Proposal of a Synthetic Measure of (E)Quality of Life Satisfaction: A Regional Perspective on Gender Disparities in Italy
The relationship between gender and quality of life satisfaction is a complex issue with mixed findings. Some studies have found that women are more satisfied with their lives than men, whereas in others men are more satisfied. In this study, we investigated the gender disparities in quality of life satisfaction in the Italian regions. Using data from the multipurpose survey on households, Aspects of Daily Life by Istat, this study built a synthetic index of gender disparity in quality of life satisfaction through the AMPI methodology. This index facilitates spatial and temporal comparisons across Italian regions from 2018 to 2022, aiming to identify changes influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Balancing sustainability and circular justice: The challenge of the energy transition
The shift to renewable energy is no longer an option but a critical need for addressing climate change. Nevertheless, it frequently culminates in exacerbating existing socioeconomic disparities, disproportionately affecting already vulnerable communities. This study examines the intersection of the circular economy (CE), the energy transition, and justice concerns through a literature review of 169 publications. By employing a comprehensive approach to analyse the environmental and social implications of renewable energy generation, distribution, and waste treatment, it advocates for circular justice as a framework to mitigate the disparities that arise from such a shift. The findings emphasise the necessity of an inclusive strategy that incorporates distributive, procedural, and recognitional justice into circular energy practices. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of developing evaluation tools that balance sustainability with social equity, thereby promoting a decarbonised future that is equitable for all, globally inclusive, and resilient. Policymakers and industry leaders should advocate for social frameworks that guarantee equitable participation and outcomes, moving beyond an exclusive focus on resource efficiency. Looking ahead, future research should concentrate on advancing technologies that support sustainable, inclusive energy transitions on a global scale. Aligning technological innovation with justice is essential to ensure that the transition to a carbon-free future benefits all, particularly those who have been historically marginalised
Horizontal Accuracy Tests on Google Satellite Images Over Naples Added in QGIS
The possibility of view Google satellite images in Geographic Information System (GIS) provides an important source of information for free to support applications regarding smart cities. In fact, Google makes available, practically for every place on Earth, updated and high-resolution images: it is necessary to ascertain that the data accuracy is compatible with the application you want to create. Consequently, it becomes necessary to verify that the coordinates of objects easily identifiable in the images are sufficiently accurate for the purpose. This article aims to verify the horizontal positional accuracy of the Google satellite images in the municipality of Naples (Italy). For this purpose, the 1:1,000 scale maps georeferenced in the UTM WGS84 system, zone 33 North are used. The satellite images, georeferenced in the WGS84 system and in the WEB Mercator representation, are also reported in the same system and projection as the maps. Due to the imperfect overlap between the layers, the deviations are measured in some points that are easily identifiable both on the maps and the satellite images. As found with the use of 45 check points, the deviations have a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.594 m highlighting a wide range of possible applications
Crowdfunding business models through the lens of sustainable development: A taxonomy for backers and funders
Sustainable entrepreneurship has emerged as a key driver in addressing environmental and societal challenges through innovation. However, sustainable ventures often struggle to secure funding due to the perceived trade-off between financial returns and sustainability goals. This paper, through a systematic literature review, proposes a taxonomy of crowdfunding (CF) business models linking backers' motivations to the environmental, social and governance (ESG) dimensions of the projects. This taxonomy, highlighting the importance of aligning CF business model with the specific sustainable project objectives, offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to effectively support their innovative and sustainable ideas through a strategically appropriate approach
Soft bottom benthic communities under potentially anthropic and natural pressures in Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea, Antarctica)
Benthic communities have a key function in the Antarctic marine ecosystem since they play a central role in the food web pathway and represent the main “environmental biological memory”. The goal of the study is to evaluate differences in macrozoobenthic community structure, along the Antarctic coasts of Tethys Bay (Ross Sea), potentially affected by two types of pressures: anthropic, due to the presence of a scientific station, and natural, due to the presence of a penguin colony. In the austral summer of 2017/2018 and 2018/2019, four sites were sampled in order to detect the effects of these two types of pressure (anthropic vs. natural vs. two control non-impacted areas). The Road Bay site, near the Italian Station, is rich in macro- and micronutrients and NO3− and Cd2+; the Adélie Cove site, characterized by organic loads from a close penguin colony, is rich in PO43−. Lower values of NO3− and PO43−, as well as Cu2+ and Pb2+ heavy metals occurred in control sites, between Road Bay and Adélie Cove. The benthic community showed different qualitative–quantitative dominances of species among sites, mainly at 50 m depth. The results clearly show the dominance of different opportunistic species of macrobenthos where penguins or humans’ presence occurred. Therefore, benthic communities may be considered good biological indicators of the overall environmental conditions
