Fiber Optic Probes Exploiting Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance for Chemical Detection
No full textA facile fiber optic transducer relying on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomena is reported. It involves a single-ended probe made of an uncladded multimode fiber optics deposited with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The reflected spectrum of the device is regulated by the absorption spectral features of the AuNPs, showcasing attenuation bands in visible range. The position of these attenuation bands can be correlated with the external medium refractive index and eventually the presence of bio-chemical compounds attached to the AuNPs. To evaluate the performance of the device, it was tested towards the detection of pesticide Thiram at low concentrations

Cultural heritage participation in Italy: the role of human and social capital.
No full textPurpose - This paper examines the relationship between human and social capital and participation and frequency of visits to museums, archaeological sites and monuments, controlling for any possible demographic and socio-economic characteristics. It reviews the literature on the determinants of heritage participation to highlight the importance of educational attainment and the lack of work on social relations.
Design/methodology/approach - It uses the microdata of the “Multipurpose Survey on Households - Aspects of Daily Life”, available from the Italian Statistical Office for the years 2015-2020, to estimate ordered probit and zero-inflated ordered probit models.
Findings – The results show that Italians’ participation in cultural heritage activities and the frequency of such participation are primarily related to education level, followed by social interaction variables. However, when we interplay education level and social relations variables, the findings show that people with a high school qualification (diploma) who meet friends several times a week and are satisfied with relationships with friends display negative correlations with participation and frequency in cultural heritage activities. Other important determinants of the participation and frequency of cultural heritage activities are gender, student status, foreign citizenship and higher occupations.
Originality/value - To our knowledge, this is the first paper that studies the role of human and social capital in heritage cultural participation in Italy as well as the first study in literature on cultural participation that analyses the interplay between human capital and social relations

È l’occasione per il comparatista di effettuare una disamina delle soluzioni adottate dagli ordinamenti più significativi di common e di civil law per meglio perimetrare la strada da percorrere al fine di superare concretamente e definitivamente la vieta equiparazione animale-cosa.The Italian constitutional reform of art. 9 of 2022, the bills of new laws in the civil field, the increase in criminal sanctions in the case of mistreatment and abandonment of animals, reaffirmed by the renewed text of the Highway Code, are all indicators of an increasingly favorable climate towards our animal friends. It is an opportunity for the comparatist to carry out an examination of the solutions adopted by the most significant common and civil law systems to better outline the path to follow in order to concretely and definitively overcome the prohibition of “animal-thing” equation

Increasing the Cybersecurity of Smart Grids by Prosumer Monitoring
No full textThe evolution from traditional power grids to modern smart grids marks a significant advancement in energy management and efficiency. This transition - driven by the implementation of bidirectional energy and information flows - results in a dramatic increase in infrastructure vulnerability since new entry points are introduced on the attack surface. In particular, prosumers represent a brand new - and, thus, largely unexplored - attack vector, for which a thorough re-evaluation of the existing security measures is very much needed. This article proposes a novel approach to security monitoring, which exploits business process knowledge to effectively identify and mitigate prosumer-specific advanced persistent threats in smart grids. To validate the approach, an experimental campaign is done in a real setup, specifically the power grid of the Berchidda municipality, in Italy. Impact evaluation covers technical as well as business aspects since the analysis includes potential economic consequences of the attacks
