    Improving sustainability and energy efficiency in buildings: A road to zero-emission buildings in Italy

    An increase in energy consumption both in residential and commercial buildings has been registered for the past couple of decades. In the context of this crisis, a strategic plan has been developed by the European Union involving the environmental sustainability of buildings. This study provides an overview of the implementation strategy of the Italian building strategy and draws attention to promoting sustainable design in building architecture and the energy-efficient built environment. This research presents the results and analysis of the solar energy integration in the urban and rural building environments in Italy, in the form of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) systems, Photovoltaic Shading Devices (PVSDs) integrated with Phase Change Materials (PCM). Moreover, this research also evaluates the zero-emission building framework for building. The variability of different climatic conditions in Italy is also kept in mind. The experimental simulations have been done using Energy Plus software, which has demonstrated the building envelopes of the building and energy saving for different cases

    Functional effect of adiponectin and body composition assessment in lung cancer subjects after video‐assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy

    Background: Lung cancer is a pathology with an important incidence. It is a multifactorial disease characterized by epigenetic and nutritional factors. Indeed, there is a strong association between adipose tissue and the pulmonary system, and low-grade inflammation of obese and/or overweight subjects have a pivotal role in lung cancer establishment. Methods: In this study, we analyzed body composition through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and biochemical parameters such as glycemic and lipidic profile, inflammation profile and adiponectin serum levels in 30 patients (19 male; 11 women) undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy for lung cancer from September 2021 to May 2022 at the Thoracic Unit of Luigi Vanvitelli University of Naples. A control group were also recruited (15 male; 15 female) consisting of age and sex matched volunteered subjects at the Thoracic Unit of Luigi Vanvitelli University of Naples. The control group and lung cancer patients were monitored for anthropometric and biochemical parameters before VATS lobectomy. Furthermore, the lung cancer patients were also monitored after 6 months of surgery. Results: Body composition is modified after surgery and also albumin and C-reactive protein (CRP) serum levels. In the overweight patients in our study, adiponectin levels were found to be reduced compared with the control group and increased in the same patients after VATS lobectomy. Conclusions: Tumor removal as well as weight loss could affect adiponectin levels, and thus also a reduction in inflammation. In addition, weight loss could also be due to a psychological condition given by the intervention and not to malnutrition related to therapy

    Determinants of Blockchain Adoption in Accounting: A Case Study Analysis

    The research investigates the factors influencing the company’s decision to adopt the blockchain technology in accounting. To achieve this aim, the re-search applies the Technology-Organisation-Environment model and adopts a qualitative case study methodology, focusing on the case study of a leading provider of innovative solutions for document management and collaboration. The results reveal that the blockchain solution improves the company’s overall information system, by increasing the reliability and transparency of accounting records, the traceability of transactions, and reducing cost and human errors. In addition, the findings of the research reveal that technological aspects predomi-nate on both the organization and environment dimensions. The paper contrib-utes to literature on blockchain by providing an empirical investigation of the factors influencing the decision to adopt blockchain technology according to a blockchain provider perspective. In addition, the research contributes to previ-ous studies by investigating the blockchain adoption in the aviation industry. From a practical perspective, the research provides suggestions to companies that want to adopt blockchain by revealing the antecedents of the implementa-tion, especially with reference to the supply chain

    ESG performance and the cost of debt. Evidence from the corporate bond market

    We study the impact of ESG performance on the cost of debt in the primary corporate bond market. Using an international sample of 25,234 bonds from 2677 ESG-rated issuers, we analyse yield spreads between bonds from high- and low-ESG-rated issuers, finding lower yields (by about 10 bps) for high-ESG firms. Our results are robust to additional tests, including controls for endogeneity, and are mainly explained by the environmental and social pillars. We also find that this result is driven by more developed financial markets, likely affected by lower information frictions, and by countries where bankruptcy rules guarantee higher protection for bondholders, making them more willing to grant ESG premia. Finally, we observe lower yield spreads for bond issues that occurred after the introduction of the SFDR, highlighting the importance of regulations promoting socially responsible investments. Overall, our results suggest that firms can benefit from superior ESG performance in the form of lower borrowing costs in the corporate bond market

