Language and critical thinking at the secondary school level in Italy: The impact of CLIL
No full textWhile critical thinking is becoming gradually more important in education, memorisation of rules, procedures and facts is still predominant. Italy has undergone a moderate level of innovation over the last two decades. Despite this, rote-learning strategies appear to be the norm at secondary education level (Vincent-Lancrin et al., 2019). This paper examines whether the currently compulsory CLIL activity, with its focus on higher-order thinking skills (Coyle et al., 2010), has had a beneficial impact on learning in Italian secondary education. More specifically, teachers’ current practices and students’ reactions to them
after the official CLIL implementation are discussed, through analysis of data collected from 1,343 respondents to a questionnaire distributed throughout the country. The findings align with the thinking-centered, integrative nature of the approach advanced by CLIL scholars, providing evidence both of the success of CLIL teacher training measures in the Italian context and of further cognitive achievements stemming from CLIL activity. However, critical considerations of the need to update assessment measures in light of these findings are included

No full textFlood-Hazard Assessment in the Messapios River Catchment (Central Evia Island, Greece) by Integrating GIS-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process
No full textThis study presents a comprehensive flood-hazard assessment and mapping of the Messapios River catchment in Evia Island, Greece, utilizing a combination of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and Geographic Information Systems (GISs). Flood-prone zones were identified based on five critical factors, which were determined to be the most influential in the watercourse when excessive discharge overwhelms the drainage network’s capacity: slope, elevation, proximity to stream channels, geological formations, and land cover. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was applied to assign weights to these factors, while the final flood-hazard map was generated using the Weighted Linear Combination (WLC) method. The analysis revealed that 17.8% of the catchment, approximately 39 km2, falls within a very high flood-hazard zone, while 18.02% (38.91 km2) is classified as highly susceptible to flooding. The flood-prone areas are concentrated in the central, southern, and western parts of the study area, particularly at the lower reaches of the catchment, on both sides of the main streams’ channels, and within the gently sloping, low-lying fan delta of the river. The study area has high exposure to flood hazards due to the significant population of approximately 9000 residents living within the flood-prone zones, a fact that contributes to the area’s potential vulnerability. Additionally, critical infrastructure, including five industrial facilities, the Psachna General High School, the local Public Power Corporation substation, about 21 km of the road network, and 21 bridges are located within the zones classified as having high and very high flood-hazard levels. Furthermore, about 35 km2 of economically vital agricultural areas (such as parts of the Psachna and Triada plains) are situated in highly and very highly prone to floods zones. MCDA proved to be an effective and reliable approach for assessing and mapping flood-hazard distribution in the Messapios River catchment. No full textThe paper aims to examine the evolution of economic and commercial networks in the red coral (Corallium rubrum) sector through a historical analysis of the firms operating within it. The red coral sector is investigated by considering its historical evolution in the Italian peninsula, from the modern to the contemporary age, to highlight firms developing network processes and expanded value creation paths. In particular, the focus has been identified in the production district of Torre del Greco, a city in Campania with a centuries-old history and tradition linked to the coral resource, recognised as the main center for manufacturing and trading in Italy. This research follows an interpretative methodological approach. After reviewing-from an evolutionary perspective – the business literature on firm networks and the related value creation paths, the study discusses relevant historical documents on the red coral sector housed in the National Library of Naples. The documentary investigation is enriched by accessing the historical archives of some-still active-firms of Torre del Greco and by discussion with entrepreneurs and sector associations. The analysis reveals a lack of studies investigating the evolution of this sector from a strategic, organisational, and competitive perspective. In this sense, the research contributes to understanding ancient commercial and accounting practices and organisational structures related to the red coral sector on the Italian peninsula. The analysis of the ancient production district of Torre del Greco in the 19th century allows to identify the key players-already organised into hubs and sub-hubs-of the coral sector network and to analyse how the value creation process was organised, by highlighting the close link between the coral resource and the economic development of the territory. Furthermore, the research can offer current research insights related to the topics of sustainability and digitisation. Indeed, historical research can guide in understanding the challenges currently facing the coral industry in terms of preserving and protecting the marine habitat and introducing digital technologies in harvesting, processing, and sales processes
CLUSTERING ANALYSIS OF THE YOUTH GUARANTEE PROGRAM: INSIGHTS INTO NEET REDUCTION ACROSS EU MEMBER STATES
No full textThis study investigates the changes in the labour market conditions and youth disengagement in a selection of 34 European countries from 2014 to 2023. The period under examination is very interesting because it starts in the year when most European Union countries introduced the Youth Guarantee (YG), that is a set of active labour market measures finalized to stimulate young NEETs (Young people Not in Employment, Education, or Training) to enter into the labour market. More in particular, through cluster analysis, we identified two different sets of clusters, one for youth disengagement and the other for the general labour market conditions. Results show great disparities across European countries for youth engagement levels, labour market conditions, and different dynamics over time. However, some countries show strong improvement across time in terms of youth engagement, while others, even among the richest ones, experienced an increase in poverty rate. The study offers policy recommendations tailored to each cluster to strengthen YG’s capacity to support youth inclusion in education and employment

This book unravels the complexities of carbon control practices, offering insights into financial, operational, and sustainable dimensions. From the challenges of sustainability transitions and technology adoption to utilize renewable resources and disclosing decarbonization practices, the book explores the critical role of accounting tools and international regulatory frameworks like the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the European Union Green Deal, and Paris Agreement as organizational collective responsibility in shaping a sustainable future. By incorporating stakeholder, stewardship, legitimacy, institutional, and resource dependency theories, the book bridges gaps in academic research and offers a fresh perspective on decarbonization in the hydrogen sector. The qualitative methodology provides a unified vision from strategies to implementation, guiding companies toward the contribution of the carbon neutrality goal in the hydrogen economy while ensuring accountability for their actions, conduct, and sustainability reporting
