"Loyal" to the community. Philosophy and psychology in Josiah Royce's «absolute pragmatism».

    No full text
This article explores Josiah Royce’s «absolute pragmatism», focusing on his epistemological and moral holism through the interaction of philosophy and psychology. It examines four key aspects: Royce’s reinterpretation of Kant, Fichte, and Hegel to highlight the construction of a holistic subject within the community; his concept of will as a «selective act», which addresses the problem of the ego’s freedom in relation to the necessity of nature; his engagement with Nietzsche’s subjectivism, through which he seeks to reconstruct objectivity by emphasizing loyalty to the community; and, finally, his dialogue with William James, culminating in an ethics of loyalty oriented toward an open and inclusive community. Therefore, Royce’s philosophy affirms both the mind’s interpretive capacities and the ethics of loyalty as the fulfillment of moral law and a unifying social principle

Search for vector-like leptons with long-lived particle decays in the CMS muon system in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV

    No full text
A first search is presented for vector-like leptons (VLLs) exclusively decaying into a light long-lived pseudoscalar boson and a standard model τ lepton. The pseudoscalar boson is assumed to have a mass below the τ+τ− threshold, so that it decays exclusively into two photons. It is identified using the CMS muon system. The analysis is carried out using a data set of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Selected events contain at least one pseudoscalar boson decaying electromagnetically in the muon system and at least one hadronically decaying τ lepton. No significant excess of data events is observed compared to the background expectation. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the vector-like lepton production cross section as a function of the VLL mass and the pseudoscalar boson mean proper decay length. The observed and expected exclusion ranges of the VLL mass extend up to 700 and 670 GeV, respectively, depending on the pseudoscalar boson lifetime

Spasticity patterns assessment and recognition for therapeutic approaches (SPARTA) in multiple sclerosis: a multicenter epidemiological study

    No full text
Background: Spasticity and muscle weakness are the most disabling symptoms in people with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS), frequently affecting lower limbs and causing motor impairments, fatigue and increased risk of falls. Previous epidemiological studies on pwMS reported prevalence of spasticity and other symptoms but scarce information is available about combined patterns of muscle weakness and spasticity, symmetry and regional localization. Objectives: To describe the prevalent combined patterns of muscle weakness and spasticity in pwMS in order to focus attention on their functional balance before spasticity treatment. Methods: pwMS with lower limb spasticity, 3.5 ≤ Expanded-Disability-Status Scale (EDSS) ≤ 6.5 were recruited. Data regarding muscle weakness and spasticity, symmetry and involvement of other functional systems were collected. Prevalence analysis was performed. Results: Three-hundred pwMS were included. Muscle weakness and spasticity occurred mostly asymmetrically with a prevalence of paraparesis. Incidence of both symptoms increase with higher EDSS, particularly of muscle weakness. Twelve prevalent combined patterns were identified, with highest incidence of combinations characterized by “distal-intermediate spasticity and diffuse weakness” (29.3%), “diffuse spasticity and weakness” (13.7%), “distal spasticity and diffuse weakness” (11.7%). Conclusions: This study highlighted the most prevalent combined patterns of weakness and spasticity, useful in clinical practice for pwMS’ assessment by supporting optimal planning of specific pharmacologic and rehabilitative treatments

A method for correcting the substructure of multiprong jets using the Lund jet plane

    No full text
Many analyses at the CERN LHC exploit the substructure of jets to identify heavy resonances produced with high momenta that decay into multiple quarks and/or gluons. This paper presents a new technique for correcting the substructure of simulated large-radius jets from multiprong decays. The technique is based on reclustering the jet constituents into several subjets such that each subjet represents a single prong, and separately correcting the radiation pattern in the Lund jet plane of each subjet using a correction derived from data. The data presented here correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 collected by the CMS experiment between 2016–2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The correction procedure improves the agreement between data and simulation for several different substructure observables of multiprong jets. This technique establishes, for the first time, a robust calibration for the substructure of jets with four or more prongs, enabling future measurements and searches for new phenomena containing these signatures

STATO FITOSANITARIO DELLA SEMENTE E VALORIZZAZIONE DI SEI ECOTIPI LOCALI DI FAGIOLO RAMPICANTE (ROSSO SCRITTO DEL PANTANO, MUNACHEDDA, MARRUCHEDDA, NASIEDDU, TUVAGLIEDDU E CU’ MUSSIDDU)

    No full text
Agri-Food By-Products as Ingredients: Exploring Purchase Intentions Among a Sample of Italian Consumers

    No full text
Consumer perceptions of upcycled foods, as well as the determinants of food choices, are still not well understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of psychological and personal traits on purchase intention (PI) towards upcycled foods of Italian consumers. Additionally, willingness to try (WTT), willingness to buy (WTB), and willingness to pay (WTP) for yogurt, bread, and biscuits made with by-products, namely, hazelnut skin and grape pomace powder, were collected. A web-based survey involving 505 consumers was conducted, and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to evaluate the model. It resulted that food neophobia and attitude towards upcycled foods had a significant impact on PI. In turn, attitude was affected by food neophobia as well as by objective knowledge about food by-products. Unexpectedly, frugality and environmental concern did not affect PI. WTP was product-specific; when WTP was compared to a reference price, it was higher for the yogurt prototype, followed by the bread and biscuits prototypes. Food neophobia affected WTT, WTB, and WTP. This study contributes to providing new insights into the determinants of consumers’ purchase intention for upcycled foods, which are an emerging category of products
