    Differential uplift of late Pleistocene Marine Terraces at the western and eastern coasts of the Laconic Peninsula, SE Greece

    This study investigates the uplifted marine terraces along the western and eastern coasts of the Laconic Peninsula in an attempt to reconstruct the region’s Late Pleistocene tectonic and geomorphological history. Using high-resolution topography, GIS analysis and extensive field surveys, the research mapped and characterized sequences of marine terraces in three distinct sectors. The analysis identified a sequence of eight terraces in Sector A and six in Sector B on the western coast, with five lower-elevation terraces in Sector C on the eastern coast. The marked difference in terrace elevation and number between the adjacent Sectors A (higher) and B (lower) is attributed to differential uplift caused by the active Molai graben. By correlating the lowest terrace in Sector B (at 9–10 m a.s.l.) with the MIS 5a terrace in the adjacent Punta area based on a previous study, a long-term average uplift rate of 0.36 ± 0.11 mm a−1 over the past 215 ± 5.5 ka is established for Sector B. Assuming this constant rate, the research tentatively correlated the higher terraces in Sector B with successive Quaternary highstands: MIS 5c (Terrace B, 15–21 m a.s.l.), MIS 7a (Terrace D, 55–65 m a.s.l.), and MIS 7c (Terrace E, 80–90 m a.s.l.). These correlations are consistent with predicted elevations derived from global sea-level curves. The results confirm that the regional coastal uplift is driven by the overall proximity to the Hellenic Subduction Zone, while local variations are controlled by active normal faulting

    A single SAR image-based approach to analyse the dynamics of Terra Nova Bay polynya

    In recent decades, Antarctica has been undergoing a wide range of fast environmental changes. The sea ice covering the Southern Ocean not only reacts rapidly to these changes, but also influences and alters the physical properties of the atmospheric boundary layer and the underlying ocean on various scales. In that regard, polynyas, i.e. regions of open water and thin ice within the closed pack ice, play a key role as being regions of enhanced atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions and extensive new ice formation during winter. The experimental analysis is based on a series of Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) acquisitions collected in single-polarization mode, during both the expansion and contraction stages of the Terra Nova Bay polynya. These data are complemented by auxiliary observations from passive microwave instruments. In this study, preliminary results show that the ability of a single SAR scene to identify the open polynya growing and closing phases. Further analysis will be provided by the time of the conference

    Il contesto che fa da sfondo all’esperienza di accoglienza-integrazione, di cui il presente scritto riferisce, è Procida. Procida è una piccola isola di soli 4 km quadrati, parte dell’arcipelago del golfo di Napoli insieme alle più note Ischia e Capri. L’isola è separata dalla terra ferma dal canale di Procida, un braccio di mare di poche miglia che bagna i due versanti dell’area flegrea. In questo lembo di terra vulcanica dal 2019 si è cominciato ad accogliere migranti a seguito della nascita del «Progetto AIDA Accoglienza Isola Di Arturo» realizzato grazie al Sistema di Protezione per Richiedenti Asilo e Rifugiati, finanziato dal Ministero dell’Interno, Dipartimento Libertà Civili, e Promosso dal Comune di Procida insieme alla Società Cooperativa LESS Lotta Contro l’Esclusione Sociale

    Comparison of frequency domain models for assessing the harmonic emissions of low voltage photovoltaic systems

    The proliferation of photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to low voltage (LV) distribution networks can have detrimental impacts on waveform distortion. This is caused by the power electronic interface, with voltage source converter (VSC) technology being by far the most prevalent. As such, proper emission models, which can account for the non-linear operation of VSCs used in PV systems have to be developed and investigated for the assessment of harmonic distortion in LV networks. This paper compares different frequency domain models (FDMs), specifically, methods based on frequency coupling matrices and an analytical method based on a harmonically coupled impedance matrix, for the type of single-phase PV systems typically found in LV distribution networks. Two case studies are presented to compare the models in terms of computational complexity and accuracy, with results showing that models accounting for the interaction between same order harmonics are sufficiently accurate

    Supporting the diffusion of innovative SMEs: the Italian experience

    Innovative SMEs are believed to be of fundamental importance for a territorial context’s social and economic development. Countries have adopted many policies to favour the diffusion of innovative SMEs, even if the results often appear contradictory. This study verifies the effectiveness of a specific decree-law encouraging entrepreneurs to open up their businesses to systematic innovations by analysing the financial and economic performances obtained by 617 innovative SMEs in the five-year period 2016–2020. Findings reveal that most SMEs who benefited from the measures envisaged by the decree achieved an acceptable situation, with valid profitability and a bearable financial and economic balance. The main implication of this study is that the polarisation of support measures on the enhancement of human resource skills can be at least as important as sources for access to financial resources

    Driving SDG15: The Role of HEIs in BiodiversityConservation Through Digitalization and Reporting

    Education, research, and public engagement are key strategies guiding European higher education institutions (HEIs) in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through stakeholder, legitimacy, and resource-based view theories, this study examines the contributions of HEIs to saving Life on Land (SDG15), focusing on the role of digital technologies and Partnerships (SDG17) in biodiversity conservation. Despite interest in biodiversity conservation and the adoption of digital technologies in HEIs, knowledge about SDG15 issues is still limited. A double-level content analysis through Leximancer v.5 and manual analysis was performed on 653 documents (191 sustainability reports and 462 website pages) from 50 European HEIs published between 2018 and 2024. The results highlight the key role of SDG17 and digital technologies in supporting biodiversity conservation efforts but also reveal a lack of standardized reporting frameworks, underscoring the need for a unified European approach to biodiversity disclosure to ensure more consistent and impactful contributions toward the SDGs. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to address knowledge gaps on biodiversity practices supported by digitalization and partnerships, as adopted and shared through sustainability reporting by the top 50 universities leading in land conservation in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2024 ranking

    Emergency Department Departures: Untangling the Complexities of Early Exits in a Large Italian region

    Leaving Emergency Departments (ED) early is an important failure of these structures, constituting a risk for the health of the people who renounce the benefits of such healthcare, and a cost to the countries that finance healthcare service for their citizens. In order to implement actions to reduce the extent of this failure, an understanding of the characteristics of patients who leave EDs early is needed. This research scrutinizes the determinants of early ED departure in the hospitals of the region of Campania, Italy, where around a tenth of the Italian population lives. We adopt a quantitative framework, utilizing a novel robust dataset of about 1,000,000 observations, employing both Probit and Logit estimators. Our analysis reveals that factors including being a woman, having Italian citizenship, arriving by ambulance, severity of condition, and reporting a trauma, are associated with decreased probability of premature ED departure, while residing in high-income municipalities and being under 65 correlate with an increased likelihood of early leaving. The value of this information for policymakers and healthcare providers is discussed