    Studies of hadronic showers in SND@LHC

    The SND@LHC experiment was built for observing neutrinos arising from LHC pp collisions. The detector consists of two sections: a target instrumented with SciFi modules and a hadronic calorimeter/muon detector. Energetic νN collisions in the target produce hadronic showers. Reconstruction of the shower total energy requires an estimate of the fractions deposited in both the target and the calorimeter. In order to calibrate the SND@LHC response, a replica of the detector was exposed to hadron beams with 100 to 300 GeV in the CERN SPS H8 test beam line in Summer 2023. This report describes the methods developed to tag the presence of a shower, to locate the shower origin in the target, and to combine the target SciFi and the calorimeter signals so to measure the shower total energy

    Decolonizing the Language of Displayed Art: Kara Walker's Fons Americanus

    Starting with a reflection on the role of public sculpture as a catalyst of political debate, this chapter explores the possibility of decolonizing knowledge both within Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) and through the work of Kara Walker, with a focus on her monumental installation Fons Americanus (UK, 2019). While MCDA has advanced a strong critique of logocentrism, it remains imbricated in a critical perspective that, apart from a few interventions, is still predominantly dominated by the visual. Therefore, this chapter explores ways of decolonizing this bias through a focus on the senses and on materiality capable of displacing the logocentrism and ocularcentrism of the Western tradition. Similarly, Walker’s installation not only highlights the contemporary legacies of Western colonialism in the form of racism and intellectual and material colonization but enables the emergence of alternative and marginalized narratives through a decolonial process – encapsulated in the concept of ‘critical fabulation’ – that makes the artist an ‘unreliable narrator’ (in her own words). This process is the result of a decolonial pedagogy that draws on the Black feminist tradition to shed light on the political imbrication of history, race, and gender in contemporary forms of ongoing colonialism as a way of opening up the way to a multiversal and global-centric perspective

    Le recenti novità legislative non hanno offerto un significativo contributo al dibattito sul tesseramento sportivo, in merito al quale si registrano orientamenti dottrinali disomogenei e una scarsa attenzione della giurisprudenza ai profili strutturali e funzionali dell’atto. Il tema intercetta diverse e collaterali questioni, i cui tentativi di definizione riflettono, tuttora, le incertezze sistematiche relative all’inquadramento del fenomeno giuridico sportivo nell’unitarietà dell’ordinamento generalmente considerato. L’autrice condivide la tesi del rilievo negoziale dell’atto, reputando non dirimente ai fini dell’analisi la querelle sulla valenza pubblicistica dei compiti federali, una volta acquisito che, secondo il nostro ordinamento, il modulo privatistico è permeabile ormai alla gestione di interessi non meramente egoistici, ma super-individuali e generali. Alla luce del valore costituzionale della personalità umana, l’adesione agli enti sportivi, di cui il tesseramento è evidente espressione, viene inquadrata, piuttosto, nel contesto della natura necessariamente spontanea e associativa del fenomeno sportivo, in quanto tale diverso da altre organizzazioni pur similmente articolate, ma istituite per legge statale, come quella del Servizio Sanitario Nazionale. Dopo aver indagato il complesso meccanismo dell’ingresso nei sodalizi sportivi, secondo lo schema delle associazioni del libro primo del codice civile, di gran lunga il più diffuso nello sport, sottolineandone, altresì, le ampie prerogative in termini di autonomia negoziale, la ricerca giunge, così, a far luce sul diverso atteggiarsi dei rapporti contrattuali dello sportivo (atleta o altra persona tesserata) con il sodalizio di base, nella prassi. Soluzione più fedele al dettato costituzionale viene considerata, in ogni caso, quella che riconduce il procedimento negoziale, in cui si inserisce la c.d. richiesta di tesseramento, a un contratto associativo concluso con l’affiliato

    Development and characterization of graphene nanoplatelet-based strain sensors for structural health monitoring

    Nanocomposites based on graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were developed using SX10 EVO epoxy resin matrix. Electrical conductivity measurements showed significant improvement with increasing GNP content, reaching a maximum value at the saturation of the electrical network. The electrical behavior and performance of the fabricated nanocomposite sheets as strain sensors were investigated. Sensors with graphene content near the percolation threshold exhibited the highest gauge factor due to the tunneling effect, making them more sensitive to strain. However, further increasing the GNP content enhanced electrical conductivity while reducing sensitivity. The sensors demonstrated good stability and reversibility. The highest gauge factor (GF) was observed in 5 wt % GNP content, with a value near 20. Finally, the response of the sensors under cyclic tests was assessed, demonstrating the high robustness of the proposed sensors for aerospace applications
