    Sustainability-Linked Trade Credit and Inventory Strategies in Supply Chains: An Integrated Modeling Approach

    Despite the growing research on sustainability, exactly how sustainability and trade credits are linked in the supply chain (SC) is still unclear. Therefore, this study aims to bridge this gap by examining how both supplier and retailer sustainability-linked strategies and investment decisions influence trade credit terms, inventory decisions, and overall SC sustainability performance. We developed an integrated mathematical model that includes product deterioration, sustainability-linked investments, sustainability practices, financial dynamics, and partial backlogging to evaluate how these aspects affect overall integrated SC sustainability. With the help of numerical experiments and concavity analysis, the results confirm that moderate-to-high sustainability investments with coordinated credit terms significantly improve both environmental and financial sustainability. The study confirms the strong influence of preservation technology and sustainability practices in minimizing product deterioration and supporting longer inventory cycles, even under stockout risk. The retailer's sustainability efforts can enhance demand, lessen waste, and lessen credit default risk, indicating higher total profit for the supplier, and trade credit terms can be a strategic tool to promote and incentivize sustainability practices. The inclusion of partial backlogging with sustainability efforts can foster SC coordination and customer service levels. Moreover, concavity analysis validates the robustness of the model, providing a reliable strategic decision-making tool to enhance sustainability across both upstream and downstream SCs, address inventory overstocking and understocking issues, optimize trade credit contracts, and improve the overall sustainability of the SC

    Past coastal evolution indicates low resilience of Mediterranean coastal plains to ongoing climate change

    Global sea-level rise represents one of the most evident impacts of anthropogenic climate change. It is expected to trigger widespread environmental changes, such as major coastal erosion and progressive inundation of large portions of low-elevated coastal zones. Such impacts will be of remarkable importance in the most vulnerable coastal areas, such as large alluvial plains. However, is it possible to define a common response for this type of coastal environment to climate change? Furthermore, what are the drivers that mostly control their evolution? We evaluate the potential resilience of six major western Mediterranean coastal plains to future Relative Sea-Level Rise (RSLR– i.e., sea-level variation due to the combined effect of eustatic sea-level rise and local subsidence) by examining the Holocene coastal response to past sea-level variations. In each investigated coastal plain, we statistically reconstruct the past variability in the sea-level rise rates and analyze the geomorphic response (i.e., retreat, stability, or progradation) of the coastline to these changes. Then, we compare these data with the local RSLR rates expected for the next decades (up to the year 2100), calculated considering sea-level projections under three different climate scenarios (i.e., SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7, SSP5-8.5) and corrected for the local coastal subsidence trends characterizing each coastal plain. This allows us to predict the potential morphodynamic response of each plain to future RSLR by applying a newly developed coastal plain sensitivity index (CPSI), integrating the past and recent coastal trends. Results indicate that only under the SSP2-4.5 scenario, a low probability (< 13%) of natural resilience (intended as shoreline in equilibrium/stable shoreline) is observed. Under all the other scenarios, the investigated coastal plains are destined for an irreversible retreat trend

    Unveiling the role of circular startups in innovation ecosystems: literature review

    Purpose – This study aims to investigate the role of circular startups in driving the transition to a circular economy (CE), particularly within the framework of innovation ecosystems. Despite increasing interest in CE, strategic management still lacks structured guidance on adapting business models, especially in relation to startup dynamics. Design/methodology/approach – The research combines a systematic literature review with bibliometric analysis to explore academic contributions on circular startups (CSUs) and their interactions within innovation ecosystems. This dual approach allows for both quantitative mapping and qualitative interpretation of the literature. Findings – The analysis reveals that CSUs, intrinsically aligned with CE principles, act as key enablers of environmental, technological and social innovation. However, their strategic role within innovation ecosystems remains underexplored in current research. The findings underline the importance of ecosystem-based collaboration in supporting sustainable business model innovation. Originality/value – This research addresses a gap in the literature by systematically examining the intersection of CSUs and innovation ecosystems. It contributes to both CE and strategic management studies by offering an integrated perspective on how emerging ventures can accelerate sustainability transitions through ecosystem collaboration

    Valutazione delle performance nelle reti oncologiche regionali: il modello ValPe.ROC

    La presente ricerca analizza il sistema di valutazione delle performance cliniche ed economiche delle reti oncologiche regionali, concentrandosi sulla Rete Oncologica Campana. In particolare, si è analizzata la V rilevazione (giugno 2022-maggio 2023) del sistema di valutazione “ValPeROC” che adotta l’approccio data-driven per ottimizzare la gestione dei pazienti e il contenimento dei costi. Lo studio mira, attraverso l’osservazione del caso campano, a comprendere in che misura un sistema valutativo contribuisce all’efficientamento di una rete socio-sanitaria. La metodologia quantitativa adottata ha evidenziato come tale strumento sia utile. Attraverso indicatori di performance costruiti ad hoc, si individuano chiaramente le aree di miglioramento e i punti di forza della rete. ValPeROC, quindi, ha un ruolo significativo nel miglioramento delle performance della rete

