In-Flight UAVs Polarimetric Radar Cross-Section Measurement and Statistical Analysis at X- and L-Bands
The paper introduces a carefully designed experiment based on professional radar hardware setup to collect X- and quad-pol L-bands radar data in a rural area during the simultaneous flight of a commercial and a professional-grade drone. After the definition of a procedure to retrieve the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) Radar Cross-Section (RCS) from the gathered measurements, the research has been focused on how the statistical behavior of the RCS depends on radar frequency, polarization configuration, and drone type. The analysis is based on the evaluation of the Empirical Cumulative Distribution Function (ECDF) of the normalized RCS and its comparison with different theoretical models whose goodness of fit is assessed using the Cramér-von Mises (CVM) distance. In addition, dispersion metrics such as standard deviation, interquartile range, full range, and box-and-whisker plots are employed to provide a quantitative measure of the variability of the RCS under different operating conditions. The results show that, regardless of the frequency band, each UAV conforms to a distinct RCS fluctuation model. Moreover, for a given UAV, the best-fitting pattern changes depending on frequency and polarization. These variations reflect both the different structural characteristics of the UAVs and the frequency/polarization dependence of the RCS, as the scatterers that compose the drone may respond differently depending on the frequency/polarization
Analytical and numerical properties of an extended angiogenesis PDEs model
This paper presents an extended mathematical model for tumor angiogenesis incorporating oxygen dynamics as a main regulator. We enhance a five-component PDE system describing endothelial cells, proteases, inhibitors, extracellular matrix, and oxygen concentration, with a focus on their spatiotemporal interactions. We establish existence, uniqueness, and boundedness of solutions through a mathematical analysis. A numerical scheme using method of lines and fourth-order Runge-Kutta methods is developed, with proven stability constraints and convergence properties. Numerical experiments demonstrate biologically plausible vascular formation with oxygen-mediated regulation
Safety aspects in the Italian regions: the gender equality regional index
Using a multidimensional approach, the aim of this work is to investigate the gap between gender equality and safety aspects, including perception (subjective elements) and victims of crime (objective elements). From two different data sources, five core indicators were selected. The study analyses the differences at the Italian regional level, assessing the possible effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on safety. Therefore, we considered a period from 2018 to 2022 with the years 2020/2021 as affected by pandemic. For the construction of the index, a ratio was constructed for each indicator to quantify gender inequality in relation to each selected aspect. In all regions and throughout the period under review, men consistently report a higher perception of safety than women, with some local variations. Finally, the Gender Equality Regional Index (GERI) was built for this domain. The results show no major differences at regional level
An Ultrasound Prototype for Remote Hand Movement Sensing: The Finger Tapping Case
In the context of neurodegenerative diseases, finger tapping is a gold-standard test used by clinicians to evaluate the severity of the condition. The finger tapping test involves repetitive tapping between the index finger and thumb. Subjects affected by neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, often exhibit symptoms like bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremor. As a result, when these individuals perform the finger tapping task, instability in both the tap rate and finger displacement can be observed. Currently, clinicians assess bradykinesia by visually observing the patient’s finger tapping movements and qualitatively rating their severity. In this work, we present a novel ultrasound contactless system that provides quantitative measurements of finger tapping, including tap rate and finger displacements. The system functions as an ultrasound sonar capable of measuring the Doppler spectrum of waves reflected by the hand. From this spectrum, various characteristics of the hand movement can be extracted through appropriate processing techniques. Specifically, by performing time–frequency analysis and applying specialized data processing, tapping rates and finger displacements can be estimated. The system has been tested in real-world scenarios involving volunteer finger tapping sessions, demonstrating its potential for accurately measuring both tap rates and displacements
