Italian consumers and cultured meat: Risk, preferences, and politics
Cultured meat is produced in vitro, and it is presented as a method able to reduce the controversial effect of farmed meat, on the environment and animal welfare. To speed up the shift to sustainable food systems with such innovation, it is necessary to analyze consumer preferences and attitudes towards this novel food. Attention should be paid specifically to the relevant role of consumers’ political affiliation, risk attitudes, and perceptions of cultured meat, as compared to farmed meat, on consumers’ acceptance of this novel food. This study investigates these aspects using a representative sample of the Italian population in terms of gender, age, and region, and a balance across education levels. Data collection was conducted via a digital platform in December 2023. The sample included 800 participants. The data were analyzed using an ordered logistic regression model, with marginal effects reported for clarity. Results show that as the level of acceptance increases, consumers’ preferences depend heavily on their’ perceptions of cultured meat as compared to farmed meat. Our research offers valuable insights into consumers’ views related to cultured meat. Additionally, it provides practical guidance to promote cultured meat using an evidence-based strategy
The fate of marginalized maritime communities in the development of tourism. Governance Challenges of Natural Protected Areas in the Surin and Lipe Islands, Thailand,
Natural protected areas on islands often face a dual challenge: safeguarding coastal communities at risk of displacement from their marine environments, while simultaneously fostering their empowerment by cultivating productive relationships—particularly with incoming tourists.
The chapter examines this challenge looking at two insular, natural protected areas in Thailand. Starting from a reflection on the political and legal partitioning of the oceans, the analysis extends to the transition between land and sea for these communities. It maintains a a particular focus on island contexts as unique spaces where the ideological construction of the land-sea divide is revealed. Following an examination of tourism in Thailand in relation to the political and cultural promotion of the concept of 'Thainess' (being Thai), the chapter discusses findings from research on two case studies of indigenous communities residing within Thailand’s national parks—the Moken of the Surin Islands and the Urak Lawoi of Lipe Island in the Andaman Sea. This contribution draws on ethnographic observations and qualitative data gathered during fieldwork conducted between January and March 20242. In conclusion, broader reflections will be offered on the lessons that these case studies provide for a maritime and oceanic sociological approach to emerging issues, framed within the perspective of political ecology in the Mediterranean as a potential global mode
Structural dissection of three transition states along the folding pathway of PDZ6 from PDZD2
: The cooperative nature of protein folding limits the experimental dissection of the reaction mechanism. PDZ domains, with conserved folds, numerous homologs, and accessible folding intermediates, offer an ideal model to study folding pathways. Here, we present a detailed structural and kinetic characterization of the folding pathway of PDZ6 from PDZD2. Using kinetic folding experiments under different salt conditions combined with φ-value analysis, we revealed a complex energy landscape for PDZ6, featuring three distinct transition states (TS1-TS3) and the progressive acquisition of native-like structure along the reaction coordinate. Taking advantage of the large number of homologous PDZ domains, we compared φ-values at conserved structural positions with those previous obtained for PDZ3 of PSD-95 and PDZ2 of PTP-BL. This analysis revealed a shared, conserved folding mechanism among PDZ domains, in which the central β-strands act as nucleation cores for folding. Overall, this work provides the first structural dissection of the three transition states governing PDZ6 folding and highlights a conserved, hierarchical folding mechanism among PDZ domains. These findings expand our understanding of PDZ folding principles and may inform studies on their functional modulation and evolutionary adaptation