    Beyond the Bean: Stakeholder Dynamics and Mapping, and Waste Management in the Coffee Supply Chain

    Coffee is undeniably one of the most widely consumed beverages, yet it is generating massive amounts of waste all along the supply chain from production to consumption, which is posing serious environmental and socio-economic problems. The stakeholders of the coffee supply chain remain responsible for resolving this issue and coordinated contributions are crucial to managing effectively this challenge. However, this study sheds lights on fragmented coffee supply chain actors’ relationships which often lead to inefficiencies, resulting in difficulties in waste generation, limited valorization, and weak regulations. Furthermore, the increased consumer demand for high-quality coffee intensifies pressures on the whole supply chain contributing to overproduction and waste accumulation from one perspective and quality degradation and market instability from another perspective. This study provides a strategic mapping of the coffee supply chain, elucidates the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders and provides a framework for coffee supply chain waste management by conducting an in-depth analysis of policy reports, industry publications, and secondary data sources. The findings expose critical gaps in connections, where individual actors engage in isolated sustainability initiatives, but a lack of cohesive collaborative strategies prevents large-scale waste reduction. The study highlights how gaps in regulatory frameworks enable unsustainable practices to persist, slowing progress toward the effective integration of circular economy principles. This research emphasizes the pressing need for stronger stakeholder collaboration, more robust policies, and industry-wide incentives to enhance waste valorization. A significant change can be driven if on one hand, the coordination between producers and consumers is ameliorated and strengthened by clearer regulatory mechanisms and on the other hand, if coffee waste is traced, minimized and repurposed efficiently. These findings provide essential guidance for policymakers, businesses, and researchers working to advance sustainability in the coffee industry and transition toward a more circular, resource-efficient and intelligent supply chain. © 2025, AIDI-Italian Association of Industrial Operations Professors

    A DEM-FEM Coupled Analysis of Ultrasonic Shot Peening Dynamics and Surface Modification Parameters in Aluminum Alloys

    The significant mechanical features of aluminum alloy, including cost-effectiveness, lightweight, durability, high reliability, and easy maintenance, have made it an essential component of the automobile industry. Automobile parts including fuel tanks, cylinder heads, intake manifolds, brake elements, and engine blocks are made of aluminum alloy. The primary causes of its engineering failure are fatigue and fracture. Aluminum alloys' fatigue resistance is frequently increased by surface strengthening methods like ultrasonic shot peening (USP). This article discusses the shot peening dynamics analysis and the influence of ultrasonic shot peening parameters on material surface modification using the DEM-FEM coupling method. Firstly, the projectile motion characteristics under different processes are simulated and analyzed by EDEM. The projectile dynamics characteristics are imported into Ansys software to realize DEM-FEM coupling analysis, and the surface modification characteristics of shot peening materials are obtained. The distribution laws of projectile impact velocity and impact angle are summarized through EDEM simulation of USP with different parameters. At the same time, taking the projectile impact velocity and impact angle as input parameters, combined with ANSYS analysis software, the maximum residual stress and average residual stress of the material under the known peening process conditions are calculated

    Lives, choices, territories: Life Project, Quality of Life, Capabilities and Person-Centred Planning in light of Legislative Decree 62/2024

    n the context of the reform of the Italian system following Legislative Decree 62/2024, the Individual, Personalised and Participatory Life Plan takes on a central regulatory position. This paper aims to offer a theoretical-empirical analysis and an operational interpretation based on the current regulatory and scientific landscape. The objective is twofold: on the one hand, to increase conceptual understanding of the Life Project in relation to models of person-centred planning, supported decision-making and theories of quality of life; on the other hand, to provide a reflection on possible guidelines and recommendations for the design, implementation and evaluation of the Life Project across local contexts, starting from a focus on the regional model of Umbria. Through a systematic review of international literature on effectiveness, challenges and best practices, a reflection was carried out on strengths, organisational critical issues, training needs, outcome indicators and possible research perspectives. The contribution is aimed not only at social, educational and health service providers, researchers and the educational community, but also at policy makers and bodies that determine the implementation guidelines of national legislation

    From Soft Law to Hard Law: Legal Transitions and Sustainable Challenges in the Italian Agri-Food Sector

    The transition from soft to hard law is reshaping global agri-food governance, particularly in relation to sustainability and corporate responsibility. This article analyzes this shift by examining two regulatory approaches: voluntary instruments such as the OECD-FAO Guidance for Responsible Agricultural Supply Chains and binding EU directives like the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and the Corporate Sustain ability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Using a qualitative and interpretive methodology, the study combines a literature review and two case studies (Nicoverde and Lavazza) to explore the evolution from soft law to hard law and the synergies and analyze how these tools are applied in the Italian agri-food sector and how they can contribute to improving corporate sustainability performance. Findings show that soft law has paved the way for more rigorous regulation, but the increasing compliance burden poses challenges, es pecially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These cases serve as virtuous examples to illustrate how soft and hard law interact in practice, offering concrete insights into the translation of general sustainability principles into corporate strategies.
