    Search for bottom quark associated production of the standard model Higgs boson in final states with leptons in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV

    This Letter presents the first search for bottom quark associated production of the standard model Higgs boson, in final states with leptons. Higgs boson decays to pairs of tau leptons and pairs of leptonically decaying W bosons are considered. The search is performed using data collected from 2016 to 2018 by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb−1. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the signal strength for Higgs boson production in association with bottom quarks; the observed (expected) upper limit is 3.7 (6.1) times the standard model prediction

    Regional Net Fiscal Balances in Italy at the Time of Enhanced Differentiated Autonomy

    This paper provides new evidence on regional and macro-regional Net Fiscal Balances (nfbs) in Italy and offers an assessment of the interregional redistributive action carried out by the public sector over the period 2000-2021. We find that the South and Islands regions exhibit substantial, persistent, and structural negative nfbs, while the North-West regions persistently display large positive nfbs. The North-East and Central regions occupy an intermediate position. Regional surpluses and deficits narrow during the financial and pandemic crises, possibly indicating reduced interregional redistribution during difficult times. Furthermore, a decreasing trend in the deficits of Southern regions emerges, possibly due to a declining progressivity of the Italian tax system and a persisting expenditure gap. Regarding redistribution intensity, public policies carry out a limited action, with a slight tendency toward a reduction of redistribution over time

    Enriching the physics program of the CMS experiment via data scouting and data parking

    Specialized data-taking and data-processing techniques were introduced by the CMS experiment in Run 1 of the CERN LHC to enhance the sensitivity of searches for new physics and the precision of standard model measurements. These techniques, termed data scouting and data parking, extend the data-taking capabilities of CMS beyond the original design specifications. The novel data-scouting strategy trades complete event information for higher event rates, while keeping the data bandwidth within limits. Data parking involves storing a large amount of raw detector data collected by algorithms with low trigger thresholds to be processed when sufficient computational power is available to handle such data. The research program of the CMS Collaboration is greatly expanded with these techniques. The implementation, performance, and physics results obtained with data scouting and data parking in CMS over the last decade are discussed in this Report, along with new developments aimed at further improving low-mass physics sensitivity over the next years of data taking

    This thesis addresses the conservation of rupestrian and hypogean cultural heritage, highlighting the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to manage and preserve such complex sites. The work develops along two continuously intersecting concepts: the disciplinary dialogue and a systemic vision for sustainable management. New methods of comparison are proposed, such as the ‘methodical vocabulary’ as a tool for understanding concepts related to rupestrian and hypogean architecture; of study, through a rapid spatial and morphological data survey method of collecting data; of approach, through the analysis of international case studies. The thesis proposes two applicative case studies: the rupestrian church of San Nicola dei Greci in Matera and the Ipogeo dei Cristallini in Naples. In the former, the 3D Scanner application for smartphones is used to create measurable 3D models, while in the latter, a conservation management model is proposed thanks to the site's compensation capacity - its ability to naturally balance and respond to degradation factors - which is determined through systematic conservation monitoring. The pictorial decorations and architectural elements of both sites are analysed in detail, leading to new and unprecedented iconographic and technical interpretations and highlighting the role of conservation in the study and understanding of the meanings stratified in the material. This work also suggests the use of traditional materials such as aged lime putty for consolidation interventions and highlights best practices for an economical and effective conservation. Finally, it offers a paradigm shift, seeing the fragility of these sites not as a limitation, but as an opportunity for more conscious preventive and planned conservation

    Genes involved in lipid, carbohydrate and protein metabolic processes located in QTL regions affecting pork meat flavor

    Pork flavor is a complex trait whose variability depends on both genetic and environmental factors affecting quantity and quality of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids present in meat. In the last twenty years, 99 Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) associated with the variability of the different pork flavor traits (Flavor score, Umami flavor, Overall liking, Juiciness score, Oiliness and Off-flavor score) were identified with different coverage percentages across all Sus scrofa chromosomes. In this review we summarize the available data on QTLs affecting pork flavor and update their location according to the latest version (11.1) of Sscrofa Genome Assembly. Furthermore, by means of Gene Ontology (GO) analysis of genes located in these QTL regions, we identified 107 genes involved in lipid, protein and carbohydrate metabolic processes, which could be considered as candidate genes affecting the variability of flavor traits

    Robust Satellite Techniques for thermal monitoring of seismically active areas: main findings and methodological advances

    Over the past decades, long-term studies have been conducted to investigate the potential spatial-temporal correlations between anomalies in Earth’s thermally emitted infrared (TIR) radiation and earthquake occurrence. These investigations have utilized TIR data acquired from both geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites across several seismically active regions worldwide. The Robust Satellite Technique (RST), applied to ultra-decadal TIR data across different seismic contexts, has enabled the identification of Significant Sequences of TIR Anomalies (SSTAs) potentially associated with impending earthquakes. These anomalies are rare (<0.05% of the analyzed space-time domain) and exhibit a false positive rate of approximately 25%, varying by region. Molchan error diagram analyses support a non-random correlation between SSTAs and the occurrence of seismic events. However, the RETIRA (Robust Estimator of TIR Anomalies) index, previously used for anomaly detection, suffers from limitations due to its reliance on large-scale thermal background estimations, which are sensitive to meteorological cloud cover. To address this, a novel indicator—RETIRSA (Robust Estimator of TIR Slope Anomalies)—has been developed, enabling local-scale filtering of transient warming events without large-scale averaging. This study presents a critical review of the main findings and methodological advancements gained during the past twenty years of research. In particular, we discuss the results obtained through the application of the RST to long-term (>10 years) TIR datasets from geostationary sensors, including SEVIRI (onboard MSG) over Greece, Italy, and Turkey, and JAMI and IMAGER (onboard MTSAT satellites) over Japan, as well as the preliminary results achieved by using the RETIRSA index in recent earthquake worldwide

    Estimating flash flood surface flow velocity in heritage city using citizen-recorded videos

    Urban flash floods pose significant threats to public safety, infrastructure, and urban resilience. Accurate and rapid assessment of flood flow velocities is essential for effective hazard monitoring and response. However, public awareness of flood risks often remains low, especially regarding the rapid impact of shallow waters on human safety. To address this challenge, this study leverages citizen-recorded videos to estimate flood flow velocities, supporting improved hazard assessment. Focusing on Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage city in southern Italy (Basilicata Region), known for its steep topography and historic “Sassi” districts, the study analyzes five recent flood events (August 24, 2018; November 12, 2019; June 2, 2023; July 2, 2024; and July 21, 2024) using eight citizen-sourced videos, primarily from social media platforms. These videos captured the surface flow along Via Buozzi, a key historic drainage path in the downtown area. Flow velocities were estimated using Fudaa-LSPIV, an image-based particle image velocimetry method adapted for video analysis. The accuracy of these estimates was validated against measurements obtained with SSIMS-Flow, an optical flow software tool, as well as benchmark data derived from floating debris, such as leaves and trash, visually detectable in the videos. The comparison revealed a strong correlation and close agreement between all methods. Results demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed approach for estimating surface velocities during urban flash floods. The accompanying datasets, included both in the manuscript and in the supplementary material, offer valuable resources for calibration, validation hydrodynamic modelling and, ultimately, advancing flood risk assessment and management in urban contexts such as heritage city
