    In the first few centuries of Christian era, the identity language of Jewish communities in the Diaspora was Greek, both in the East and in the West. Jewish inscriptions in the Venusia catacombs are written in Greek (60%), Latin (30%) and Hebrew (10%). Compared to the inscriptions of Rome, in the Venusian community there was an increase of the use of Latin at the expense of Greek. The present paper aims to discuss the significance of the use of Latin in Venusian inscriptions, with a focus on the Roman legal status of the Jews in late-Roman period, the economic conditions and political role played by them in Venusia and in Southern Italy between the fourth and sixth centuries CE
