Ritorno all’interpretatio nominis? Strategie di nominazione in alcuni romanzi italiani di oggi
This essay highlights a sustained metalinguistic focus on onomastic strategies, as well as a deliberate interpretatio nominis, in Alessandro D’Avenia’s novel L’appello (2020). This phenomenon is likewise evident in the corpus of Premio Strega laureates, most notably in Sandro Veronesi’s Il Colibrì (2019). Possible interpretative frameworks include: a symbolic significance ascribed to proper names in contemporary cultural consciousness; a deliberate emphasis on the work’s metanarrative structure; or, alternatively, a certain stylistic impoverishment accompanied by an orientation toward an inexperienced Implied Reader
Meeting No Ordinary Woman. An Interview
This interview with historian, playwright, and curator Sinéad McCoole explores the cultural, historical, and imaginative reverberations of Brexit from an Irish perspective, foregrounding questions of memory, identity, borders, and narrative authority. Drawing on McCoole’s interdisciplinary practice – spanning historiography, theatre, exhibition-making, and public scholarship – the conversation situates Brexit within longer trajectories of Irish-British relations, postcolonial identity, and the unfinished legacies of Partition. McCoole reflects on the symbolic and lived meanings of borders, the renewed salience of the island as a shared yet divided space, and the ways in which Brexit has reactivated debates surrounding sovereignty, citizenship, and belonging, particularly in relation to Northern Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement.
The interview highlights the distinctive role of literature, theatre, and the arts in mediating political rupture, emphasising drama’s capacity to personalise historical complexity, cultivate empathy, and document change in real time. Special attention is given to women as narrators of history, the ethics of cultural memory, the significance of language and cadence in Irish storytelling, and the evolving position of Ireland within a European and global cultural framework. Ultimately, the conversation positions Brexit as a critical moment of transformation that has contributed to a renewed confidence in Irish cultural identity, while underscoring the arts’ enduring function as both archive and agent of social reflection in periods of profound political change
Salt-Induced Changes in the Phenolic Content of Melon F2 Offspring Sprouts Obtained from Fruit Deseeding
This study investigated the phytochemical content of melon sprouts obtained from by-product seeds of fruit processing and the elicitation effect obtained by the application of salinity to the growing substrate. Seeds from two melon Cultivars (Thales and SV9424ML) were sprouted at 0, 12.5, 25, and 50 mM NaCl concentrations (Salt). Due to intra-lot seed variability in germination speed, sprouts were harvested at 1 and 2 weeks after sowing (WAS), included as an experimental factor (Harvest), collecting, at each harvest, only those that had reached the ready-to-eat stage. Seed germination, shoot and root lengths, fresh and dry weights, and their content in phenolic compounds were determined. Cultivar, Harvest, and Cultivar × Harvest interaction affected sprout phenolic compound content more than Salt. In general, Thales exhibited a significantly greater phenolic compound content (+67.9%, on average). Harvest influenced phytochemicals, with sprouts at 2WAS exhibiting lower flavonoid and hydroxybenzoic acid levels (−31.3% and −73.0%, respectively), yet higher hydroxycinnamic acid content (+298.6%). This was a consequence of variations in p-coumaric and ferulic acids at 2WAS and in flavonoids at 1WAS. Moreover, Salt had an appreciable effect only on Thales, at moderate levels (25 mM NaCl). Our results suggest that the sprouting of by-product seeds of vegetables should be finely modulated based on the seed intra-lot variability in germination speed and on cultivar responsiveness to salinity for phytochemical elicitation
The Association Between the Dark Triad and Political Trust: The Mediating Role of Conspiracy Beliefs
This study investigates the mediating role of conspiracy beliefs in the association between the Dark Triad (Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) and political trust. A sample of 212 participants (meanage = 31.83 years; SDage = 13.85 years; 106 females) completed self-report measures assessing the Dark Triad, conspiracy beliefs across five domains (government malfeasance, malevolent global conspiracies, extraterrestrial cover-up, personal well-being, and control of information), and political trust. Mediation analyses revealed that government malfeasance, malevolent global conspiracies, and control of information significantly mediated the association between the Dark Triad and political trust. These findings clarify the psychological mechanisms linking malevolent and antagonistic personality traits to institutional distrust, underscoring the pivotal role of specific conspiracy beliefs in shaping political attitudes. Beyond advancing theoretical understanding, the results suggest that interventions aimed at reducing susceptibility to conspiracy beliefs may help counteract personality-driven erosion of political trust. Limitations and avenues for future research are discussed

Microbiota characterization and in vitro assessment of the anti-inflammatory activity of Kefir
Kefir is a widely recognized health-promoting fermented beverage, produced through the symbiotic activity of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), acetic acid bacteria (AAB) and yeasts. This study aimed at characterizing the microbial kefir’s community and to assess its potential anti- inflammatory properties at the intestinal level. To this end, a comparison was made between a commercially kefir and a lab-scale artisanal kefir, including its associated grains. To quantify the microbial populations, both culture-dependent and culture-independent methods (qPCR) were employed. Following microbial profiling, the study further explored the potential anti- inflammatory effects of the kefir samples by evaluating the expression of inflammation-related genes in an inflamed intestinal epithelial cell model (NCM460). Specifically, the expression levels of cytokines involved in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), namely IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, IL-17A, and IL-23, were measured after exposure to the different kefir samples, subjected to a simulated in vitro digestion (INFOGEST). Microbial analysis revealed a higher abundance of LAB and yeasts in both the artisanal kefir beverage and its grains, compared to commercial kefir. Moreover, other bacteria such as Leuconostoc spp. and Acetobacter spp., as well as the yeasts Pichia kluyveri and Saccharomyces spp. were detected, underscoring the microbial diversity of these samples. Interestingly, the artisanal kefir beverage and its associated grains exhibited a greater ability to reduce the expression of pro- inflammatory cytokines compared to commercial kefir, showing a significant anti- inflammatory potential. Overall, these findings support the hypothesis that kefir’s microbial composition contributes to its anti-inflammatory effects on the intestinal epithelium. The observed anti-inflammatory activity highlights the need for further research into the specific microorganisms and metabolites responsible for this bioactivity, which could ultimately guide the development of targeted functional food formulations aimed at gut health and inflammation management
