-OR 0.70; (95% CI 0.44–1.11)]. While DPI did not significantly increase the risk of major or fatal/critical organ bleeding, a trend towards lower major bleeding rate in favor of aspirin was found. The net clinical benefit favored DPI (MH-OR 0.55 [95%CI, 0.36–0.84]). Conclusions: In diabetic patients with symptomatic LE-PAD, LDR plus aspirin is preferable to aspirin alone in reducing cardiovascular and limb outcomes, with acceptable bleeding risk
